Can Mint and Windows 10 Coexist At All?

Initially, on this machine I'm on right now, I made the attempt to dual boot Windows 10 and Linux Mint, only to have that one massive Windows update hose my Linux partitions when it was installed. Apparently, Windows has a habit of arbitrarily erasing and overriding anything "not Windows" on dual bo...

Weird Hiccup In My System?

I got home tonight from work, booted up as usual, and all of a sudden, my desktop image had reverted to the default "LM" image, my Brave Browser icon was no longer on the desktop, and I'm in the process of restoring all my passwords I'd had saved in my browser. I don't appear to have updated the dis...

WD MyBook External HDD Not Mounting At All

I've an older (maybe 10 years old or so) Western Digital MyBook external HDD that I tried connecting to my Mint 19.3 machine to see about getting stuff off of it onto this machine, and it's being impossible. If it mounts at all, it mounts for about a minute or so, then disconnects and refuses to do ...

Re: How To Get File Permissions In Mint?

I tried this command (sudo pip3 install pywal) again and got the same message. Really, all I need to know is how to correct this so that I can revert ownership of all this back to the way it needs to be (to me). Installing pip is secondary at best. This is just puzzling more than anything else.

Re: How To Get File Permissions In Mint?

Please run following in your HOME folder. Dont run it anywhere else as it will wreck your system otherwise. sudo chown -R $USER:$USER . As in open a terminal and replace "$USER" with my username? Better still run sudo chown -R $USER:$USER $HOME Just copy paste it. I ran it in a terminal and got no ...

How To Get File Permissions In Mint?

Let me start by saying, apologies if this is in the wrong section. When attempting to install Pip in my system just now, I received this message: "The directory '/home/maskedriderchris/.cache/pip/http' or its parent directory is not owned by the current user and the cache has been disabled. Please c...

Is WINE Worth Using In Linux Mint?

...or is it only a gateway to allow viruses and malware into one's Linux system? For gaming more than anything else (such as Steam), is why I'm asking this. Thanks for any and all input!

How To Make Mint Default In Dual Boot Setup?

As of yesterday I have a new machine built that is dual booting both Windows 10 and Linux Mint 19.3, and it's great, but...likely due to UEFI, the machine immediately defaults to Windows when booting up, since I installed Windows first (as a couple of articles suggested. notably on It's FOSS). After...

What's Up With Casper and Mesa?

I'm curious as to why Casper and Mesa are showing up in my Update Manager? What purpose do those two packages serve, if any, and are they worth it? Wanting to know more before I install them.

Is Anybody Having Issues With Brave Browser?

I've been noticing some odd quirks with Brave browser recently, as in: 1.) Overshooting between pages when going back and forth (as in going to one link on a site, then overshooting by two pages past the one you were headed back to) 2.) Having to click more than once to get a link to respond to bein...

Re: Weird Error Message in 19.03 When Updating

I tried several different mirrors--assuming that you meant me changing them in the Update Manager--and got the same error message claiming the same thing over and over. Aggravating! Not sure what to make of that.

Weird Error Message in 19.3 When Updating

Hello all! The last few times I've updated, when I refresh the list of updates, I receive the following error messages: Could not download all repository indexes The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the fail...

Why Is Brave Browser Suddenly Not Opening Certain URLs?

I'm encountering a maddening error with Brave Browser, all of a sudden. Every time I type a URL into the address bar, all of a sudden it opens up my Downloads folder, as though I'm trying to save the URL instead of go to it. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Any Brave users out there to give me...

Re: More Dual Boot Questions

On second thought, I was able to get Windows installed successfully, so then how does one go about installing Mint next to it? Anything in particular I need to worry about when so doing?

More Dual Boot Questions

So, I've decided to abandon the idea of two flavors of Linux on one HD (SSD, actually) and on my laptop--a Dell Latitude E6410 series--I'd like to see about installing Windows 8.1 alongside Mint 18.3 instead. All the stuff I'm seeing online only details how to install Mint alongside Windows on a Win...

Re: Dual Boot Weirdness

Try this. Boot a live session. Open Terminal. Run sudo fsck -yv /dev/sda2 . As you're in a live session, no password will be required. Then, still in the live session, open Gparted and see whether you can make the partition changes. Note: fsck and Gparted only work on unmounted partitions, so it's ...

Re: Dual Boot Weirdness

None of those commands worked at all in the terminal. I opened a terminal, entered several of them, and absolutely nothing happened. Holding down the shift key during reboot didn't go into the recovery menu, either. I suspect a clean reinstall of Ubuntu is in my future, to try this again? Either tha...
