Re: Intel or AMD for Linux desktop

intel support is easier because intel directly contributes to the Linux kernel and their chips are supported out of the box with official open-source driver, whereas for AMD you basically need their binary drivers (there's an open-source community maintained driver that still needs proprietary firm...

Re: Intel or AMD for Linux desktop

With the latest Nvidia graphics cards, LM users can opt to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers to make use of advanced features. LM users cannot do the same for the latest AMD graphics cards because AMD has stopped supporting Linux since 2016, likely due to Linux's tiny world marketshare or lack...

Re: Intel or AMD for Linux desktop

Nvidia does give better performance; I love the fact that I can use opensource drivers with AMD though, don't you know what Torvalds told nvidia?

Nvidia has the best binary drivers, it's hard for the community to offer support with binary drivers.

Your gpu is old enough the current kernel should be OK, you could try manually installing the kernel I linked above, but nothing stands out to me

Re: Cinnamon crashes - fallback mode in LM 19

What gpu do you have?
What is the output of

Code: Select all

glxinfo | grep OpenGL
Can you run glxgears?

If you have an AMD gfx card, install https://github.com/M-Bab/linux-kernel-amdgpu-binaries and add

Code: Select all

amdgpu.dc=1
to your boot parameters

Re: What to do about my system freezing up?

What are your kernel parameters? Is it a ctate bug? intel_idle.max_cstate=0 turns them off entirely, but will have you CPU consuming a lot of power you might try processor.max_cstate=5 or something similar. Kernel parameter are set at boot in grub or in sudo nano /etc/default/grub my Ryzen was freez...

Re: Flatpaks v Snaps v Repos

Flapacks & Snaps are distro agnostic, they are sandboxes for security and they use there own dependencies. I prefer flatpaks- the do not leave as much garbage around after running. Some flatpak games require overrides to use gamepads

Code: Select all

flatpak override --device=all net.supertuxkart.SuperTuxKart
