Re: Move /home from LUKS-encrypted drive to a larger drive

I took the plunge yesterday, changing UUIDs in /etc/crypttab and swapping out the hard drives on bare metal. Not sure how Linux handles drive descriptions (which drive becomes /sda, /sdb, etc), but I plugged the new drive right into the old drive's SATA port just to make sure. Everything worked fine...

Re: Move /home from LUKS-encrypted drive to a larger drive

To have more confidence in your process, I suggest trying it out in a virtual machine. It's going to be a bit long but I think it's worth it. You dont need to have several virtual drives for the virtual machine, just make different LUKS containers on a single drive. Boy... I could've thought of thi...

Re: Move /home from LUKS-encrypted drive to a larger drive

Good point. How do I get around that? Leave everything set to /dev/sdb and just change the uuid in /etc/crypttab?

[SOLVED] Move /home from LUKS-encrypted drive to a larger drive

My /home folder is getting too large for the drive it's currently on, so I need to put in a larger drive and move it there. Since my setup is a little more complex than the default Mint install, I'd appreciate it if some of the more experienced users could give me a sanity check on what I'm planning...

Re: HP LaserJet 1020 as a network printer on a Fritz!Box

I have a long term hate of the 1xxx series HP's due to all of the issues I have seen hundreds of them have.
You've recruited one new member to the hate club. ;)

Many thanks for your detailed info on printers and their handling of print jobs. I think I've got an idea what to steer clear of now.

Re: HP LaserJet 1020 as a network printer on a Fritz!Box

Hi there! I don't know a lot about printers, so thanks a lot for bringing up this issue of whether a printer is "host based" or not. Could you tell me how I can find out whether a printer has its own interpreter / processor on board? What kind of description am I looking for in the manufac...

Re: HP LaserJet 1020 as a network printer on a Fritz!Box

Hey there, thanks for trying to help, but nope, that's not a typo. As you can see from the link, "USB remote connection" requires additional (Windoze-based) software on your machine. Also it isn't necessary. The "normal" USB connection (i.e. non-"USB remote") of ...

HP LaserJet 1020 as a network printer on a Fritz!Box

I've inherited an old HP LaserJet 1020 and I'm trying to get it to run as a network printer connected to a Fritz!Box via USB. Here's what I've done and/or found out so far: I have HPLIP v 3.20.3 installed, which satisfies the printer's minimum version needs. However, it also requires one of HP's sil...

How do I donate wallpapers to Mint?

Hey there, how do I donate wallpapers to Mint? I'm sure this question gets asked a lot, but I've only found an age-old forum thread with dead links and probably outdated practices. I'm both a Mint/FLOSS enthusiast as well as a hobby photographer, and I feel the latter has matured enough to contribut...

Re: Dual Boot - Help! I need to remove the HDD containing LM.

I doubt that the Win7 boot loader has changed much, so I'd try using that old 2013 disk.
Note that it is also possible to create a USB rescue stick; if all your disks fail you, I'd try that. There are good reasons why we've moved away from optical media in the last decade, after all. ;)

Re: Dual Boot - Help! I need to remove the HDD containing LM.

Do you hear the DVD drive starting up to read the DVD? Yes - BIOS changes were successful, but the DVD may be broken. No - BIOS changes were unsuccessful / You may have a broken DVD drive / You may accidentally have removed the power or SATA cables of the drive while removing your hard disk. That's ...

Re: Dual Boot - Help! I need to remove the HDD containing LM.

You're welcome! :)
As always, if you have any non-system files on either of the hard drives, a backup through Mint or a live boot medium is advised before doing any of the above.

Re: Dual Boot - Help! I need to remove the HDD containing LM.

I think the simplest and least-confusing thing to do, might be to remove LM and restore my PC to its original (single-boot Windows 7) configuration (if this is easy to do). Then, when I have installed the new HDD, and relocated all my programs and data on the new sdb, and sdc suitably, I can reinst...

Re: Desktop background is so bright

I'm not sure if I understand your problem. "Desktop background" = your wallpaper, which is easy to change. If you're referring to the theme - you can change that to a dark theme under "Themes". If you're referring to monitor brightness: There are several tools to change that, e.g...

Re: [SOLVED] System freezes after suspend (to RAM)

OP here. I've installed Mint 20 on my machine in the meantime. No issues whatsoever, not even a need to apply the fix. If you're experiencing issues with LM 20, note that there is no way to revert back to kernel 4.15 in LM 20, as the Ubuntu 20.04 basis ships with kernel 5.4 by default and does not a...

Re: (Solved) Epson Scanner not usable since update to Mint 19 - Pipe error

Sorry for digging up old corpses, but this seems to be a popular thread among people trying to get their Epson scanners to work. So I'm back in 2020 with two updates: Fix still works in Mint 20 I've recently installed Mint 20 (fresh install) x64 Cinnamon and was curious whether the scanner would sti...

Re: Installer fails: 'grub-install /dev/sda failed'

there will be a list of boot options, with the USB drive listed twice. Often one has a description and the other does not. If one says UEFI, the other is legacy boot; or vice versa. Of course! I had completely forgotten that I need to set the USB stick to boot into legacy mode in the BIOS! It was s...

Re: Installer fails: 'grub-install /dev/sda failed'

Hi there, thanks for your reply! Your assumption is correct: I used to install in non-UEFI mode (MBR), but now I cannot seem to get Mint to live-boot into MBR mode. The BIOS is set to boot in legacy mode. Here are my specs and partition details: inxi -Fxz System: Kernel: 5.4.0-26-generic x86_64 bits...

[SOLVED] Installer fails: 'grub-install /dev/sda failed'

I'm trying to do a fresh install of LM 20, but it keeps failing with the error: 'grub-install /dev/sda failed'. I'm pretty sure it's because I've zero experience with EFI installs. I'd love to install without an EFI partition, but Mint won't let me. Can someone help me figure out either a) how to ru...

Weirdly enough, the problem seems to have resolved itself. Changes now remain permanent. I'll mark this as SOLVED, although the solution isn't quite clear. :D
