Re: Verifying 18.3: "sha256sum" is not recognized as an internal or external command, an executable program or a batch f

I tried uploading my avatar on an image site and pasted the url but it doesn't work. Well, you were on the right track... Was the image too large maybe, or did the URL start with HTTP instead of HTTPS? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that that might be a factor. Mine is on https://imgbb.com. S...

Re: Verifying 18.3: "sha256sum" is not recognized as an internal or external command, an executable program or a batch f

Okay, I used WinHash to calculate the SHA256 and it worked. Sorry for the bother. That's no bother, that's what these forums are for. :) When you've found a solution, please mark the topic as SOLVED by editing the first post and adding [SOLVED] to the title. That way, you're helping others find the...

Re: Verifying 18.3: "sha256sum" is not recognized as an internal or external command, an executable program or a batch f

Okay, I used WinHash to calculate the SHA256 and it worked. Sorry for the bother. Verifying the hash is only half of the process - the other half is to verify the signature of the hash code file to be sure that it is really from Linux Mint. See the fred-barclay link in my previous post for an expla...

Those instructions were written for someone using Linux. There is a tutorial on how to use Windows to verify an .iso file:

Ah, thank you.

[Solved] Verifying 18.3: "sha256sum" is not recognized ...

I've just downloaded the "linuxmint-18.3-cinnamon-64bit.iso" and am trying to verify it. I'm following the instructions that I found here: https://linuxmint.com/verify.php, downloaded the recommanded files, put them into an ISO folder and when I run the command, after navigating to the folder, I get...

Re: Linux Mint 18 = Ubuntu 16.04 + Cinnamon 3.0?

A couple of things come to mind . . Mint's own stuff; Driver Manager, Software Manager, Update Manager (with unique safety features), all of the new X programs . . . . As richyrich says. That forum statement is just as unfounded as saying that "Ubuntu is just Debian with Unity". So I thought....

Linux Mint 18 = Ubuntu 16.04 + Cinnamon 3.0?

The title is a description of Linux Mint that I read on another forum. I'd like to know if it's true. If it's not, I'd like to know what are the main differences between the two distributions.

Thank you! :)

Re: MSI GE62 6QF Apache Pro

I don't see a reason, why it should not work. But try it yourself: Download and burn the iso image of Mint and boot it as life system. Thanks but I'd like to make sure before doing this. I'd mainly like to know if, once Linux Mint installed, 3D acceleration will be functional. There are proprietary...

Hello everyone, I just bought the computer referenced in the title and I plan on installing Linux Mint 18.1 "Serena" Cinnamon on it. I'd like to know if the computer is compatible with this version. So it looks. I'm burning an OpenSuSe image right now, hoping it will install; if it does I'll be able to install the proprietary drivers I need for my cards.

Re: LM18/AMD APU graphics cards: cannot boot without adding "nomodeset xforcevesa"

After investigation, it appears that the graphics cards use the driver "vesa" instead of the driver "radeon". Vesa doesn't provide acceleration and Radeon is there for AMD cards so, I suppose that it provides acceleration. How can I simply switch to radeon; would removing vesa be enough?

Re: Non coding

Maybe Scratch? I don't know much about it, but I guess it's popular on the Raspberry Pi. As I understand it, you just connect blocks together to create a program. That's "visual scripting" but you won't make a game with this, especially if you know nothing about coding. If you want to make a game, ...

I don't see how; even if you use "visual scripting" you would have to learn basics of coding in order to know what you are doing. Learning to code is not that difficult anyway and it's a lot more rewarding. ;)

Hello from France!

Hi, I'm new to these forums, not so new to Linux though. I was an Ubuntu user a few years ago and I had to abandon it when I bought my present computer: Ubunu didn't boot. I went back to Windows 7, which is my favourite Windows os; I find it pretty decent, easy to use and elegant. In order to avoid ...
