Re: 144 terabytes of RAM
It's actually Gb, not Tb, but that's still not to be sniffed at. And 72 cores Not Tb (terabars) or Gb (gigabars). These are case sensitive units, not words or names. Units B - byte bit - bit b - bar K - kelvin degree Prefixes T - tera G - giga M -mega k - killo So the units with prefixes are for ...

So who owns this directory?
Note, never ever run anything as root in your home directory, some applications may create new configurations with root ownership, denying your user write access.

Re: linux mint has changed my ext4 hard disk drive to read only
First, all file systems may set "the dirty bit", this is a flag telling it was not cleanly unmounted and may be corrupted. If this is the case you should check the integrity of file system and fix it if needed. Once the file system is clean you can mount it rw. The other factor you have to...

Re: Unallocated Space on Windows Drive
I would start from square one, clean slate. Back up all user data you care about from both operating systems and install LM using whole former C drive. Then, if you need W7 for anything you can set it up in a virtual machine so you have it if you need to run something Windows-only.

Re: Recommendations for a Image Clone Software
You say you want to back up your data. For this purpose I use rsnapshot. it uses hard links, so even frequent backups won't waste disk space. It is also very flexible, you can use it as an intelligent copy utility or you can use it to interact with [remote] rsync server(s).

You may have corrupted CMOS, I'd start with BIOS reset, there usually is a jumper on the mobo for this, or you can remove the battery for a minute.

Yes we know why. Because the system is protected from anything user might do, or a virus may do in user environment. Search the net for "why I should not run as root", this will bring up all answers.

Re: Cannot complete boot after unlocking disc, have to boot from recovery
Sounds like hard drive corruption, it may be caused by crash, but why it crashed? Perhaps the drive is failing? I'd run diagnostics on that drive before doing anything else.

Re: Static sound output
What kind of computer is this?
I'd boot with Mint live CD and see if sound works. This way you can determine if the problem is with hardware or your Mint installation.

You could put /var on USB drive. And you could create a swap file on USB drive if you need swap. You can move /var without re-installing.

Re: Saving Timeshift Snapshots to RAID Array
It seems to be an old problem. People have software RAID (mobo manufacturers advertise it as hardware RAID, while in actuality it is software fakeraid) and Timeshift won't write to /dev/mdX.
There seems to be a solution in Github, though.

Re: Mac os on vm with linux host
You may have better luck downloading a ready to use macOS virtual machine image, these can be found. I used one of those for some time, but there is no video acceleration, everything is painfully slow. Finally I gave in and a few years ago I bought an used Mac Mini for $180, it runs happily Monterey...

There is common misunderstanding, folks think only default device can be used. In actuality any input or output can be chosen at application level. Yup, it looks like Windows was installed in legacy mode using MS-DOS partition table and then Mint was added in UEFI mode. This may be fun to make it work like this, but it would be a nerdish solution ...

Re: Would you purchase a computer from a Linux system maker?
My desktop is the only box in the house which needs serious computing power, all others are for net browsing or headless servers. It makes alot sense for me to get some older hardware and tune their power consumption down for 7x24 usage. So the truth is I'm not out there shopping for newest hardware.
