Re: Running mint from USB, shortcuts don't work

I'll try that on Monday morning, sounds like a likely explanation. Thanks!

Re: Running mint from USB, shortcuts don't work

It's a USB install, not live USB. I tried to go through that link, but I'm afraid I didn't understand all of it. Mounting the HDD on which Windows and all my work files are is not a problem, and I can do this either automatically or by simply clicking on it after start-up. The problem is that the sh...

[Solved] Running mint from USB, shortcuts don't work

Hi all! I installed mint on a usb to run on my ageing work computer. Works great, with one exception. I made shortcuts on the Mint desktop to the folders I use most. To make these work, I have to mount the windows OS after start up. Not a big deal, it takes 3 seconds to open home folder and click on...

Re: Full Install to USB Drive: Four Options

Hi, I have a possibly stupid question: If I make a USB install with the BIOS version, what will happen if I put it in a computer with UEFI and windows 10? Will it just not work, or will I damage windows? Asking since I have made a USB for my job computer, and old W7 machine with BIOS. Its works badl...

Re: Can't see levels in update manager, 19.3

Thanks for the reply! I'm still a bit worried though. Are all the updates shown in the update manager considered safe now, or is there a new setting somewhere I haven't found where you can change what you see in the manager? It shows "Kernel headers for development" for example, which seems like som...

Can't see levels in update manager, 19.3

Hi! I just installed 19.3 on my new laptop. In update manager I can't see the security levels of the updates, all icons are just grey with no numbers on them. This might be a stupid question, but why? On my old laptop, running 18.3, it surely looked different, and now I'm worried I might install uns...

Re: Help chosing budget laptop for Mint

Thanks for all the input. As I believe I mentioned above, I'm based in Europe, so buying off American vendors was not really an alternative due to time and customs issues (they really delay parcels from third countries a lot here). Anyway, I bought the Acer (I really needed a computer quickly), and ...

Re: Help chosing budget laptop for Mint

Thanks for the reply. I usually prefer new stuff to used out of lots of really bad experience - I'm a rather unlucky person, I suppose. Buying off Amazon would also mean some hazzle with the customs agency, who love rummaging through parcels from outside the EU, and always means a delay for at least...

Help chosing budget laptop for Mint

Hello everyone, I seem to be needing some advice on buying a new laptop. My old HP died on me, and I need a new one rather soon. I don't really have the money to spend on a "proper" machine, so I'm looking at cheaper alternatives (all I need it for is word processing, browsing, and some basic photo ...

Settings applications won't launch

Hi! I'm running mint 18.3 cinnamon on an HP laptop. I just noticed that all applications under the "settings" tab in the mint menu have stopped working. I click on them and nothing happens. I tried to launch a few of them from terminal, and I got an error message that "module object has no attribute...

Re: Security notice: Meltdown and Spectre

Hi! 2 questions about the kernel update: - What is the difference between HWE and LTS? That is: which should I use? I use 18.3 MATE, updated in-system from 18.0. - It says that there were problems with "4.4.0-108 issues in particular were fixed since in 4.4.0-109". What does this mean? Are the issue...

Re: Cinnamon, Firefox,and battery life

Petermint: The Atom N570 has the same number of cores and clock speed as my i5. The Atom must have a good video processing section. I wonder if all Atoms are the same. I wish :-) Doesn't matter how many cores it has, when the cores hardly do anything. Like all atom processors, it's weak (I'm getting...

Re: (SOLVED) Horizontal line on screen - hardware?

Thanks for the help! I took the machine back to the shop, and they exchanged it without a question (well, they had just sold the last they had, so they ordered a new one from the distributor - I'll have it tomorrow or Tuesday).

Re: Cinnamon, Firefox,and battery life

I run Mint 17.3 MATE on a netbook with an Atom N570 processor. Firefox works fine, just like most films and editing RAW image files, although practically no games (except for Open TTD - the only game I play) work. So I would say basically anything stronger than a crap atom processor is enough for Mi...

Re: Horizontal line on screen - hardware?

Thanks for the replies! I ran it from USB just now, and the line was still there (kind of thin and florescent). Everything seems to work fine, I just have that line there whatever I do (it's there even in boot menu and when the screen is dark, although very faint). So I guess I'll have to take it ba...

(SOLVED) Horizontal line on screen - hardware?

Hi again! I seem to be running into problems often lately. I just bought an HP laptop today (HP 250 G4, intel i3) and started it up. Since I bought one without windows, I installed Mint 18 MATE 64-bit immediately. It didn't take long until I noticed a thin horizontal line stretching right over the w...
