Re: Account's password and Cyrillic alphabet
Thanks for replies. I did as you have advised: set up a numeric password. This device is not meant to be connected directly to the external network anyway, so a security risk of a password guessing or brute-force attack should not really be considered here. I also set up a hotkey left ctrl + left sh...

Account's password and Cyrillic alphabet
Hello, I am preparing a laptop for a girl who fled from Ukraine, so she can continue school remotely. As the computer is quite old, I decided to run it on Linux Mint Xfce and install/configure apps which she might need for school (Libre Office, Zoom, a browser with an adblock etc.). I installed the ...

Re: Using wget to download dangerous files
Thank you for your responses. I know, that the best idea is to stay clear of any malware, however, in my job, sometimes I have to deal with suspicious files and to perform basic analysis. I know and use VirusTotal and other well-known tools like that, but VT is good to verify whether the file is mal...

Using wget to download dangerous files
Hello, I need a method by which I would be able to securely download potentially malicious files from the Internet into my hard drive. Very often, that would be a pdf or docx file and I need a method to download it without opening or executing it. I thought, that wget might be a good solution. I'd j...

Mint on Fujitsu LifeBook E754
Hello, My old laptop died and I want to buy a new one. Of course, one of the most important thing for the new laptop is to be compatible with Linux Mint. The laptop I chose is Fujitsu LifeBook E754. There is very little information about this very model running under Linux. I also found a post on Tw...

Re: sha256sum and other sha2 generators give a different hash
I see. Thank you for your response. I didn't know that the echo command adds a new line automatically. I've tried to calculate the hash with printf and echo -n commands and now the output is the same as on these websites. $ echo -n "4321" | sha256sum fe2592b42a727e977f055947385b709cc82b16b...

sha256sum and other sha2 generators give a different hash
Hi Today I realized that the same input given into a command sha256sum and an online sha256 calculator gives a different output. For example: $ echo "4321" | sha256sum ff5a972ba33179c7ec67c73e00a362b629c489f9d7c86489644db2bcd8c62c61 While those websites http://www.xorbin.com/tools/sha256-h...

Re: Audiotrak Prodigy Cube or Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi HD on a Linux machine
So how can I check whether my computer does 44.1k to 48k resampling? I use Rhythmbox as my main music player and I have not seen such an option there.

I decided to buy Creative sound blaster X-Fi HD and it works out of the box. I just leave this info here as somebody might have a similar problem in the future.

Audiotrak Prodigy Cube or Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi HD on a Linux machine
Hi I think about buying myself an external audio card. Cards I'm considering are: Audiotrak Prodigy Cube and Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi HD (NOT the 5.1 version). The reason why I didn't just buy it is that I'm not sure whether it will work with my laptop running under Linux Mint 18.1 64bit. I just ...

Thank you for all your responses. When you really want a free Python course you could have a look here: http://fullcirclemagazine.org/downloads/ Starting in issue 27 the course starts. Download them all and start programming. I'll see it, thanks. I had a short adventure with Python in the past. I wa...

Becoming an advanced user of Linux - what to do next?
Hello I have been using Linux for nearly two years. During this time, I've been learning more and more about the system. I've read (or sometimes just skimmed) a few books about Linux and recently I finished the Introduction to Linux course by Linux Foundation. The course covered many topics such as:...

Re: Black screen after decrypt - help suggestions appreciated
My laptop (ASUS k50in) boots like that normally. After I hit a power button, it shows the maker's logo and then the screen goes black. This is the moment when I type my password to decrypt a harddrive. When the process of unlocking the disc takes place, the screen is still black. After unlocking is ...

Re: Level 1,2,3 updates-should I still be cautious
Nice feature, but to make it useful, you have to know that it exists :D Moreover, in a case when you cannot access Synaptics because your GUI does not work (like in this nvidia case) you won't be able to use this History option. Yeah, I know, there is for sure a text log file which keeps those infor...

Re: Level 1,2,3 updates-should I still be cautious
Actually, I believe that you should always be cautious (to some degree) while installing lv 1-3 patches. Two weeks ago there was an update of nvidia drivers which caused some users serious problems. Of course it may be quite difficult and time consuming to investigate every patch and look for possib...

Is there any possibility for you to launch cinnamon in fallback mode? Mine launched in this mode automatically, thanks to that I was able to launch synaptics and get rid of the faulty drivers.
