Dual Booting Mint 18 on a Lenovo H50 running Win 10

I want to install the latest version of Mint (Mint 18, Cinnamon) on my Lenovo H50-50. Reading this forum, there seems to be a problem with setting up a dual boot system with Windows 10. Can anyone explain how to do it successfully? Obviously, I'll back up my Windows installation before starting but ...

Re: If your scanner doesn't work

Have you guys tried Vuescan? Yes, its commercial software but it works on a lot of different scanners in linux as well as windows. I've used it with my old HP 5370 and Mint 8 (yes, I'm not up to date!). Here is a list of compatible scanners: http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm#supported I'm n...

Re: Mint 10 and WPA2

Well, that link does look familiar since I started it way back when. The procedures actually used didn't include compiling the newer driver but did work just fine for Mint 8. If I install Mint 10, I guess I'll have to give it a try. I was just hoping it wouldn't be necessary since 10 sees my adapter...

Mint 10 and WPA2

Is there a problem with Mint 10 and the WPA2 security protocol? I've tried the Mint 10 live disc and for the first time ever, a live disc will recognize my wireless adapter (AZiO AWU101N USB 2.0) and will show me all wireless access points in range of my computer. If an access point is unprotected, ...

Re: Linux Mint 10 and wireless

Interesting. I just ran the install disk for Mint 10 in live mode and it recognized my wireless adapter all by itself. I was even able to connect with the internet by using an unsecured wireless access somewhere in the neighborhood. What it DOESN'T seem to want to do is access my own router even whe...

Re: Still can't install Linux Mint 8 x64

This is just a blind guess, but have you tried removing the Tesla card and then doing the install? I looked it up to see what it does and I wonder if any version of linux has been tested with it. It probably isn't the cause of your install problem but it would be fairly easy to test.

Re: Problem installing Vuescan

I rechecked it on my PC and realized that it opens with Wine. So you need to install Wine.No problem Why are you making things so incredibly complicated? * download the .tgz * extract it * run the vuescan executable * bingo Definitely no Wine needed (just did it myself). Like Mick said, when I did ...

What was your clue that Vuescan needed wine? There is no mention of it on their website.

Re: Problem installing Vuescan

OK, that did it. I wouldn't have thought about installing wine. You're right, it would be nice if they gave you some indication that installing wine was a necesssity. Anyway, thanks a million. Your help is what make these forums so helpful.

Re: Problem installing Vuescan

You don't need to do any of that technical stuff. That is only needed if you are compiling from source. The program you downloaded is ready to go after it is unpacked. So follow these simple steps and you will be up and running in minutes. I will assume then that the file vuesca85.tgz is on your de...

to extract tar files For tar.bz2 tar jxvf filename.tar.bz2 For tar.gz tar zxvf filename.tar.gz Do .tgz files extract with the same commands as a .gz file? I tried a variation on this, using tar xjf filename.tgz. Maybe I mis-spelled something. I'll try it again tonight. Does the rest of the install ...

Problem installing Vuescan (SOLVED!)

I'm trying to install Vuescan in Mint 8 (Helena). I've downloaded the proper install file, vuesca85.tgz (the version for ubuntu based distros) and I've followed the instructions in this thread: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=22521&start=0&hilit=Vuescan When I get to the...

Re: If your scanner doesn't work

If the built in scanner utility doesn't work please try Xsane - you can install it from the software manager And if that doesn't work, try Vuescan. Its a commercial application that has a linux version that I have used before and it worked quite well with my old HP 5370c. I haven't tried it yet on ...

I finally got online last night and installed StartupManager. This is a nice app. I'm glad to see something like this available. In fact, I wish they would include it in the default install. Thanks for posting about it.

Re: Wait for 64 bit Linux Mint 8?

What do you know? Everything worked great out of the box. I'm glad to be using Linux Mint as my primary OS at home again. Handbrake is BLAZING fast on my new pc using the 64 bit version. It takes me 45 minutes for encoding when it used to take 4-5 hours on my P4 running 32 bit Mint 7! Not to change...

SOLVED! Wifi problem with Azio AWU101N

I've got a new computer with a new wifi adapter, an Azio AWU101N. This uses the Ralink RT3070 chipset. While it is an excellent wifi adapter for Windows (much better than my former Linksys adapter in my opinion), I can't seem to get it to work in Mint 8. While there are Ralink drivers available from...

Which is preferred, ATI or Nvidia graphics cards

I realize this is subject to personal opinion, but does one type of video chip work better with linux (specifically, Mint 6) than the other? I'm buying a new pc in a couple of months and if one type of video card is better supported than the other, that would be good to know.
