Re: Nvidia 390.25 completely breaks Cinnamon (LM18.3)

Not nearly enough useful info there. Copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here: inxi -Fxz Hi Rob! Here it is. $ inxi -Fxz System: Host: desktop Kernel: 4.13.0-32-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0) Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.7 (Gtk 3.18.9) Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia Machine:...

Nvidia 390.25 completely breaks Cinnamon (LM18.3)

Hi all, I updated my Nvidia binary driver from the PPA to 390.25 and after a reboot, I couldn't even boot into Cinnamon. All I was getting was black screen and a mouse cursor that I could move around but not much else. After getting into shell, I ran nvidia-xconfig and re-generate xorg.conf file and...

Re: Cinnamon corrupted? All I get is black screen and mouse pointer

What was the update? I wouldn't be so quick to say the problem is with Cinnamon. Hi Moem! I finally updated to 18.3 from 18.2. Something is wrong with some of the Cinnamon settings. I know that for sure because I created a brand new user and started Cinnamon desktop and everything works fine. But w...

Cinnamon corrupted? All I get is black screen and mouse pointer

Well, after doing an update today and rebooting, I was greeted with a black screen and the mouse pointer. All I could do is move it. After dropping into shell, I was able to restart cinnamon and I did get the default cinnamon theme/settings. Did my settings get messed up? How do I remove all the set...

How to theme Cinnamon UI buttons?

Hi all, After trying a bunch of themes, I've come across some that I really like but none of them is exactly like I want it. So I'm trying to theme Cinnamon myself and improve some of the themes :) I've started off with Arc theme as a base (I really like this theme) but I don't like how the buttons ...

Re: How to (reliably) load Xmodmap key remappings when Cinnamon starts?

I don't know if it's kosher or not, but I put my startup calls into /etc/profile, at the end. You should use ~/.profile for customizations since /etc/profile can be overwritten by upgrades. Also, the issue with that is that bash will only start when you open a terminal. So until you open the termin...

How to (reliably) load Xmodmap key remappings when Cinnamon starts?

Hi all, I have a keyboard with two Super (Win) keys and would like to repurpose the right one to be a Context Menu key. I've looked at Cinnamon keyboard options and haven't been able to find this remapping. So I've created .Xmodmap file as many online guides suggest you do. In my .xinitrc, I have th...

Re: Proper way to restart a crashed cinnamon?

REISUB should almost always work. Even when my graphics card drivers locked up my machine, REISUB worked. But if it doesn't, nothing else will work and only a hard reset will bring it back.

Need to kill Xorg is also rare nowadays.

Re: Proper way to restart a crashed cinnamon?

You may well be right. Alternatively, this was some advice I dug up on the net. pressing Alt+F2, type r, and press Enter, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace (restart Xorg), in TTY use command: sudo service mdm restart If you install Mint 18.2 or upgraded to 18.2 and followed the instructions to replace mdm with li...

Re: Proper way to restart a crashed cinnamon?

No worries. In System Settings->Keyboard there is a 'shortcuts' tab that lists all the keyboard shortcuts. Found it! Neat. I also learned other handy shortcuts (quick way to lock the screen). Thanks. One thing though... I'm not 100% sure that shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+Esc) will work if the Cinnamon proces...

Proper way to restart a crashed cinnamon?

Hi all, I've experienced cinnamon crash maybe 2-3 times in around a year (which is pretty great stability-wise) and it happened to me today. Basically, all the cinnamon window widgets disappeared and I was left with chrome-less terminals, browser windows etc. I could also not switch to my terminal s...

How to modify some of the Nemo/Cinnamon/GTK app settings now that gnome-tweak-tool doesn't work?

HI all, I used to use gnome-tweak-tool to set some of the hidden Nemo settings but after updating to 18.2 and updating gnome-tweak-tool to 3.24, it won't start anymore. If I try to run it from command line, it says: WARNING : Shell not installed or running. So is there some other graphical way to se...

[Solved] GNOME's Nautilus took over default functions from Nemo

Hi all, I run latest LM18.1 with everything updated. I also have a bunch of GNOME applications and I guess one of them installed GNOME's Nautilus FM a while back. One thing that annoys me a lot is that Nautilus is sometimes opened instead of Nemo. For example, if I click on the Trash applet in the p...

Nvidia binary driver + Suspend = Mayhem after Waking up

Hi all, I got a new Nvidia 1070 card for Christmas and while everything works great, I cannot suspend my PC. When I was using built-in Intel GPU, suspend and waking up from suspend was working perfectly. But when I now wake up from suspend with Nvidia card/driver present, there's a just a huge mess ...

How to quickly switch sound output devices?

Hi all! I'm using LM18.1 with Cinnamon 3.2.7. One of the common tasks that I do multiple times per day is to switch between audio outputs. I sometimes like to send the sound to my speakers and sometimes to my headphones. The way I've been doing it now is to select output in Sound part of System Sett...

How to center Login dialog box?

Hi guys, I have a large ultrawide monitor and the positioning of the login dialog box has always bothered me. It's positioned to the far left and I feel like I have to bend my neck to see it. Every other OS has their login box in the middle of the screen and I'd like to position in there as well. Ho...
