Re: Blank screen with fn1-fn8 consoles.

Does anyone have an ssd (nvme) card configured as root? If so, what is your boot setup? I'm wondering if grub doesn't know how to handle an nvme type ssd.
Thanks for any info.
Best regards,
BobG.

Blank screen with fn1-fn8 consoles.

Hi all, I just recently installed my first ssd card which is super fast. I then reinstalled Mint 19.1. I still use my /dev/sda hard drive for grub bootload but the ssd serves as the '/' root directory. Bootup now shows a completely blank screen until the Xwindow login screen appears. There are no gr...

Re: Nice Gambas app but nowhere to post it

Thank you all for your interest in my little project. First, about Gambas, the ide is awesome but the documentation is a bit out of date. Drag and Drop is king in this ide. Be sure to read the tooltips when hovering the pointer over an icon. I would recommend to start with a qt environment selected ...

Nice Gambas app but nowhere to post it

My Wife wanted a dvd backup program and I wanted to learn Gambas So I wrote a nice GUI app that uses Gambas with qt5. I thought I'd share so I tried to register with a couple of Gambas forums. One forum called me a spammer and refused my registration, another sent an email to certify me but clicking...

SOLVED: Lost local network share after upgrade 18.3 to 19.1

The last piece of the puzzle was UFW (firewall service) was blocking access. I used gufw to add rules to allow access by samba. First attempt was just to open it up to verify that fixed access. Then, I needed to shut it down in order to set our local IPs to a fixed IP since anyone could access my wi...

Re: Lost local network share after upgrade 18.3 to 19.1

Thank you altair4 for your generous help. I keep inching closer but still not quite there. My system now sees my host and the shared file in a file browser under the 'Browse Network' menu. My wife's system see my host but not the shared file. It gets a message that the connection timed out. I've rec...

Re: Lost local network share after upgrade 18.3 to 19.1

Up to now, My attention has been on getting 'share' working under nfs just because it is the unix way of doing things. From running your suggested tests, I see that samba is not set up properly. As a last resort, I would use samba if there was no way to share under nfs although it's not my preferenc...

Re: Lost local network share after upgrade 18.3 to 19.1

@altair4, Wonderful! Thank you for your very knowledgable help. Now I am halfway home. Both systems now see the other. I found avahi was not running on my 19.1 desktop. I also created the suggested avahi/samba file on the 18.3 laptop. Then I rebooted both systems. It does not appear that I need to d...

SOLVED: Lost local network share after upgrade 18.3 to 19.1

Hi All, My desktop is connected to a hub along with my wife's laptop (LinuxMint 18.3). We have used file sharing through samba for a long time. I recently upgraded my destop from LinuxMint 18.3 to LinuxMint 19.1 as part of restructuring my disk partitions. I have since been unable to get sharing goi...

Looking for anaconda

I went looking for the 'Anaconda' software and neither 'Synaptic' nor 'aptitude' ever heard of it. Still, a search for Anaconda on the forum shows it in use recently. What am I missing? I really don't like using repos outside the official distro unless absolutely unavoidable.

Best regards,
Bob G.

Re: Font turns skinny/tiny in browser.

Perhaps a simpler solution with too small text in Firefox is to simply do 'ctrl - +' This should in most cases expand the entire page, usually including graphics images. It may make it necesary to scroll side to side to see the whole page but it should make everything more readable. One thing that e...

Re: Virus in a winetricks steam installer

It's my understanding that you need to be online to Steam's website to use Steam Play. I am uncomfortable with any game that requires being online but has nothing to do with online play. The game I wanted to play is 'Banished' which is a non-violent survival and colonization building game. There was...

Re: Virus in a winetricks steam installer

Begs a question - I guess there's a use case for installing Win Steam via Wine to access Windows only Steam games but why would you ever install a Win browser via Wine when there are native Linux versions of every browser other than the MS ones? Steam won't let you download a Windows game using a L...

Virus in a winetricks steam installer

Hi All, Just for the sake of being informed, my clamav anti-virus software just notified me of the presence of the Sality virus on my system. It was in the Wine Steam installer from winetricks. It had infected the Wine (32bit version) Steam-uninstaller and the Wine version of Firefox. Clamav identif...

lxc container mystery

Hi All, At some point in the past I seem to have acquired a container setup in some automatic way. If I type a CLI command; "lxc list" it shows a container named 'joint-gazelle'. I believe this is a part of containerizing the Firefox browser such that when Firefox is closed, its temporary container ...

Re: Is there a way to identify processes using memory?

Silly me  I actually ran top and never thought to look at the memory usages. I was just looking to see what processes were dominant and if any were flakey. I didn't know about htop which is clearly better for some uses.

Many thanks and best regards,
Bob G.

SOLVED: Is there a way to identify processes using memory?

I notice that after some browser sessions, my memory bar-graph shows unusually high memory usage. Even after the browser closes it does not go back to a normal usage. I would like to identify (if possible) what processes are using memory and how much each one is using. I've searched the man pages fo...

Thanks. That got me past this hurdle. Now it's complaining that I don't have 32bit headers for the Xwindow system  https://wiki.winehq.org/Building_Wine Maybe that has the clues you need. Been there done that. but thanks anyway. Interestingly, while adding new files needed to configure the re...

Re: Wine regression testing

Any suggestions? BTW, an attempt to search this forum for 'gcc 32bit' returned a rejection for having too common search terms. "compile 32bit' returned some stuff, none of it useful. The forum search is very weak and doesn't like 3-letter words. Try this google search instead. Thanks. That got me p...
