Re: Libreoffice version

Hi Pjotr, thanks for this hint! Spontaneous, I did it: I installed the PPA with the new version of LibreOffice. Anything worked fine. I got LibreOffice 6.4.3.2. But nevertheless, I got the ever same old useless solver I had in the LibreOffice version LM had installed from the LM packages. Neither in...

Re: Libreoffice version

Hi, I'm happy to read that there will be a new version of Linux Mint soon, because in my view the LM-Team is too conservative updating an important tool like LibreOffice. Perhaps I'm a special case. Maybe. I'm a heavy user of spreadsheets, and actually I use the solver intensly. The current solver i...

Hi zcot,

okay, that makes sense and I'm getting an idea of what happened. Thank you, and happy Easter!

Re: [SOLVED] no matching swap device is available

To be honest: I don't really know what I have done. No Idea what the "resume" thing does.
I don't mind. The main thing is: It seems to work.

Re: no matching swap device is available

Hi pbear, what I'm doing wrong? Don't know. That is exactly my problem. That's the reason why I posted in this forum. I don't fiddle around with the system, usually. I simply use it. I used to rate system encryption as part of the system: I trusted in the LM team and used system encryption like all ...

Re: no matching swap device is available

Hi zcot, thanks! But I'm sorry, that does not work. It drives me into a game LM starts to play with me. In fstab, I commented out the line starting with "/swapfile", as you had recommended. What about a second file, which mentions /swapfile? In /etc/crypttab I find: "cryptswap1 /swapf...

Re: What to do if you can't login to Linux Mint 18.x

Hi, thank you for your help - not the timeshift one, the other one brought me back to my PC. Your might be interested to know, that I had nothing done with virtualbox. I don't use it. The last actions before shutdown yesterday evening were related to valgrind. I had installed valgrind with "apt...

Re: Kernel-Updates - yes or no?

I think my question has been answered, thanks to all who commented. I will set this thread solved. My decision: I will follow the development of the kernel. If that one day might stop one of my computers to work, I can roll back to a previous kernel (and to the backup of my data, if necessary) - or ...

Re: Kernel-Updates - yes or no?

Under ordinary circumstances, it's usually an acceptable risk not to update your kernel. But the current Meltdown/Spectre crisis is an exception: everybody should install a kernel with (some) protection against this. Currently, these can only be found in the 4.4 and the 4.13 kernel series. That's i...

Kernel-Updates - yes or no? [solved]

Hi everybody, my question is not a new one, but I don't have an answer which helps in daily practical use of Linux Mint. The question is simply: Should I install kernel updates or not? I have been using Linux Mint throughout the 17's and 18's versions. I have installed every update I got all this ti...

Re: 17.3 restarts instead of shutting down

Hi hansdulac and deepakdeshp,

thank you for your hints. Seems I dropped onto a "feature" of Lenovo-notebooks. I will switch to your ways of shutting down. It is even faster.

regards

17.3 restarts instead of shutting down

Hi, on my Lenovo-Notebook Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 shows the annoying feature of rebooting when I click the menu button to shut down. When I shut down again immediately after the reboot, the shut down ist executed normally. I suspect this behaviour might be related to the fact that I recently re-ins...
