Re: Mozilla reluctant to start at login

Hello again, Thanks to advice from karlchen and ajgreeny Mozilla's offspring are now behaving 'normally'. For those who follow and suffer similar irritations, there is a straightforward rectification, as follows: In the main menu, select 'Preferences', then 'Startup applications' This brings up a li...

Re: Mozilla reluctant to start at login

Hello karlchen I thank you for your response. Pardon my ignorance, but I can't find any means of adjusting the start delay of Firefox or Thunderbird via Preferences in their drop-down menus. I am not proficient in Linux, which is why I originally posted this question as 'Mozilla's mystery malady' in...

[SOLVED] Mozilla reluctant to start at login

Hello, I'm using Mint 18 Sarah with Cinnamon 3.0.7. For a month or more now, both Firefox and Thunderbird have occasionally failed to start after a fresh login. Going back into the 'close down' window and selecting 'restart' usually brings the two programs to life. Unfortunately, the failure to enab...

Mozilla's mysterious malady (MOVED TO SOFTWARE)

Hello, I'm not entirely 'newbie', more inept geriatric, but bear with me, please. I'm using Mint 18 Sarah with Cinnamon 3.0.7. For two or three weeks now both Firefox and Thunderbird have occasionally failed to start after a fresh login. Going back into the 'close down' window and selecting 'restart...

Bingo :D Lots of lovely sound as soon as I invoked your last suggestion. I can't thank you enough. This forum is wonderful.

Thanks again,

Derek.

Re: Alsamixer and Audacity not recognising input from Newmark usb turntable

Thank you norm.h and decrepit for your thoughts. Every little helps . Big progress, MrEen ! Following your advice to raise the PCM(?) in AlsaMixer I now have the sort of signal trace I was expecting; lots of substantial peaks and troughs. However, still no sound from the speakers either when monitor...

Re: Alsamixer and Audacity not recognising input from Newmark usb turntable

Hello again, MrEen, I have to confess that the selections on Pulse Audio were counter-intuitive to me. Something 'greyed-out' usually means its not available, but I now know better. Anyway, I now see a feeble recording profile when Audacity is set to record, but not the range of peaks and troughs th...

Re: Alsamixer and Audacity not recognising input from Newmark usb turntable turntable

Update to my post above.

Apologies. The screenshots aren't appearing, although they are on my desktop. Should they have been loaded directly to the Forum server? I can't find any advice on the procedure but I will keep looking, and post a separate question.

Derek.

Re: Alsamixer and Audacity not recognising input from Newmark usb turntable turntable

Hello gentlemen, I have ensured that the turntable, which is designed to work through a PC, is plugged into a USB2 socket, not USB3. A peculiar result(?) is that the volume control is showing input at two locations, 'Built-in audio analogue stereo' and 'PCM2900 audio codec analogue stereo'. The latt...

Re: Alsamixer and Audacity not recognising input from Newmark usb turntable turntable

Hello again, MrEen, I have worked through your suggestions, and I see activity in the monitor region of Audacity, but no identifiable sound coming out of the speakers, only something resembling a very muffled beat. This latter responds to switching on and off in Audacity, or the speakers, which have...

Re: Alsamixer and Audacity not recognising input from Newmark usb turntable turntable

Hello MrEem, rerunning /home/myusername/.config/pulse informs me that it is a directory, which is an improvement on previously. However, pulseaudio -k produces nothing. Equally, enabling 'loopback' in AlsaMixer has no effect. Moving on to your suggestions, pacmd list-cards produces: coachman@coachma...

Alsamixer and Audacity not recognising input from Newmark usb turntable [SOLVED]

I'm not so much a 'newbie' as an 'elderly inept', but this seems the right place, so please bear with me. My problem is that the 'sound' from a record on the turntable does not reach the speakers. The speakers are operational when playing youtube videos, and the volume can be adjusted either from th...

Re: Matching drivers to an Epson XP-6105 scanner/printer

Good evening Gentlemen,

I am delighted to report that, having identified and corrected my own typo made during the editing of

Code: Select all

/etc/imagescan/imagescan.conf
scanning and printing are now operational. I thank you all for your advice and support.

Re: Matching drivers to an Epson XP-6105 scanner/printer

Good evening Gentlemen, Following the the manual and the interpretation from michael-hi I have edited the file /etc/imagescan/imagescan.conf . Nevertheless, Image Scan and Simple Scan simply (no pun intended!) refuse to see the device. In the absence of any further help from the manual, I feel an ur...

Re: Matching drivers to an Epson XP-6105 scanner/printer

Back again after a day of contemplation and further confusion. Perusal of the manual for Image Scan V3 contains the instruction to open /etc/imagescan/imagescan.conf and edit the contents, which are: [devices] ; myscanner.udi = esci:networkscan://192.168.0.2:1865 ; myscanner.vendor = Epson ; myscann...

Re: Matching drivers to an Epson XP-6105 scanner/printer

Thank you, michael-hi for your perceptive observation. As always, the on-looker sees most. I was about to post to kyphi the contents of the plug-in that most-closely matched iscan-network-nt_1.1.1-1_amd64.deb . Now I'm confused, but I will peruse the manual for Image Scan V3 and endeavour to escape ...

Re: Matching drivers to an Epson XP-6105 scanner/printer

I omitted to add to the previous post that, with the additional lines inserted as surmised,

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf
results in a blank, new file. There is nothing about 'scsi' or 'usb', so I can't add 'net' or the IP address.

Re: Matching drivers to an Epson XP-6105 scanner/printer

Thank you, brian_p for what would be a nice solution, but you underestimate my ignorance and timidity. I wouldn't know where to start or how to proceed from the welter of prose on your link. I'm afraid, kyphi , that I have come unstuck. I don't think I understand your instruction Observing the alpha...

Re: Matching drivers to an Epson XP-6105 scanner/printer

Hello, again, kyphi , Thank you for your further advice. It highlights my woeful ignorance of the underlying 'nuts-and-bolts' of Linux. First off, I looked for Nano in the menu. I appear only to have Gedit. However, the Software Manager indicates that Nano is already installed.....but where? The sea...

Re: Matching drivers to an Epson XP-6105 scanner/printer

Thank you kyphi . Your reply was exactly the uncomplicated explanation and advice I hoped for. Unfortunately we are not 'out of the wood' yet. The 'add printer' process was successfully navigated, and the printer/scanner is connected to my network. However, neither Image Scan (Epson) nor Simple Scan...
