Re: Black desktop and no icons all the rest works perfectly

First of all thanks tovian for your reply and apologies for not replying soon but was away for work. I'm not the expert but I think that is a good possibility. Something you can try... Pull your mouse down to the bottom of your (blank) screen. It may be (hopefully) pointing in the panel area even if...

Re: Black desktop and no icons all the rest works perfectly

Besides, a friend suggests it may be something regarding Plasma activities. That I could have created a new desktop like that.
I tried to delete every activity there is, but to no avail.

Re: Black desktop and no icons all the rest works perfectly

Tried it, absolutely no effect.
I also tried switching sessions (ctrl+alt+f4-5-6-etc), no effect apart from a textual login coming up in a couple of sessions -didn't enter it- and a bunch of error messages in another.

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

So sorry to hear that sichenia, and no wonder you're fed up! I worry sometimes about how things keep changing overall, and not always for the best, but, after looking around and trying many distros, the conclusion I came to is that Mint really is the best of the bunch ... stable and reliable, and i...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Well, I've been a linux user for over a decade and now let me tell you that I'm extremely disappointed. To me KDE is simply ESSENTIAL. And I love the KDE 3.5 one!! Let me explain: I have eyesight problems. I need to customize fonts and colors and every tiny aspect of the desktop appearance not to fe...

Black desktop and no icons all the rest works perfectly

Hi, I have Mint 17.3 and KDE. Tonight I was working as usual when I pressed a couple of keys and I must have triggered a shortcut of some kind. The desktop suddenly became black and with no icons, the taskbar remained but with no icons of the programs that were open at the moment, as if there were n...

Re: Palemoon installation from repository impossible

Thanks for the tip! I had completely missed that.
I added it, but I still get the unresolved dependencies error message (save from the ffmpeg one, that has gone away)

I don't see any.
The links are here http://linux.palemoon.org/ and don't differentiate between ubuntu and xubuntu... do you know the correct repo address I should use?

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

The new kernel won't work on my machine as explained here https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=208&t=261394&p=1425547#p1425547 I hope the newer ones will fix the problem, right now after boot I get a black screen. My friend says it's because now the video options are invoked not by X directl...

Re: [SOLVED] Mint 17.3 Cinammon Crash after kernel upgrade K4.4.0-109(132)

Same here. Mint 17.3 and same problem. Called a friend who is a programmer to ask for his help and he tries all these solutions and more, and concluded that there is no way to solve the problem until a new kernel comes up. The best compromise he could get was a 640x480 resolution that couldn't be ch...

[SOLVED] Palemoon installation from repository impossible

Hi everyone. I've been trying to install Palemoon for a while from the update manager, but to no avail. I have Mint 17.3 I added the repo: deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/stevenpusser/xUbuntu_17.04/ / as suggested on the PM website. I do see Palemoon among the available packages ...

Re: Firefox no audio--but look at all the multiple processes

Just in case you didn't know, Pale Moon is not affected by Meltdown and Spectre: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=17928 I tried to use it but it crashes since I use the Oxygen theme. I've read that with oxygen-gtk2-1.4.6.1 Palemoon works, but it isn't in the repos and I can't figure o...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

I too had issues with the 4.4 kernel and run 17.3. On this thread viewtopic.php?f=46&t=261091&p=1410531#p1410531 they suggested to use kernel 3.13 instead

Re: Kernel upgrade problem

You should remove kernel 4.4 and install kernel 3.13. Both are LTS kernels but the latter is more compatible with older computers and LM 17.x. My system is a 64bit one. I bought it a few months ago. Right now I have a 3.19 kernel, is it wise to go backwards with 3.13? I'm afraid it could mess other...

Kernel upgrade problem

Hi everybody. I run Mint 17.3 with KDE and use these kernel packages linux-kernel-generic-3.19.0-32 linux-image-3.19.0-32.37~14.04 linux-image-extra-3.19.0-32-generic I don't know if my problem belongs better to this section or in the 'software' one. Anyway: because of the Intel vulnerability issue ...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

...you really shouldn't be wary of such...i'd personally try the 4.4.x one, or else, the 3.13.x. But that's purely subjective, whatever out of the two works better for you. And in any case, if for some reason something isn't working correctly afterwards, people around will help... Thanks for the ad...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

There's no mention for 3.19.x on Canonical's site. Unless something changes, only the kernel versions mentioned there are the ones that will be patched. Hm. As I said, I'm pretty wary of touching the kernel... Since I have to patch this and since I run Mint 17.3 what do you suggest as best course o...
