Re: WD My Passport not recognized

I felt the same way a few pages back too but knowing his situation i.e. not his disk. I knew taking it out of the enclosure was a last resort and maybe not possible, and data recovery companies are something I see as useless for me on a personal level. They are good for rich companies that have dat...

Re: WD My Passport not recognized

I had an old big (in physical size as well as 3TB) WD Passport & it started to act up when I tried to access data on it. The data was mostly TV shows & they, randomly, wouldn't open at all, would open & have issues while being played, or take a huge amount of time to get to a position to play. At f...

by sgtor » Wed May 22, 2019 2:01 pm You seem to be eager to learn on your own and I can't fault you for that but none of this extra info is needed nor is it useful. Re: WD My Passport not recognized

I too think the drive is dead but somehow I really wanted it to work out well for him so I'm pretty much grasping at straws. Your post gives me an idea though for another command that I didn't think of before. Helmar try one last command before giving up on it. sudo apt install testdisk && sudo tes...

Re: WD My Passport not recognized

Give this a try sudo smartctl -d scsi /dev/sdb Firstly, I tried this. Apparently worked but it got stuck with no results for more than a minute. I've wanted to ask a question about this drive but didn't bother because the answer seemed obvious but what is the history of the drive? Is it brand new? ...

I believe SuperSpeed is a feature from the enclosere/hdd and xchi is a hardware controller that manages USB devices.
I also do. My question is that it says to reset the device using hxci_hcd. How do I do that?

Re: WD My Passport not recognized

Hi helmar, FYI: The "smartctl" program is part of the "smartmontools" which is in your Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM). I would use the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" and install related packages like "gsmartcontrol" which is a desktop app. OR use this console terminal command....

Re: WD My Passport not recognized

Sorry that was my mistake, I forgot smartctl had to be installed. So it does indeed look like that drive is bad if that is the output of smartctl. All you can do now is try a different usb port but I really doubt that will work. Looks like a bad drive. I mean there is a remote chance that when you ...

Re: WD My Passport not recognized

Just post the output of one more thing if you don't mind, I'm really just curious to see what outcome will be. I do realize most usb drives don't have smart info but even so there is usually some useful information when you do this. sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdb Here is the output of smartctl command.....

Re: WD My Passport not recognized

Go to (Update Manager) and go to (Software sources) There should be a option with (Universe) on the right of the text. Toggle the box (On) and click confirm. Try to install it again. No, there isn't. Re: WD My Passport not recognized

The dmesg output isn't showing anything about a bad cable anymore so it looks like the new cable was needed. So now I would try to see it in gparted again. or lsblk or sudo fdisk -l In that dmesg output it's assigned to /dev/sdb so look for sdb If fdisk finds it look to see what the "TYPE" is. If i...

Re: WD My Passport not recognized

If it is a windows based partition (NTFS/FAT32) then try this command in a WINDOWS Command Prompt as Admin. chkdsk E: /f /r /x Replace E with the drive letter that windows shows in the disk management software. This should be the most elementary solution but obviously, Windows doesn't assign a lett...

Okay. So I guess there is no other solution for me but trying another cable or buying this USB tester? That USB tester looks like it should be in everyone's toolbox, gonna have to get me one of those!
It is pretty awesome. It speeds up troubleshooting pretty nicely.
