Re: Good File Manager For Large Transfers?

Thanks. I haven't got with it yet, have I? When someone tells me about some app I should 'man' it on the terminal and learn something about it. I just been doing that with rsync and it has a bewildering array of options. But I didn't see one to exclude a particular directory (and subdirs below it) f...

Is A Mint Install Specific to That machine?

A windows installation is specific to a machine. YOu can't take a windows system disk and put it on another machine and expect it to work. Is Linux Mint the same? For my install is running on an old Asus 8NSLI board and it has started giving warnings about the cpu fan and overheating. I've seen that...

Re: Good File Manager For Large Transfers?

How do I use it to address the whole fileset that I want? I've been doing a drag and drop of a highlighted file lis...

How Did I Break This Nemo Transfer?

I had nemo transferring some 500,000 files. From many directories and sub directories. Essentially a transfer of a whole hard drive. It's been going all day because it kept stopping and waiting for me to give it the go ahead and skip a file it couldn't transfer. And I noticed a curious thing. While ...

Good File Manager For Large Transfers?

I have some 500G of files need transferring and I set nemo to the job and it isn't too good for the purpose. It keeps stopping at various strange files - I don't know what they are but they often have names that are just long strings of numbers - and it won't allow me to 'skip for all such files' or...

Re: Can I Clone My System Disk - And Use it As System?

right now I've got a 1T system disk and a 2T I cloned from a bad drive and a new blank 2T.

I plan to put the data on the new 2T, just like you say.

Make the other 2T a system disk - I think it is good to have a spacious system disk.

And I don't know what to do with the 1T.

How To Drag and Drop From Home To File System?

I want to copy a few thousand files from a directory in my 'Home' directory tree to a directory in the 'Files' tree (under /mnt). On the GUI I can only seem to get Home up on the left pane and Files on the right - and when I click on a directory on the left, in the Home tree, it immediately opens up...

Re: Can I Clone My System Disk - And Use it As System?

Well I'm very happy to go along with your suggestion. No false pride here. I didn't even know there was a Clonezilla. And i am a novice alright. So if I clone my 1T system drive onto a new 2T drive - using Clonezilla - that can be done? - and the 2T drive now becomes a new system drive and I can pul...

Can I Clone My System Disk - And Use it As System?

My system disk is too small - on 1T. If I get a new 2T and clone the system onto it could i then use that 2T as the system disk? It would boot from it if I hang it off the right SATA cable? Or if that won't work what's the best way to increase the size of your system disk? Or is it perhaps better or...

Re: How To Format 'No Media' HDD?

thanks for that. But it doesn't show up in gparted and it doesn't show in lsblk - so you think I should run the hdparm with the dev that it should have, that it used to have, even though it's missing on listings now ( /dev/sdb) ? I am ignorant of hdparm and don't know if it could do damage used like...

How To Format 'No Media' HDD?

I have a hdd in my linuxmint machine that was a win10 system disk that crashed. It could not be seen by windows machines any more. I put it in the Mint machine where it could be seen but could not be mounted. So I cloned it with superclone. And got my data off that clone. So now to deal with the bad...

Re: Best Way To Copy All Files One Type From Whole Drive?

Thanks for the help.

Finished up doing it like this:

dave@linuxMint ~ $ find / -iname "*.pdf" -exec cp "{}" ~/rescuedpdf \;

It has worked and found and copied over 800 files. Trouble is the find itself, without the copy, finds more than 23,000.

But getting close.

maybe. :)

Re: How Do I Make A Mounted Disk Appear In Files?

I am trying to access sdc4. I can see it and copy files from it in terminal. It just doesn't show in the file manager. dave@linuxMint ~ $ cat /etc/fstab # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a # device; this may be used with UUID...

How Do I Make A Mounted Disk Appear In Files?

I have a disk mounted read only and I can list its contents from terminal. But it doesn't appear in the Files gui. I wonder why and what I can do about it? As explanation of what I"m trying to do: that disk is a clone of an unmountable disk. Trying to recover data. Cloned so well it, too, turned out...
