Re: which browser you prefer

I use Opera because it's the only browser that preserves all of the functionality but doesn't bog down or overwhelm my old outdated and inadequate hardware. It's nice having searchable bookmarks. It handles everything that I've ever tried to do in firefux.

SOLVED: Like Opera But It Constantly Freezes! Why?

Well, now I am very hopeful! I followed a tip posted at the Opera forum and manually downloaded and installed the latest version 67.0.3575.31 (after doing a complete removal using synaptic package manager). I have been surfing and browsing now for almost an hour with no freezing and no lockups! It w...

Re: Like Opera But It Constantly Freezes! Why?

It's the opposite story at the Opera web site. There are tons of posts from people with all kinds of operating systems and all kinds of hardware having this exact same issue. Many of them have said it started recently after they installed an Opera update, and have said the browser they used to love ...

Re: Like Opera But It Constantly Freezes! Why?

The Opera forum web site has hundreds of people complaining about this same freezing up issue, with all OS's Windows Mac and Linux, but nobody has any answer or fix. If Opera has no response then...... Firefox is as good as it gets? That's a sad statement....

Re: Like Opera But It Constantly Freezes! Why?

Does my odd problem with Opera have anything to do with this list of errors?

Re: Like Opera But It Constantly Freezes! Why?

Do you have a memory or CPU resource problem when you run Opera? See 'Menu -> Administration -> System Monitor'. Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi and Brave browsers are all based on Chromium open-source software, so your problem may be caused by conflicting software libraries or a failed (incomplete) install...

Re: Like Opera But It Constantly Freezes! Why?

I'm not entirely certain, but you're running an unsupported (past EOL) kernel there. On hardware that old, I'd stick with the LTS kernel (4.15) and the LTS xserver packages. That may clear up the issues for you. With that Nvidia chipset, you might have issues with the 5.3 kernel, especially if you ...

SOLVED: Like Opera But It Constantly Freezes! Why?

Solution at the bottom, my last post about installing the Opera update. As soon as I click on anything or start typing it freezes. As soon as I mouse over the "Easy Setup" button in the upper right, it catches up and shows what I've been typing or executes the mouse click. As you can imagine, this r...

Internet Speed and Browser Choice - It Matters!

I've been trying to decipher why my internet speed has been so slow. My ISP line is a 500mbps connection, but the ookla speedtest was consistently showing speeds of only 100 to 150 mbps. Well, that was in Firefox, and even slower in Chrome. Then someone suggested trying other browsers since the brow...

Re: CLI Speedtest vs Web Browser Speedtest - Why Different?

Well... note again that the network part is fine: you are getting (nearly; but that's normal if the by speedtest contacted server is not directly at your own ISP) the full 500/500 of your internet connection. It's the rest of the system that's going to have an issue with the speedtest.net interface...

Re: CLI Speedtest vs Web Browser Speedtest - Why Different?

But looking at your specs I expect you're simply on puny hardware. You'd need to post the output of inxi -Fxz for us to have a better idea. Thanks! Unfortunately, I believe you are correct, as a few others have suggested. This is old and inadequate hardware. I've had this machine for at least 10 ye...

Re: CLI Speedtest vs Web Browser Speedtest - Why Different?

Given that the result from the terminal is fine, it's not an issue with your system as such. Try with a different browser and if that helps, ogle any addons you may have enabled in Firefox. Tried Chrome, same thing. The speedtest results were actually a lot slower in Chrome. rootbeer@SC59:~$ ethtoo...

CLI Speedtest vs Web Browser Speedtest - Why Different?

Here is the result of speedtest from a CLI, it appears to show that the pcie ethernet adapter is working at the full intended speed. rootbeer@SC59:~$ speedtest Retrieving speedtest.net configuration... Testing from Allo Communications LLC (104.xxx.xxx.xxx)... Retrieving speedtest.net server list... ...

Re: Need to restart wired connection after sleep

I had one system that if I used sleep it would just not boot up again till I restarted it. I suggest having the monitor to go sleep and not the desktop. I know of a few PCIE wifi cards that work with Ubuntu and mint one is here. The one I use is discontinued I think. That's what mine does. If I bre...

Re: Will This Ethernet Adapter Be Easy To Get Working?

But with the wired connection to the router all I can ever achieve is maybe 50mbit, once in a while maybe 70mbit, but that's it. '50Mbits maybe 70Mbits' is meaningless on its own. What is that? Internet speed? File transfer speed between machines? What protocol? SMB? If it's internet, what speed sh...

Re: Will This Ethernet Adapter Be Easy To Get Working?

Is this a driver problem? It's too early to say. install ethtool and use it to check the speed on the NIC, as in ethtool eth0 , where eth0 is the kernel name for the NIC. Also check the lights on the outside of the card against the user manual. It could be a dodgy cable. Check that the router suppo...

Re: Will This Ethernet Adapter Be Easy To Get Working?

Intel It should just work, plug it in and enjoy. Well, it works, but that is all. Everything I can find about this hardware says that my PCIe x1 slot with this adapter should be capable of near gigabit speeds. I know my machine is not new, but even the specs at Gigabyte for this moboard say the PCI...

Re: Playing Bluray movies

Thank you for your respond. Yes I know Blu ray is not an option. Not only did I stopped trying to get Bluray working on Linux, but stopped completely with Linux. I have to disagree with ‘Linux doing things better than Windows’. In my opinion… it depends… If you know everything about Linux it’s grea...

SOLVED: Intel Ethernet Adapter Works But Is Slow

SUMMARY: This is a problem caused by my old hardware. Thank You for the replies. After a bit of research I have come to think maybe this adapter will work fine with Linux Mint 19? This one is easily available for between $20-30 bucks. Everything I read suggests that Intel is the most likely to be co...
