Re: Can't re-enable wifi

Hi @JeremyB this looks really interesting, thank you. Could you explain a little about what these commands do please? I have looked them up though they seem rather abstract to me. I am keen to have a solution that I understand kept ready in my "useful commands" crib sheet kept locally on the compute...

Can't re-enable wifi

Hi I've been using Mint 18.1 successfully with Wifi for a while. Today I had to disable the wifi, I thought temporarily, using the toggle in the Network Manager Applet. After later rebooting I find that the toggle has disappeared. This basically means I can't connect wirelessly because I can't activ...

Re: How to share Lightning Calender with Android

Ok, the short question is actually just:
"How do I use the Lightning Calender on Linux Mint in conjunction with a phone using Android?"

Re: VCN server - working concept?

OK, thank you! I had completely forgotten the firewall! I've not found the firewall that assuring in terms of setting it up for RDP/VNC so I'm first going to test it with the firewall down completely. Am I right to understand that in this case with VNC4, or TightVNCserver/Vino, any of these that it ...

Java in Geany - Fully Qualified Classname

Hi The headline is that I don't know how to get Geany to automatically pick up the fully qualified classname from the project that I'm working on in order to run the project. I've installed Geany and am trying to import some java applications I had previously written elsewhere (Windows + Eclipse, th...

VCN server - working concept?

Hi I've been trying to set up a VCN link so that I can share a desktop between two PCs running Mint. The two PCs are on the same private LAN but in different physical locations so I'd like to be able to control one from the other to save walking backwards and forwards between them. 1. Previous succe...

How to share Lightning Calender with Android

Hi, I find this a very confusing topic as all the resources I have found so far seem to assume much more awareness of how it all fits together. So far, I have Thunderbird 52.9.1 running on Linux Mint 18.1. I have an Android phone (7.11). The main things I want to avoid are having to use any Microsof...

How do I actually get hold of LUKS or Veracrypt? Are they available in any repositories approved by linux Mint?

Avhi-browse and Itunes sevices

Hi I'm a newbie, I recently discovered the avahi-browse command and am wondering what it means. Specifically I ran avahi-browse -a on my linux mint machine on a domestic network and amongst the entries were these: + wlp2s0 IPv4 Canon MG5300 series _canon-bjnp1._tcp local + wlp2s0 IPv4 Canon MG5300 s...

Hi Cosmo and jglen490
Thank you both for patience to write each of your last responses, this clears up the concept of how these various things are related very well for me.

Ah ha, now I am learning something new, maybe. So, in that case how would one (and why, just an example) go about root access then, if not with sudo?

Re: Context for user and root passwords

Hi Cosmo and jglen490 Thanks for your replies. However I am still struggling a bit here. My own context is that I have to get my micro business accredited by the UKs national "Cyber Essentials" scheme. This appears to say that I shouldn't use the same password for multlpie accounts but omits to prov...

Context for user and root passwords

Hi 1. For a computer owned and used exclusively by one person, should the user and root passwords be the same or different? I've seen both recommended. 2. I installed Mint a while ago and can't recall what I did, i.e. whether I have one set or not, if I do I presume its the same as the user password...

Re: Battery percentage indicator - Mint 18 Cinnamon 64 bit

I've had one small step of progress: I did a live boot using Lubuntu and it doesn't have the main problem, it shows a seemingly working battery indicator that changes correctly from charging to on battery and shows a decreasing battery level with use. This means to me (as a relative beginner with no...

Re: How to backup & restore programs

OK, Once again thank you for a clearly written answer. There doesn't seem to be a vote-up button on this forum, or have I missed it? Lastly, just to see if my world-view matches yours: A) if I get some software from the Software Manager from a fresh install of Mint then I understand that the softwar...

Re: How to backup & restore programs

That's great, very clear, I have tried it out and the package listing in Aptik looks quite straightforward. Thank you. As an aside, I've seen a lot of apt-get commands though the working concept is a little vague to me. I'm assuming that, together with the PPA it provides access to arbitrary reposit...

Re: How to backup & restore programs

How can I get Aptik? It sounds like it does what I want, i.e. sorts out all my installed programs either side of an upgrade to Mint. I'm still quite new to Linux and a) cant make much sense of the link to Aptik and b) am uncomfortable installing things outside of the normal package manager. Thank you

Re: Charging, but indicator says on battery, Why ???

I've no solutions though it seems you are not alone, there seem plenty of symptoms like yours, with variations, either the system working and charging/discharging etc but outwardly behaving as if there is either no mains attached or no battery. I've got the latter symptom, if you skim this thread ht...

Re: List of approved notebooks for Linux Mint

There is a recent thread called "Everything worked just fine": https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=233952 As an aside it wouldn't be such a bad idea to have a sub-forum for people who are resolving installation issues on a per laptop model basis. The current Hardware support place is g...
