Re: Linux laptop

I'm running Mint 19.3 on an Acer Aspire 314 I bought at T.S. Bohemia in the CZ. I've never had a problem with it (except that my copy lacks the RAM expansion port in the back; I do have a plug for an extra hard drive though...). It ran Win 10 when I bought it, but I deleted that immediately since I ...

DCC loconet interfaces and Linux Mint compatibility

Hi, I'm not sure which category to post this in so I try here. I want to connect my model railway to JMRI or Rocrail, but I'm not sure which interface would work best on Linux. I've asked at my usual model rail forum too, but all I got there was instructions how to build your own interface with an a...

Re: Can see my neighbours' wi-fis but not my own, Acer Aspire 314, Mint 19.3

Thanks for the answers. A neighbour came by and logged in to the router. There was some setting there that had gone wrong (god knows how) and now it seems to work.

Can see my neighbours' wi-fis but not my own, Acer Aspire 314, Mint 19.3

Hi all! As the subject line said, I can't see my own wi-fi, but everyone else's. The connection works fine with cable. It all started yesterday when my wi-fi just disappeared. My mobile connects fine, just as my wife's laptop and mobile. So clearly the issue is in my computer. I'm running Mint 19.3 ...

Mint 19.3 won't boot (solved)

Hi! I'm running mint 19.3 on an acer aspire 314. Today in the evening, it stopped booting. I am not good at these kind of things, but I will describe as well as I can what happened. I was downloading a film, and didn't notice the ssd harddrive (the only hd in the machine) was getting full. So i stop...

I'll try that on Monday morning, sounds like a likely explanation. Thanks!

Re: Running mint from USB, shortcuts don't work

It's a USB install, not live USB. I tried to go through that link, but I'm afraid I didn't understand all of it. Mounting the HDD on which Windows and all my work files are is not a problem, and I can do this either automatically or by simply clicking on it after start-up. The problem is that the sh...

[Solved] Running mint from USB, shortcuts don't work

Hi all! I installed mint on a usb to run on my ageing work computer. Works great, with one exception. I made shortcuts on the Mint desktop to the folders I use most. To make these work, I have to mount the windows OS after start up. Not a big deal, it takes 3 seconds to open home folder and click on...

Re: Full Install to USB Drive: Four Options

Hi, I have a possibly stupid question: If I make a USB install with the BIOS version, what will happen if I put it in a computer with UEFI and windows 10? Will it just not work, or will I damage windows? Asking since I have made a USB for my job computer, and old W7 machine with BIOS. Its works badl...

Re: Can't see levels in update manager, 19.3

Thanks for the reply! I'm still a bit worried though. Are all the updates shown in the update manager considered safe now, or is there a new setting somewhere I haven't found where you can change what you see in the manager? It shows "Kernel headers for development" for example, which seems like som...

Can't see levels in update manager, 19.3

Hi! I just installed 19.3 on my new laptop. In update manager I can't see the security levels of the updates, all icons are just grey with no numbers on them. This might be a stupid question, but why? On my old laptop, running 18.3, it surely looked different, and now I'm worried I might install uns...

Re: Help chosing budget laptop for Mint

Thanks for all the input. As I believe I mentioned above, I'm based in Europe, so buying off American vendors was not really an alternative due to time and customs issues (they really delay parcels from third countries a lot here). Anyway, I bought the Acer (I really needed a computer quickly), and ...

Re: Help chosing budget laptop for Mint

Thanks for the reply. I usually prefer new stuff to used out of lots of really bad experience - I'm a rather unlucky person, I suppose. Buying off Amazon would also mean some hazzle with the customs agency, who love rummaging through parcels from outside the EU, and always means a delay for at least...

Help chosing budget laptop for Mint

Hello everyone, I seem to be needing some advice on buying a new laptop. My old HP died on me, and I need a new one rather soon. I don't really have the money to spend on a "proper" machine, so I'm looking at cheaper alternatives (all I need it for is word processing, browsing, and some basic photo ...

Settings applications won't launch

Hi! I'm running mint 18.3 cinnamon on an HP laptop. I just noticed that all applications under the "settings" tab in the mint menu have stopped working. I click on them and nothing happens. I tried to launch a few of them from terminal, and I got an error message that "module object has no attribute...
