Re: Turning Off CPU Idle Setting and Enable Passive Setting

@Mute Ant Thank you for your response. Sorry I have not responded sooner I have been pulled into many other things. When I say CPUs make noise, you know what mean, noise is generated with the components + power. That is like saying fans are completely silent, until you add power to them :D I am not ...

Re: Firefox - Download Windows Software But Detects Linux OS

@kreemoweet Thank you for your response. Yeah, "User Agent String" was not looked for in any of my keyword searches, I feel so stupid because this was so obvious :D Honestly, I was not even thinking of an addon as being a solution for this, this was very helpful. I looked this up and as you mention ...

Firefox - Download Windows Software But Detects Linux OS

In the past I was able to search for this, but kind of hard thing to word in order to get the proper results. When using Linux Mint and Firefox, on occasion I need to download software for Windows 7. Certain websites automatically will detect my Linux Mint OS and automatically offer the Debian versi...

Turning Off CPU Idle Setting and Enable Passive Setting

I have a labtop with an Intel CPU that produces terrible high pitch noises (sounds like morse code) (I know some will comment, CPUs don't make noise, and to that I say.... yes sometimes they do) I tested this out on Linux Mint and also with Windows 7 and the noise is generated with both OSs. I found...

Re: Linux Antivirus For Scanning Windows Software

@phd21 Needless to say, there are many good posts on this topic in this forum already, if you search for them. Hey, hey, hey no need to live up to the acronym your name suggests :D Thank you for your post. I will have to read that link a little more, just skimmed it. My main confusion / concern is t...

Linux Antivirus For Scanning Windows Software

Hello everyone, Kind of a foolish question that I think I already know the answer too, but... Is there such a thing as free antivirus software, that installs into Linux Mint, that can scan downloaded Windows based files for viruses / malware / etc.? Again, I think I know the answer. :D I guess my ne...

Re: PCI Express X16 Gen 2 - Compatible SSD

@catweazel Thank you for your response, that is crazy, because the next day after posting I found that exact video you reference. Was glad to see that he was pluging into the same kind of slot that I have on my motherboard. Also crazy that the Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 250GB SSD was my product of cho...

Re: Setting To Lower CPU Performance Before Having To Increase Fan Speed

@sebastjava
Thank you for your response, I looked through my taskbar "applets" list and I unfortunately don't see anything like this in Cinnamon. The only thing I see is a "Power Manager" but this applet only show a couple of options of how to show your laptop battery icon / charged % status.

PCI Express X16 Gen 2 - Compatible SSD

Please Help! I am looking for some advice on PCIe SSD cards, I tried researching them but can see that they have become yet another very confusing topic of discussion. I have one slot available on my motherboard and it is a PCI Express X16 Gen 2 and I have some questions about it that I was hoping s...

Re: Setting To Lower CPU Performance Before Having To Increase Fan Speed

@KBD47 Thank you for the response, it looks like it might be similar, I am not quite sure, it mentions it can cut the frequency of the CPU which I believe is the same as "underclocking" to some degree, but it does not say on this page if there is a setting to underclock the performance of the CPU in...

Setting To Lower CPU Performance Before Having To Increase Fan Speed

Doubt something like this would be added, but in Windows 7 and I would imagine other versions, there is an option/setting in the "Power Options" that is called "System Cooling Policy" which you can set to "passive" or "active". What this settting does is allows the user to be able to choose between ...

Re: Ability To Choose Which Programs Get Installed During Installlation

Thank You for your response, I apologize I did not realize this was mentioned before. If this is not a desired feature to be added to Linux Mint that is fine, but it could be implemented into the installation without creating more screens (by screens I mean moments where user have to click a "next" ...

Ability To Choose Which Programs Get Installed During Installlation

Hello Everyone, Would be nice to be able to choose what programs get installed during the installation of Linux Mint. It is obviously nice that Linux Mint provides an assortment of programs, but not every user is going to want/need them all. The option to be able to choose would be a nice feature to...

GUI Based Driver Editor (Like Device Manager In Windows)

Hello Everyone, Would be nice to have a GUi based driver editing window that could allow users the ability to enable / disable what hardware is used. Similar to the "Device Manager" found in Windows OS. Sometimes users may not want certain hardware to be detected or used. Also for example if you hav...

Re: How To Disable NVidia Graphics and Use Intel Graphics

@catweazel Thank You for your response. So I would have to install NVidia proprietary driver in order to disable the NVidia driver? There isn't a way to do this through Linux Mint itself? (I will start off by saying that I am obviously not an experienced user of any LInux) but I have so much difficu...

How To Disable NVidia Graphics and Use Intel Graphics

Hello Everyone, Say you have a labtop that has a 3rd party graphics chip, such as NVidia or ATI (in my case NVidia). I installed Linux Mint 18.1, and have installed no 3rd party graphics drivers, so whatever Linux Mint drivers it has built into it are the ones that it installed. (I would like to kee...

Re: Determining Version Of eSATA Port

@greerd Thank you for your response. That is what I read, and also experienced, that USB3 starts out rather fast and then its performance begins to taper down to only a couple of megabytes per second. USB3 just seems to offer a little more convenience and tends to just be a little more "universal" :...

Re: Determining Version Of eSATA Port

@rene Thank You so much for your response. I ran that command, and it turns out that I have a 3Gbps port, oddly enough I thought I only had 3 ports but it says I have 4. I figured that eSata was dead, but something in my head keeps making me consider it, probably just because when using SATA interna...

Determining Version Of eSATA Port

Hello Everyone, I have been back and forth on my decision of going with eSATA or USB3 for data transfer. At this point it appears that most things I have read are pointing to USB3 being the better choice. eSATA appears to be a very mysterious port, it also appears to be another confusing mis-labeled...
