Why do PPAs recommend ppa-purge?

Especially in the case of graphics drivers, ppa-purge has never worked. The only resolution it's ever given is remove half the system when used on any ppa that upgrades system packages. Yet time and time again I see: "Install ppa-purge and just run it against the ppa" What has worked is ma...

Re: FYI. Nvidia 340 is broken

I had tried updating to a 5.4 kernel first.

Just tried again using 5.4.0-62 and no go.

FYI. Nvidia 340 is broken

This is the latest version my card will support. GPU decoding and most of everything else failed as soon as I updated the kernel. It seems that canonical's package doesn't use DKMS. The fix lay in using an almost unknown PPA that I couldn't even search up on ddg or google. sudo add-apt-repository pp...

Re: MintUpgrade wants me to remove DNScrypt?!

Well, pihole and DOH might be exclusive unless you configure DOH to connect to the pihole. At that point it resolves however you set it.. encrypted or not. The dnscrypt in 18.0.4 (and 20 :D ) is mad outdated, but new ones are available. The hangup there is who's servers do you trust. I don't trust m...

MintUpgrade wants me to remove DNScrypt?!

Wanted to try Mint 20 on a machine I don't often use. The process to upgrade from 18->19->19.3 was relatively painless so why not. *First problem, it wants me to make a snapshot but Ok, we can just set up timeshift and ignore it. *Second problem - Please disable these PPA. Wait, I thought this was o...

Re: Override EDID on AMDGPU?

I found a solution.

purge cryptsetup and cryptsetup-bin from your system. For some reason they block edid. After I did that the firmware was loaded correctly and my overrides work.

Re: Recommend GPU non gamer for older system

I bought an RX480 for about $80 after my 280x had poor linux support. I too have a phenom. The polaris chipset has good driver support and you can do dxvk and other wine stuff.

Maybe on the nvidia side you have to worry about EFI support but not here.

[solved] Override EDID on AMDGPU?

My monitor defaults to YCbCr and I'd like to use RGB4:4:4. On AMDgpu the only way to do that is to edit the EDID. Cool beans. Basically I can follow this guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/8bwul6/how_to_switch_the_pixel_format_for_amdgpu_on_linux/ So I copied the edid to edid.bin and chang...

Offline install of snap packages?

Is it possible to download .snap packages from somewhere else and manually install them with snapd? I don't want it connecting to the internet or auto updating.
I notice uApp Explorer is gone, is there something else like it or an alternative snap client?

Re: [solved] Nemo - Open as root for files

Thanks! I went with the actions, I may try some of the others but the edit is working right now.

Still wouldn't mind run as admin but I'm usually doing that stuff from the terminal anyways.

[solved] Nemo - Open as root for files

On nemo 4.x is it possible to open files as root, not just folders? i.e I want to edit something in /etc/ I want to open just that file instead of having to open the entire folder. Or maybe I want to run a script as root without dropping to the terminal. I found some old python extension for nemo <3...

Intel Rapid Start never starts

I have a thinkpad X250 on Mint 19.2 Mate. Set up a 2nd SSD with IRST partition using gparted. Bios is configured to deep sleep after 3 hours. The partition is 9gb and I have 8gb of ram. After 3 hours my system powers off; everything seems good so far. When I turn the computer back on, the bios boots...

Re: Screen flickers when changing to kernels above 4.15

I understand the need to want a higher refresh rate. Coming from the CRT world, I could see 60hz refreshing. On LCDs its not noticeable. The newer kernels above 4.15 implemented AMD driver features for newer cards and AMDGPU. That's why I said to start disabling things like power managment or specif...

Re: Can't login after update

Yes, just no clue what's breaking. Which is why it would be better to find the error. sudo apt reinstall cinnamon-desktop-environment lightdm that's if you're on cinnamon and not mate or XFCE you probably made a snapshot with timeshift: https://itsfoss.com/backup-restore-linux-timeshift/ TLDR: boot ...

Re: Can't login after update

that is weird. no syslog, no journal. only other place to look is at lightdm logs. there definitely should be some because I'm trying like hell to turn them down to save my ssd. If there is nothing and no error, you're probably reinstalling desktop environment at the least. I would say recovery effo...

Re: Can't login after update

Did you make this log after you tried to log in? Or when you switched terminals. It didn't have any errors, just weird that you have synaptics and libinput together. Look at xorg.0.log.old and syslog too. You can also boot up, try to login then dump journalctl to a file from a terminal. journalctl >...

Re: Can't login after update

Probably easier to do this from the live CD.

Copy and post /var/log/xorg.0.log

Re: Can't login after update

Can you log into any terminals like CTRL-ALT-F1, F2, F3, etc?

I would look at xorg log file. Something happened to your window manager.
