Re: Swap partition being used without a reason?
There is a system setting called "swappiness" that determines the likelihood / probability of using swap. By default it has a high value of 60%. You can lower the value if you like: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/swappiness.html Sorry! I should have been clearer. My question ...

Re: Brave browser newer than version 1.61.120 does not render
I’ve been wondering how it can be that there aren’t any urgent discussions on Brave’s own forum, nor on Reddit. Maybe it’s a very selective bug? :? I don’t use any proprietary divers and I’m on LM 21.2, but when I updated Brave from 1.61.101 to 1.63.162 (I don’t install every available update), I wa...

Swap partition being used without a reason?
I’ve been using LM with MATE since version 17.3, always with a swap partition equal to the size of the RAM. (Just because I was hoping to use hibernation; never got it to work.) All these years, I had never seen the swap partition being used at all. And then, within a week, I discovered it being use...

Re: Same drive for both Timeshift and data backups? Also seeking pointers...
Can anyone offer suggestions on what directories or files i may want to backup with Timeshift other than the defaults? You’ve already answered that question yourself, haven’t you? At least, that’s how I interpreted this statement: " I'll be able to more or less simply 'roll back' [...] ...

Re: Can’t (re-)install languages, not even English
For the record: The issue was solved in an indirect manner. I had been planning to try the “reinstall” option on all the language-pack-... packages at the next opportunity, which was going to be after my monthly backup. However, after that backup, my next usual task was to apply any pending system u...

[Solved] Can’t (re-)install languages, not even English
I wonder if it’s the in-place upgrade from LM 20.3 to 21.2 (via 21.1) that messed things up. I had never had any such problem with language settings before, but I had always (i.e. up to and including 20.3) done fresh installs from scratch and added the one other language I need. Now, when I go into ...

Re: How to install some GUI application for one account only ?
So you’re confirming that you haven’t been using Flatpak for your browsers, right? (I’m not sure how to read your exchange with Midnight True and I’ve never used Flatpak myself, so I have to make sure that we’re not talking about Flatpak.) If so, then it appears to me that you’ve misunderstood a cou...

Re: Hundreds of gigabytes written by Cinnamon, mintUpdate, and Firefox video caching. SSD weardown.
does that hold for a Reboot? Yes, it does. (No startup script is needed.) In fact, it takes effect only after your next reboot. That’s why, according to the source of this info (item #9 in Pjotr’s article titled Speed Up your Mint! ), you should use this command to check that your /tmp is indeed mo...

Re: Hundreds of gigabytes written by Cinnamon, mintUpdate, and Firefox video caching. SSD weardown.
The high writes by Firefox are mainly due to video caching, because there is no way to turn this useless feature off. There may not be a way to entirely turn off cache usage, but if you have enough RAM (and it doesn’t necessarily take much) you may be able to squarely redirect your browser’s cachin...

Where does mate-default-applications-properties keep its info?
I don’t see anything relevant in dconf. Now that I’ve uninstalled Thunderbird, I want to make Betterbird the default e-mail app. (In fact, I partly expected that to happen automatically.) But the field for the default e-mail app is now empty and greyed. I thought it might be based on the MimeType fi...

Re: [Solved] Is it possible to remove, replace or override a dependency? (Birdtray needs Thunderbird but shouldn't.)
Did you use it before this incident, and it indicated unread emails? Might've been a previous version? Yes, I was using it before on my main system, but it was the later version, i.e. the one on their PPA: 1.10. It worked fine with TB 102 as well as Betterbird 115. But 1.09 also worked with TB 102 ...

Re: Is it possible to remove, replace or override a dependency?
Download the deb source for birdtray, edit it, rebuild, and you can install it by itself, without the funky dependency. Thanks! 8) That worked. At least... it worked as intended. I didn’t find the procedure particularly simple, which is what I had hoped for, but I did it on a test machine and every...

Re: Is it possible to remove, replace or override a dependency?
You COULD change the dependency on the .deb package to where you could install it while thunderbird is not installed. But it actually would require something from the thunderbird package so by doing that you would actually break it. I doubt that, since Birdtray’s “Preferences” GUI includes a field ...

Re: Is it possible to remove, replace or override a dependency?
Does not betterbird come with its own tray icon implementation? As I mentioned in my post, it's not as useful. Since I've been using it for years, I'm used to having the Birdtray icon blink (and the blinking speed can even be adjusted) not only when there is an unread message, but also if I simply ...

[Solved] Is it possible to remove, replace or override a dependency? (Birdtray needs Thunderbird but shouldn't.)
I am now using Betterbird 115 instead of Thunderbird and I want to get rid of Thunderbird. apt won’t let me uninstall thunderbird without uninstalling birdtray , because the latter has “thunderbird” as a dependency. And if I let it uninstall birdtray , I won’t be able to re-install it because thunde...

What happened to the "Views" counters on 18 October? They suddenly jumped up by a large amount.
My own post of 11 October in the MATE forum had reached 40 views by the morning of 18 October, but 8 hours later it showed 229 and now (16 hours after that) shows 283. Not impossible, I guess, but not plausible either, given the rate at which it had been increasing over the first seven days. More im...

Weird interference with the LM main menu button when mate-terminal is maximized
I never had this problem up to and including LM 19.3. It started on my main system after the fresh install of 20.3 and it persists after the in-place updates to 21 and 21.2. (Version 1.26.0 of mate-terminal and version 6.1.7 of mintmenu.) The scenario is thus: I’m using mate-terminal in a maximized ...

Re: copying in the background even though I finished
You DO realize that the format of an external drive has nothing whatsoever to do with the default disk format used by the Mint installer (or anypne else's), don't you? Yes. The OP’s text did not mention “external” even once and I simply had not noticed that his screenshot indicates “WD”, which I re...
