Re: Trouble with 4.15.0-20 kernel

Hi tomdkat,

They're already published in the main repositories. It can take a little longer if you're using a mirror (they usually sync with the main repositories twice a day but some can take longer to update).

Re: Trouble with 4.15.0-20 kernel

Both issues are now resolved and updates were shipped to all 18.x point releases. Here's a summary of the situation. Problem #1: Starting with kernel 4.15.0-20, a new package was introduced called linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-20-generic. The update manager didn't know about it and didn't install it. O...

Re: Trouble with 4.15.0-20 kernel

If the issue is fixed for you, no need to "backshift" :)

I'm not sure why you need to upgrade elfutils and libelf-dev manually?

Re: Drivers issues with new kernel 4.15.0-20

Both issues (missing upstream dependency on linux-base 4.1 and support for the new kernel package naming convention in mintupdate) are being worked on right now. Please follow this thread: viewtopic.php?f=49&t=269028.

Re: Trouble with 4.15.0-20 kernel

Quick update on the situation: We're working on an update which should prevent both issues from happening. We'll be testing this update until tomorrow before releasing it. If you have system snapshots in place and you want to give us a hand, it is available at: https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdat...

Re: Trouble with 4.15.0-20 kernel

As JeremyB stated, this should workaround both issues:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-base linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-20-generic

Re: Trouble with 4.15.0-20 kernel

Hi, The issue illustrated by JeremyB is an issue in the Linux Mint update manager. Kernel package names changed upstream, starting with 4.15.. and the Update Manager has to adapt to that. This was fixed today in the git version, https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdate/files/1984979/mintupdate_5.3.4....

Re: What is Mint's current "official" recommendation about updates?

Above that there is the case, where a member of the dev team took the impudence to write in the public to insult me and no one of the officials felt the need to calm him down. Perhaps they had fear. I tell you: I don't. With this event the top of the iceberg has been reached. It lead to the result,...

Re: What is Mint's current "official" recommendation about updates?

For which purpose? To create some more for Clem's software vault? There are more reasons, why I will not do this, but they are not for public discussion (although even more serious). :? OK so in the meantime, we heard of some German translation issues... from a German user, but he won't fix ...

Re: After todays update-->initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart

I'll take this opportunity to recommend using Timeshift, the system snapshot tool. With system snapshots in place you can restore your OS to the previous restoration point, thus going back in time and reverting updates and/or changes to the system. This does not affect your home directory and person...

Re: After todays update-->initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart

@kmph: No, it won't hurt anything.. but you had Virtualbox (the app itself) installed, that would remove it as well.

No, Virtualbox is fine, only the virtualbox-guest-* packages are problematic.

Re: What to do if you can't login to Linux Mint 18.x

Thanks Xenopeek. Cosmo is right, you only need to remove the guest packages. I hope you don't mind, I'm editing your post to reflect that.
