Re: Will give Linux another few years :-(

Xfce takes a little more time to configure than Cinnamon or Mate. You can check these out too.

As for dependencies: you won't install any of them twice. This saves disk space, and each program can take up even smaller space. They don't have to install the very same dependency every time.

Re: An income?

Hi wutsinterweb, It's also worth mentioning that GNU/Linux system admins also have great responsibilities. They can't really make mistakes, I guess. I'm about to become a (mechanical) engineer. I've met another mech. engineer (HVAC) who could buy just about any car from the money he has paid as comp...

It would take space on your hard drive anyways in a .vdi (virtual disk image) file. Btw VirtualBox can start another OS on the hard drive.

Re: Linux Ultimate Edition 5.4

I ran all three commands and nothing happened. I typed in the commands as follows: lsmod | grep 8168, etc. Thanks. Then it seems you don't have the driver you need... If I'm right. You don't see any wifi networks, do you? If you can't see any, then it's quite sure this is a problem. Here's some inf...

Re: Linux Ultimate Edition 5.4

Oh, sorry. :) Sure. A driver is a program that tells the OS how to use a certain part of your computer. It's like when a little boy gets a bicycle, he can't ride it yet (bicycle = part of computer, ability to use bicycle = driver). He needs to learn to use it. The question is: can your computer use ...

Re: Linux mint unable to mount my external hard drive

Please, plug in your hard drive then post the outputs of the following terminal commands (in code brackets): lsblk lsusb inxi -Fxz cat /etc/fstab and give the exact type of the HDD. Please, also open Gparted and make a screenshot of it, then upload it to an image sharing platform and copy the url he...

Re: Best way to Backup and Restore Mint and Data

Thanks for your responses. I am going to look into all of those apps. I want to be able to compress and encrypt the backup to external usb drive. (preferably with incremental backup) I don't think any of the backup apps support this. Is there an easy way to do this? As far as I know, incremental ba...

Re: Newbie Forum Sticky Post (Please Read)

IMO, bottom line, if you aren't willing to do research, Linux isn't for you. You just are not going to find one site with everything nicely organized. True, one will need to search on their own sooner or later. The sooner they learn that, the better. But, indeed, it would be really discouraging to ...

Re: 2600 pictures have disappeared from a folder!!!

You can further investigate with baobab (also known as Disk Usage Utility). 2600 images take up a lot of space. They can't simply hide... Look around the folders with baobab and tell us more. What is the source directory and what is the destination directory? Also, there's a program called testdisk ...

Re: Severe delay noticed while running backup copy

Ext file systems are journaling file systems. Maybe the metadata that is connected to that 21.5 Gb file became really big... Maybe there is something related to copying to a different file system (fat or vfat). Maybe you are better off splitting that large file into smaller chunks and copy the small...

Re: White Desktop

Another thing you can try is to rename the .cinnamon folder to .cinnamon.backup. That way you have to set everything from 0 again as Cinnamon won't find its config folder... This sometimes works with Firefox. As I know, installing and changing DEs is not really supported in Mint. I hope you will be ...

Re: White Desktop

No. I looked it up, it's .cinnamon in your home folder. Run sudo chown -R yourusername ~/.cinnamon If it's still not working, you can also run: sudo chown -R yourusername $HOME this will reset all file ownership in your home folder. The first does that only for .cinnamon. Restarting Cinnamon can be ...

Re: White Desktop

Hi Hipe, welcome to the Mint forum! :) Your issue sounds like a permission problem. Locate your cinnamon settings folder, it will be in the hidden folder .config that is in your home folder (ctrl-H might show hidden things in Nemo)... Note its name then run: Try running: sudo chown -R yourusername ~...

I forgot this last time: welcome to the Mint forum! :) I can't really see what's going wrong in the logs. There are error messages in journalctl log, but you kept using your machine so those are not the errors we are trying to solve here. The best would be to see a log just after the crash. Can you ...

Re: Cyber attack

Your Linux OS is not vulnerable to WannaCry regardless of the number of Windows PCs on the network, as I know WannaCry is not a Linux ransomware. Although I guess it's not wise to think that GNU/Linux is unbreakable. Maybe Wine or mono increases the chance of a Windows virus actually working on GNU/...

Please post some more info: inxi -Fxz Try to run dmesg -w and journalctl after a crash and past the log here in code brackets. As for Cinnamon: Mate is more stable.
