Re: Why not base LMDE on Devuan?

I have enjoyed using Mint so far; but I'm worried about the adoption of systemd, its inherent and incidental problems, and its continued encroachment into more and more of a system's functionality. So - I've decided I should put my PC where my mouth is and switch to a non-systemd-based distribution....

Re: Suddenly getting complaints about libstdc++ in LD_PRELOAD

Long story short: Some evil source package configuration script was sticking things into my ~/.bashr - specifically, LD_PRELOAD, C_INCLUDE_PATH, CC, CXX and friends.

Re: [Solved] Kernel installation gone kinda wrong.

Removing ndiswrapper has worked for me too with the packages for kernel 4.15.0-22 . But - why is this not somehow taken care of automagically? Also - what about people who need ndiswrapper for some drivers?

Suddenly getting complaints about libstdc++ in LD_PRELOAD

I don't remember what my LD_PRELOAD used to be set to. But - today, I started getting error message whenever I run anything: ERROR: ld.so: object '/lib64/libstdc++.so.6' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored. so, I looked at LD_PRELOAD , and it turns out to co...

Sorry for being slightly spammy, but the crashes of course persist. Re: My system hangs repeatedly for no apparent reason. What to do?

Ok, booting with the newer kernel, and having Skype (64-bit) running, idle, got me crashing in under an hour. Have now shut Skype down and rebooted.

Re: My system hangs repeatedly for no apparent reason. What to do?

So, some news. So, I've been running with 4.4.0-116 for a few days with no hangs. I thought the NVIDIA drivers were properly installed (as DKMS ran something when I apt-get install'ed this kernel) - but apparently, I was running without the NVIDIA drivers. Also, I don't see a nouveau kernel module l...

A relatively quick step you might try is to revert to kernel 4.4.latest.
I'm a bit skeptical this would work since I (vaguely) remember trying this myself 4 months ago when I first experienced these hangs. But it's fair advice, I'll give it a proper try (again?) to be thorough and will report here.

/var/lib/initramfs files not removed when packages removed

If I uninstall (without purging) all Linux-kernel-related packages mentioning a certain version, e.g.: apt-get remove $(apt-cache search linux | grep X.Y.Z-WW | cut -d\ -f1 ) The folder /var/lib/initramfs-tools/X.Y.Z-WW-generic remains in place. This triggers error messages when running `update-init...

Re: MS Fonts

And if you want more fonts (not necessarily by Microsoft) - you could just copy them: Put your fonts on somewhere visible from your Linux system (a Windows partition, a USB flash drive, a machine accessible over the network etc.) Be root on your Mint machine (or run the following with sudo ) Copy a ...

Re: How do I troubleshoot a hang?

Moving this thread back up. A month and a half has passed (I now use Mint 18.3, with kernel 4.10.0-42-generic), hangs still occurring occasionally, and for the life of me I can't figure out what's going wrong.

My system hangs repeatedly for no apparent reason. What to do?

I use Linux Mint 18.2 with a 4.10.0-40 kernel on an x86_64 i5-6700K. For the past few months, I've occasionally had the system hang on me, for unclear reasons. Maybe it has something to do with Skype 64-bit for Linux I installed; or maybe the kernel version I'm using; or maybe it's the hardware - I ...

Re: copy-paste bug/issue with LXTerminal

The workaround I currently use is adding the following to my ~/.profile:

Code: Select all

# Leave "bracketed paste" mode; see:

[[ -t 0 && -t 1 ]] && printf "\e[?2004l"

copy-paste bug/issue with LXTerminal

I use LXTerminal 0.2.0 in Mint 18.2. Many times when I paste text into the terminal, instead of getting my pasted text , I end up with ~0my pasted text~1 . This is extremely annoying! I found this page on unix.stackexchange.com, which suggests a workaround, but that workaround is problematic in that...

Amarok spams my logs

I run Amarok on XFCE4 (yes, perhaps not a very common thing to do) on my Linux Mint 18.2 I find my `$HOME/.cache/upstart/startxfce4.log` is filling up with loads and loads of copies of the following line: QGLContext::makeCurrent(): Cannot make invalid context current. but if I shut Amarok off, no mo...

an app spams the log with innumerable error messages

My `$HOME/.cache/upstart/startxfce4.log` is filling up with loads and loads of copies of the following line: QGLContext::makeCurrent(): Cannot make invalid context current. Apparently, in my specific case, Amarok is the culprit (it probably doesn't like being run under XFCE); but - that's not the is...
