Re: How To make custom links?

The above may work, depending on your file manager. Using ln from command line works always. Could you give us an example, mate? Hint: you can wait until someone searches the net for you (slow) > Linky < ... or you can read the man page and search the net all by yourself (much faster). :P

Re: [SOLVED] I lost a directory, twice!

FYI hard drives die when they are new sometimes. Usually, when they last more than a few weeks without bad sector count building up they last for years. Thus, I'd run smartctl long test on it and then look at bad sector count afterwards, also pending relocations count.

Re: [SOLVED] I lost a directory, twice!

Filesystems will be mounted read-only in case there is corruption or the "dirty bit" is set. You could remount read-write and ignore the issue - not a good idea, though. I'd certainly investigate why it is mounted read-only. It may hint there is an hardware issue - and this is something that will co...

Re: Mint sees no internal hard drive

fdisk will see only what kernel can access. If you have an NVMe device and kernel has no driver for it then it won't be seen and cannot be used. Will this device show up in lspci?

Re: Adding HDDs after Install

Hi AscLinux, I am never intentionally misleading anyone in this forum, just trying to help others, unlike your comments that provide no useful information on the topic and no solutions for the user's original post issues. "skoty" is now able to do what the original post was about and what I suggest...

Re: Adding HDDs after Install

Hi AscLinux, Do you have anything positive to contribute or are you just complaining? OK, tell me how would you stop some member with 7000+ posts misleading new members? When I first switched to Linux Mint and I had multiple computers some with MS Windows XP Pro, I could not read the Linux drive pa...

Re: Adding HDDs after Install

MS Windows computers cannot read or write to Linux filesystems (ext4) without installing special software AFAIK. So, if you have a mixed networking environment of Linux computers, MS Windows computer(s), Mac computers, tablets, smartphones, game consoles, smart TV's and Blu-Ray players, TV sticks, ...

Re: Adding HDDs after Install

Even more confusion. Why on earth you need a foreign filesystem if you want to share over SAMBA? :?: Just to make everything as difficult and unreliable as possible? Edit: maybe you do not understand how it works. A local filesystem like EXT4 <> Linux kernel <> SMBFS <> Remote Windows As you see Lin...

Re: Adding HDDs after Install

Not clear, do you dual boot and need your local Windows to access these drives or not? I assume yes, since you talk about FAT32?

You say you want to share these drives with remote Windows and then suddenly tell about FAT32, do you also want to share these drives locally?

Re: Linux and Floppy B drives?

I run Mint in a virtual machine. I added two [virtual] floppy drives and booted Mint. Sure enough, there were two new device nodes, /dev/fd0 and /dev/fd1. Owned by root:disk, meaning these are not accessible without elevated rights. So to use floppy disks you need to be root or you need to master so...

Re: Linux and Floppy B drives?

Don't confuse Mint with Linux. Linux is kernel and it has excellent floppy support, always had. The question is whether these features are enabled in Mint stock kernel.

Re: Trouble after Kernel Update

Kernel is not involved in localization. Something went wrong during your update, perhaps the the drive got full? You should run apt from CLI and do what it recommends.

This is a myth. https://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#Is_Wine_malware-compatible.3F I still say it is a myth. This Wiki goes into same category with goods that are sold all over the world, yet are banned in California because there is a slimmest chance they may cause cancer. They can't say Wine is immune and...

Re: [SOLVED] LM as NAS and Media Server?

I built mine from ground up. First, I wanted to keep all my precious data there, not only media. Got Supermicro server board. Added four drives in addition to OS drive, running RAIDZ-2 on those four. Using ECC memory, why not, some argue it complimentary with ZFS. Chose i3-4130T CPU, it is plenty fo...

Re: Foobar

This is a myth. Windows viruses use vulnerabilities in Windos OS to infect. Wine code is written from scratch and does not have these vulnerabilities. Actually, there was a test. They tried several viruses and the worst ones only managed to crash Wine. No infection.
