Unexpected Crashes/Freezes

Lately, I've been having a lot of trouble with this in the middle of my online activity. Since this only started a few days ago, it feels natural to assume a bad system update probably triggered this. Otherwise it's probably a hardware issue related to the CPU. Any ideas?

Re: Update Shield Icon Is Being Fickle.

Is the xapp status applet as important for system functionality/stability as the warnings would indicate? One reason I haven't installed it yet is because I was unsure that it was really needed and worried that it could bork my computer. Should I install it? Is there any need to uninstall/disable gt...

Re: Update Shield Icon Is Being Fickle.

Try this: Right click panel>applets> download tab>if it offers to update cache, do so, then back to the manage tab and click the little curved arrow at the bottom of the window. When I right click over the taskbar, all I get is a little menu reading, "+ Add to Panel, Properties, Reset Panel, D...

Update Shield Icon Is Being Fickle.

I did the updates and upgraded to Tricia. Not long after this, I notice that sometimes the little update manager icon will be totally absent in some sessions whereas the new warning HUD always appears without fail and implores me to install the "Xapp Status Applet". Usually rebooting the c...

Malware Question about Phishing E-Mails

Hey guys, I'm sure that similar questions have been asked before, but what is the minimum amount of participation a Mint user would need on their own end to inadvertently activate a malicious script or process on their system through a spoofed trojan e-mail? As I understood it through the years, no ...

Re: Unexplained Mouse Activity?

Update: It still happens occasionally while streaming. Could the graphical print on the polyurethane mousepad actually set it off? It's not even a glossy surface like the old Ubuntu one was.

Package Failure While Updating

After a fresh install, I ran updates and got error messages reading things like, "file descriptor 9 (pipe: [44903]) leaked on lvs invocation. Parent PID 24433: /bin/sh" and "no matching swap available". There was a warning window that stated, "not all changes and updates suc...

Re: Firejail Setup Help

To run anything else in a sandbox (libre office, vlc, or other browser), do I simply repeat the process of editing the apps from the startup menu the same way I did Firefox?

How to use a flash drive to reinstate a system snapshot on a borked system?

Suppose the system gets BBARed (borked beyond all repair) due to a bad update, which won't allow you to use the terminal or the start menu on the bottom taskbar - basically leaving you dead in the water; how does one use Timeshift to undo such a grievous mess? How does having a backup of the last sn...

Re: [Fix available] Window manager xfwm 4.13.0 broken after last mesa update

Okay, I blacklisted Mesa and xfwm4. Now it wants to install additional packages with those names on them. Which updates are dependent on those? I'd like to blacklist them too.

How to Mitigate Against Bad Updates?

Some time this week, around Tuesday, I downloaded some updates. One was a security update for the linux kernal's firmware, and the others (about 5 or so) were all system updates for bug fixes. One of those system updates triggered an additional change with a prompt informing me that something called...

Sagan HIDS & Wireshark Won't Launch

I've been having problems with Wireshark Network Traffic Analyzer for a while now. The program icon is at least visible from the menu screen, problem is, it will not launch when I click it. I installed Wireshark directly from the software repositories more than once before I finally just gave up on ...

Is Mint Compatible With Any Encrypted Card Swipers?

I've been assured more than once that keylogging software is only a huge threat in the "poisonous" Windows Ecosystem, but the possibility of a Linux desktop/laptop being infected by one (however remote) does still exist. Some card swipers designed specifically for online shopping claim to ...

Re: Unexplained Mouse Activity?

Seriously, what sort of surface is the mouse on? Mine usually rests on the arm of the chair in which I am sitting. Although it is not slippery just moving slightly in the chair may cause the sensor to read the mouse has "moved". A shiny surface is even more problematic and a butterfly far...
