Re: Which is the best Linux distro for a 5 year old pc ?
Hmmm, kinda hard to know which is the 'best' distro for your PC - expect that would be the one that meets your requirements. You could have a look at antiX, there is a mid-sized edition of approx 340MB - currently testing M11 version, see forums under announcements. There is a Puppy based on Slackwa...

Re: Which version for 128 mb ram?
This might be interesting. Appears to be targeted at low ram machines.

Re: Mint Debian: My take so far
Just on the wifi thing, I have a Belkin card with Ralink rt2561s and an SMC branded one with Atheros AR2314 that both seem to work with all the live CDs I try which supply wireless firmware, as most do. However it can be a pain trying to determine what chip is actually in a card as the Kamakuza123 m...

Re: Live Disc wont Run
Kinda hard to know why yr machine won't work with this, but on the basis of the symptoms it sounds like some sort of fresh Xorg hell, probably involving the infernal kernel modesetting, aka KMS. One expedient might be to swap out the video card (you *do* have a couple of spare ones in a cupboard, ri...

Re: LMDE Dual-Monitor Problem (Intel)
Don't wish to ruin your day, but you might just have to live with this. The 852/855 is not one of Intel's best efforts and seems to be the target of a concerted campaign by the Xorg people and the writers of Intel drivers to make life painful for people who want to use it under Linux. Aside from tha...

LM9 Xfce - problem mounting usb volume
Yesterday ran Mint 9 Xfce for the first time. I connected a laptop drive via a USB/IDE adaptor. This hardware works with other distros, ie is recognised and is able to be mounted. With Xfce Mint however, the attached drive is recognised and seen as /dev/sdb1 according to dmesg. But it does not show ...

Re: Mint 9 frozen on screensaver
Welcome to the wonderful world of a frozen X Window session. I have had this happen with Mint on a laptop with Intel video. As near as I can tell, it's probably a bug to do with video drivers. I would say your best hope is to identify the offending screensaver(s), and remove it or them from the list...

Re: Linux Mint 9 "Isadora" RC released!
Suspend failures with ThinkPads @ bennachie Hi, thanks for responding re suspend success with your portables. I confess I haven't done much homework on this. The beast called acpi is in the frame I think. A question did occur to me; do you use any hardware buttons on your machine to evoke the suspen...

Re: Linux Mint 9 "Isadora" RC released! - live suspend
Afraid I haven´t tried the RC for Isadora, but I did just want to drop in 2 cents worth on a little problem I find annoying. I tend to use live CDs much of the time, commonly with a couple of ThinkPad laptops. I often have a web browsing session and then want to take away some pages in a browser for...

live cd v8 - screensaver causing freeze on Intel video?
Hi there, Good work with fluxbox edition, enjoying it. However I have had a glitch while using the live CD. While the screensaver is active my machine freezes and stops responding to keyboard input. The 'puter is a ThinkPad R51 with Intel 82852/82855 integrated video. Haven't found a way of escaping...

Re: Linux Mint 7 "Gloria" Fluxbox CE Wishlist & Discussion
Just touching on the question of Network Manager vs wicd, put me down as a vote for wicd. What I find is that for my purposes (wifi with or without encryption) wicd always seems to work, whereas there are sometimes problems with NM. I find for example that NM will sometimes dash off and select any o...

Re: Linux Mint 7 "Gloria" Fluxbox CE Wishlist & Discussion
Having run Mint 6 fluxbox on a ThinkPad Z60m for a day or so, I notice there doesn't seem to be any sleeping going on, or at least screen dimming. The screen is always on. I haven't looked into this closely, perhaps there are some settings for energy saving or the like that I have missed? Otherwise ...

Re: no sound output LM5&6 fluxbox with cs46xx
Call this resolved, if not solved. Eventually I found that on altering the audio output settings in MPlayer and VLC, they sent sound to the speakers. So here we have a tweak that works, but don't ask me how. MPlayer Prefs>Audio>Configure driver - by altering 'Default' to hw=0:0 VLC Change prefs pane...

Re: no sound output LM5&6 fluxbox with cs46xx
Thanks for your reply, I had a look at the link you supplied. In that case the problem was solved by substituting another card, not quite the solution I was hoping for  . However I did try a couple of the commands for testing mentioned in that post, and tada! sound came from the speakers. That...

no sound output LM5&6 fluxbox with cs46xx
Hi, I ran the long-awaited fluxbox version of Mint 6 on a P4 box with a pci Cirrus Logic soundcard (to be precise lspci says it is CrystalClear SoundFusion with CL 4614/22/24/30). Alas, no sound emanates from my speakers. I have adjusted the mixer settings and looked at alsamixer in a terminal, no s...
