Re: Firejail Setup Help

To run anything else in a sandbox (libre office, vlc, or other browser), do I simply repeat the process of editing the apps from the startup menu the same way I did Firefox?

Re: Firejail Setup Help

Firstly try starting a browser with FJ: such as: firejail firefox then you can run firejail --tree, firejail --list. etc Okay, when I tried doing it manually, I got these messages... Reading profile /etc/firejail/firefox.profile Reading profile /etc/firejail/firefox-common.profile Reading profile /...

Firejail Setup Help

I was following the instructions on "easy linux tips project" on running Firefox in a sandbox ( https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/sandbox.html ); after seeing that the version I had downloaded from the terminal was outdated, I went to Sourceforge and downloaded the latest LTS version of it...

How to use a flash drive to reinstate a system snapshot on a borked system?

Suppose the system gets BBARed (borked beyond all repair) due to a bad update, which won't allow you to use the terminal or the start menu on the bottom taskbar - basically leaving you dead in the water; how does one use Timeshift to undo such a grievous mess? How does having a backup of the last sn...

Re: [Fix available] Window manager xfwm 4.13.0 broken after last mesa update

Okay, I blacklisted Mesa and xfwm4. Now it wants to install additional packages with those names on them. Which updates are dependent on those? I'd like to blacklist them too.

How to Mitigate Against Bad Updates?

Some time this week, around Tuesday, I downloaded some updates. One was a security update for the linux kernal's firmware, and the others (about 5 or so) were all system updates for bug fixes. One of those system updates triggered an additional change with a prompt informing me that something called...

Sagan HIDS & Wireshark Won't Launch

I've been having problems with Wireshark Network Traffic Analyzer for a while now. The program icon is at least visible from the menu screen, problem is, it will not launch when I click it. I installed Wireshark directly from the software repositories more than once before I finally just gave up on ...

Re: Gaming Mouse

There have been a number of queries in relation to gaming mice and programming the extra buttons. For info.....I recently purchased a Roccat Kiro gaming mouse that has up to five additional buttons from the norm, I programmed these on a Windows machine using the download from Roccat and the mouse "...

Is Mint Compatible With Any Encrypted Card Swipers?

I've been assured more than once that keylogging software is only a huge threat in the "poisonous" Windows Ecosystem, but the possibility of a Linux desktop/laptop being infected by one (however remote) does still exist. Some card swipers designed specifically for online shopping claim to guard agai...

Re: Unexplained Mouse Activity?

Seriously, what sort of surface is the mouse on? Mine usually rests on the arm of the chair in which I am sitting. Although it is not slippery just moving slightly in the chair may cause the sensor to read the mouse has "moved". A shiny surface is even more problematic and a butterfly fart could be...

The "All About Home Folder Encryption" Thread

I tried encrypting my home folder using these two articles as a reference, and I got dragged through the briars. https://www.howtogeek.com/116032/how-to-encrypt-your-home-folder-after-installing-ubuntu/ https://www.lifewire.com/should-you-encrypt-home-folder-2202069 I haven't been locked out ...

Re: Security Resources/Tutorials?

Pjotr, two things...regarding the "Improve the settings for installing software1.2.1." section of "10 Things To Do First in Linux Mint 19.1 Xfce", when I input "sudo sed -i 's/false/true/g' /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00recommends" into the terminal following the previous step, nothing seems to happen. You mentioned the importance of being highly selective of which Firefox Add-ons to trust. What is your opinion of Ghostery, Ublock Origin, and Noscript?

Security Resources/Tutorials?

I'm looking for linux security tutorials/courses that are dedicated to guarding against hacker intrusions, and finding and removing stealth rootkits; hopefully simplified and fairly straightforward. Does anybody have some good links on this subject? Thanks.

Unexplained Mouse Activity?

I've noticed sometimes when I'm watching a video on youtube, the mouse arrow will seemingly activate and reappear on the screen when my hand isn't even on it. It will either move very little, or not at all. Still, I find this a bit unnerving. Could this be a telltale sign of a possible hacker or a r...

Re: When and how to upgrade

Alright, the other day I got a category 4 security update on standby called "Systemd". I haven't installed it yet. I've looked around for information on support deadlines and what exactly it does in plain English. I've had no luck. All I could find, is that supposedly there was another package that ...

Creating a Dummy Twitter Account

Okay, so I had my VPN ready to go and everything. Just when I thought I had my secondary twitter account, I get an error message during the verification code activation that prevents me from completing the account creation process. I tried again, and the same thing happened. Is it because my IP didn...

HDD Assessment: "Disk is OK, 2 bad sectors (32° C / 90° F)" COA?

What course of action should I take? It says it's OK, but is this a potentially serious problem that I need to nip in the bud quickly? Thanks.
