Re: Can't Upgrade to Tara

EmaRsk, we don't correct other people's spelling here unless it makes things unclear (spelling errors in names of packages and such). After all, this is an international forum, and for many of us, that means that we're using a foreign language, like I'm doing now. It's hard enough as it is, even wi...

Re: Can't Upgrade to Tara

Its possible , but its not automatic. Due to some major changes between the two. I have done it both ways. I think its honestly easier jsut to install and keep your existing home directory so you don't loose your data and then reinstall your applications. I suggest making a backup of your home befor...

Re: Brand new to linux, comp won't recognize wifi

seems more prudent to replace wifi card, IF it works as replacing the motherboard(etc) would be more costly than a wifi. In fact i may still be able to return the wifi card. Is there a way to tell which other network adapters work out of the box with linux? I definitely appreciate everyone's help h...

Re: Looking for guidance replacing MS Vista 64-bit with the newest Mint Cinnamon

Thanks for the encouraging words. In my case, the situation is a little more complicated. My PC has two separate hard drives- originally came with Microsoft Vista and several years ago I added a second HD with the Windows 7 OS. Since we abandoned Vista at that time, I wanted to discard it and repla...

Re: Looking for guidance replacing MS Vista 64-bit with the newest Mint Cinnamon

This is what I plan to do: Install the new hard drive in place of the old Vista drive. Connect the flash drive to the PC. Boot up the PC. I expect to see the initial black screen asking me to choose which OS I want- Windows 7 or "unknown" (the new drive) I'll select the new drive and I'm expecting ...

Re: possibly awkward newbie question about support for Linux

I provide the services you describe locally to people in actually a pretty small county. Were out their, I would check on craigslist for your area if any of them mention servicing Linux. As all my adds have Linux listed as one of the operating systems supported. Yes, I do get work from it and actual...

Re: Linux boots into terminal ????? Help please

well image you posted of the xserver error I am wondering if your user permission got goofed up?

Try sudo startx, but if it loads up your not going to want to use it like that. This just rules out a few things.

Re: random freeze of OS

If it freezes again don't do a hard reset. Press and hold down the "ALT + SYSRQ" and type "R E I S U B" That will do a proper reboot. See https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1701896.html Well, I thought I solved the problem, buit the computer froze again on me today. I tried the process yo...

Ryzen 2000 kernel support

So I got on order a 2600x Processor. I was wondering if the kernel 4.15 is enough or are their reasons to install a newer version of the kernel. (example 4.15 does not fully support the processor.) I figure some other people have probably already messed with this so figured I would ask. I know the 1...

Re: A fresh install with Raid

Are you trying to install Mint on a RAID volume? If so, then you're likely going to want to get some type of hardware/pseudo-hardware RAID - - either via BIOS or an add-on card. MDADM is a software RAID, and the RAID is not actually assembled until partway through the boot sequence. The default beh...

Re: WiFi upload speeds are consistently slow

I would certainly cancel and switch to a cellular solution. I switched from Hughesnet sat to 4G cellular over 4 years ago that ain't going to work, chatting with Verizon right now Jesse: John, huge data allotment towards your jetpack, it would definitely cost a lot. Though we have unlimited data, w...
