Re: What's the deal with the live session lock screen?

In the live system the user name is mint , the password is empty. This is regardless of the version of Mint (what you should better have reported with your question). Yeah, I said those are the login details, but it only works for tty and not for logging in via gui. Also I didn't think the version ...

Re: Mintupdate systray icon gone (Mate)

When you start the app you can go to settings and you should have the option there.
No reason to edit the configuration file yourself.
It might be the case that the default setting is to hide the tray icon when there are no new updates.

Re: How to create GRUB entries for starting with and without the propriatery driver?

If you are using Mint 18.x please see https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=236386 What exactly am I suppose to find there? I see that you (in the linked thread) have posted a link to instructions for installing the driver (which I already did) and uninstalling the default driver (which...

How to create GRUB entries for starting with and without the propriatery driver?

I installed the AMD GPU-PRO driver but I rarely need it and it's of questionable stability.

How would I create separate boot entries for starting with this driver and with the open source one?

Re: Harmonized Mint/Windows 10 storage drive

Does anyone know how to cancel mounting partitions in case windows is hibernating, instead of dumping the system into emergency mode?
And I'd rather not solve this by telling ntfs-3g to remove the hibernation file.

What's the deal with the live session lock screen?

If you boot mint from a live usb and your screen gets locked it seems like there is no way to log back in. Sure you can ctrl+alt+f1 and log into the terminal with mint <no password> and use it normally. But the live session login username seems to be a mystery and no amount of googling and duckduckg...

Re: [Solved] How to mount NTFS partitions?

@altair4 thanks for exlaining the mask even though I already added the link for the explanation in my post.
But the explanation about executing directories was actually useful :)

Re: [Solved] How to mount NTFS partitions?

I guess I'll just use umask=177 for now It's annoying that ntfs-3g driver doesn't have a separate option for windows system files... BTW why would you normally use different permissions for files and directories? I don't see a reason for this. Note to self: this is what the mask means http://askubun...

Re: [Solved] How to mount NTFS partitions?

A few more questions..
Now that I'm mounting the windows partition how should I prevent access to specific system folders?
At least how should I prevent it without root?

Re: [Solved] How to mount NTFS partitions?

I use /mnt instead of /media
And after coding some stuff I realized I cannot run my apps anymore, since the source&project files (shared by win & linux) are all on the data partition.
I tried setting the options nouser, exec but that didn't help, so I did umask=000
Is this ok?

Re: How to create a custom Mint LiveUSB?

Erased: if you can understand that tutorial, then you might want to take a look at debroot: https://github.com/rbern/debroot. You can use it as a GUI front-end to unpacking and repacking iso images, and it's worked rather well each time I've used it and saved me a lot of headache. :) Looks interest...

How to create a custom Mint LiveUSB?

How would I go about adding packages to and changing settings of a stock Mint installation?

The reason for this is that I want to have my environment on a live usb and to avoid having to install everything every time I reinstall Mint or install it on a new machine.

Yeah, it currently has Mint 18.1 Beta on it.
I want to put the new 18.1 release on it with some programming tools and apps that I use and also to change default settings, but I'll create a new thread for that.

How to hibernate when inactive, instead of suspending?

Due to the proprietary graphics card driver (that I need for studying) the system freezes after returning from suspended state.

So I want to hibernate instead of suspending the machine and apparently there are no option for this in power manager.
What's the simplest solution for this?

Thought so.

Is it possible for me to create a DVD with additional software preinstalled on it?
