Re: Microsoft Office collected actual content from users' applications

Playing the Devil's or M$'s Advocate, Win 10's Cloud-based AI and Digital Assistant/Cortana need to collect nearly all of the user's private info or data in order to be able to be artificially-intelligent and to digitally-assist the user as much as possible through machine-learning. It's part and pa...

Re: [SOLVED] Install to Win7, "No root file system is defined"

PS: If other people have asked the same thing before, perhaps this information should be added to the installation instructions. . In a dual-boot system, because Windows cannot read Linux files, Linux should be installed after Windows since the last OS installed takes over bootloading, ie the Linux...

Re: Install to Win7, "No root file system is defined"

but double-clicking the UNUSABLE partition does nothing. . That's likely because a Legacy BIOS Win 7 install with an MBR/ms-dos disk is limited to 4 Primary partitions = you need to delete one of the data partitions, eg delete the 24GB ntfs partition after saving the data. The deletion can be done ...

Re: Bisected: The Unfortunate Reason Linux 4.20 Is Running Slower

A 10-15% reduction in speed is significant, though it seems many would argue that Intel were actually trying to improve speed whilst sacrificing security, so not so much a slow down as just not using a speed up which was inappropriately designed.. . This latest Linux 4.20 testing endeavor started o...

Re: Problems installing Grub 2 in Acer aspire es 15

I have been trying to install Linux 19 in my Acer aspire ES 15. I made a bootable USB stick and when installing it will freeze with Grub 2. . To install in UEFI/GPT-disk mode, ensure that Secure Boot, Fast Boot and CSM(or Legacy BIOS) are disabled in System BIOS Setup, and the Live LM media(DVD or ...

Re: Dual Boot Win 10 & LM 19 - LM19 No Longer Completes Booting Up

Installed LM19 Cinnamon as dual boot with Win 10. Was working OK for a while. However, now when I boot LM19, it doesn't complete booting up to desktop. . Does Win 10 still boot.? For a dual-boot system, it is quite normal for a forced Win 10 auto-upgrade to bork the Linux Grub bootloader because th...

Re: Canonical says 18.04 will now be LTS for 10 yrs

My hunch was correct, ie Canonical Inc only provided extended support for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for a maximum of 3 years, ie from its EOL in April 2017 until April 2020. ... https://www.ubuntu.com/esm . Similarly for Ubuntu 14.04/16.04 LTS, ie free 5 years + paid 3 years = total maximum of 8 years of LTS...

Re: Canonical says 18.04 will now be LTS for 10 yrs

How will this affect Linux Mint versions? Longer support too? . For free or non-commercial Ubuntu 18.04 and LM 19 users, LTS support will likely remain unchanged at 5 years, ie not extended to 10 years. AFAIK, companies can run Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS for free for 5 years only. Longer than that, th...

It just seems hard to understand how that might have happened.
.
Maybe an update to the System BIOS firmware or CPU Microcode or Linux kernel to patch for Meltdown/Spectre is the cause of the problem.

Re: Is Linuxing easy?

Michael Louwe mentions that 8th gen Intel's require Linux "kernel 4.17 or higher" and that LM19 does not have it. Is it bad that I do not know what a "kernel" is?
