[SOLVED] Re: 64 bit install alongside win7 to diff HDD, and no grub?

Thanks for all the feedback, but I think that I am simply going to go the dumb, simple and easy way, and shrink the windows partition to make room for Linux on the main drive. That win7 partition is just over 200 GB in size, and so there is plenty of room. I'll try leave the swap on the IDE drive, s...

Re: 64 bit install alongside win7 to diff HDD, and no grub?

Of course, it seems the obvious "solution" is to shrink the windows partition on the SATA drive, put Linux on that physical drive, and move all the user data to the IDE drive. *sigh* I had hoped that I could simply overwrite the MBR on the SATA drive to point at the Linux drive. Is this possible (be...

Re: 64 bit install alongside win7 to diff HDD, and no grub?

Got into the BIOS. UEFI boot is disabled. The second drive is on an IDE controller add-in board, the first drive is a SATA drive. UEFI enable fails to boot at all (it goes looking for a network boot via DHCP), so I turned UEFI off again. The BIOS shows both drives, but does not allow them to selecte...

[SOLVED] 64 bit install alongside win7 to diff HDD, and no grub?

I have 2 physical hard disks, with win7 on one disk and the other intended for Linux. I installed initially the 32 bit, and then the 64 bit mint 18 to the second one (read that UEFI boot requires the 64 bit to get Grub to work). BUT - when I restarted the machine, it booted directly to windows - no ...

Re: external USB backup drive randomly will not show

Thank you for confirming that I am not hallucinating. Is there any way to "poke" the usb subsystem to get it to wake up to the fact that a usb drive has been added to the system?

external USB backup drive randomly will not show

Good morning I have an external USB backup drive that is usually powered down save for when I want to run backup software. Mostly it's fine, i.e. when I power it up, it shows up on my desktop within a minute. But sometimes it doesn't, no matter how often I cycle the drive's power. It WILL show up if...

Re: Security notice: Meltdown and Spectre

Tried the kernal update via UKCC, and on bootup got a set of error messages that went by too fast to see, then got my Mate desktop, but my second monitor was gone, and the kernal could not identify my main monitor as anything other than unknown. So I rebooted into 4.10, and all works well again. Som...

Re: How do I create a URL desktop link?

The red circle part, drag and drop it to your primary desktop. It doesn't work on the secondary desktop(monitor) for some reason. It works with Chrome too. *sigh* - In my case, somehow my primary and secondary monitors are switched from FF's POV for this act only. I can drag to the secondary, but n...

Re: Thunderbird 45.8.0 hangs on new Gmail password window<SOLVED>

A version of the same bug, this time with TB 52.2.1 (64-bit), Lightning v. 5.4 under linux mint 64 bit- there is no google provider that is compatible in the Mozilla add-ons system. As soon as I try to add any of the xpi versions of the provider, TB hangs, and keeps kicking out script hang error win...

And - the popup is populated with all my games, not just the linux ones. Still, an improvement.

Re: steam popup menu blank and skinny?

Well, steam updated itself, and now the popup works, but nothing else in the main windows does - I can only see my library, but cannot select the store, or anything else on the top bar. *sigh*

Nope - no such results in MATE. Cinnamon is apparently more fine grained. *sigh*

Where is this setting? I'm running the MATE desktop, btw, if that matters.

steam popup menu blank and skinny?

I got the wierdest graphics bug with Steam which doesn't happen on the win7 side (dual boot) - see picture attached. The popup should be populated with games and links, but it isn't. The Steam support is very unhelpful i.e. that's not our problem 'cause it's not ubuntu. The graphics card is an nvidi...

Steam popup from bar

Under Mate, when I run steam, I get an icon on the bar next to the Ethernet icon, as expected. But. whne I right cvlick on it, i get a popup (as expected), but it is not only blank, it is skinny. On the Win7 dual boot side, the popup has a bunch of menu entries, including games to play. steam rtclk....

dual boot time shift by 4 hours

I have a fascinating strangeness. When single boot with win7, the date/time was always correct. Since installing mint in a dual boot under grub, the linux side also always keeps correct time through power-off reboots, etc. But after running linux, if I then reboot onto the windows side, somehow, win...

Now you have confused me - are you talking about the windows machine firewall or my linux machine's firewall?
