VMware will not start guest OS
I have two different machines almost exactly alike in HW and SW running VMware 17 and LM20. Both start VMware. Then I have a virtual OS (Win XP) which starts fine on one machine. I start VMware and from there open the guest OS. On the other machine this does not work. I start VMware and I navigate t...

Re: Very slow Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5357
it should be Xfce on that one at the most! dual core 1.3GHz, yea, for sure. I would use mint 20.x too honestly. 21 is heavier, go with the lesser requirement. You could tweak it heavily too. bluetooth? printing? what else? you shave off 4 or 5 processes and gain an extra 186mb of ram(the lesser gai...

Re: Very slow Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5357
You have a 6.2.x kernel installed; is that on purpose? I am not sure what you mean by "on purpose" but I just installed LM.21 and never did anything with the kernels (that I am aware of). Or maybe I installed it without being aware together with other updates. I see it also has 5.15.0-86....

Re: Possible to transfer OS to another HDD?
Clonezilla not working either. Using Gparted I shrunk the main partition in my 500GB SSD so it would fit in a smaller drive. It still boots and works fine. So far so good. Then I tried cloning the SSD to a 160GB Seagate 2.5" Momentus drive, this time using Clonezilla but I get the error that &q...

Re: Possible to transfer OS to another HDD?
I am going to be busy for the next few weeks and I am putting this on hold but so far I have learned that it is possible and not too complicated; that I should use Gparted to resize partitions and that I can use Clonezilla or Foxclone to clone disks. So I have the basic tools and understanding. When...

Re: Why I have 2 Home Directories? [Solved]
Just to try and be clearer, they are not exactly the same. Home in the first image is not the same as home in the second image. Your "home directory" is located at /home/oskar (or whatever username is appropriate). In the first image, Home refers to your home directory: /home/oskar . In t...

Re: Possible to transfer OS to another HDD?
Are you booting legacy and did you do an "erase and install" of LM21? You can check your boot mode with efibootmgr , if it says EFI variables are not supported you are booting legacy, anything else is UEFI. I ask because there is a bug in foxclone, it fails to copy grub with this setup* a...

Re: Possible to transfer OS to another HDD?
Did you disconnect the source drive before trying to boot from the clone? Yes. The cloning process finished and said everything was fine. I removed the internal drive and I put the cloned one in its place. The BIOS sees it is there but when I try to boot it just blinks. It is a laptop with only one...

Re: Possible to transfer OS to another HDD?
Connecting a drive via a usb-sata adapter is fine. I've done it many times in testing. Well the first experiment ended in failure. With Foxclone I copied the system disk to an external disk on a USB port and Foxclone reported O ll K orrect but when I put the new disk in the machine it will not boot...

Re: Possible to transfer OS to another HDD?
I've done it many times, most recently switching from a 512GB nvme drive to a 1TB drive. As I only have one nvme slot I took a full backup of the 512GB drive, swapped in the new drive and cloned the backup to it. Once I had confirmed it booted okay, I used gparted to resize the partitions to use th...

Re: Possible to transfer OS to another HDD?
From an imaging perspective, uefi boot is a lot more straightforward, all you need to worry about is the partition table and partitions. The whole point of using a utility like foxclone is that it takes care of these things for you. Read the section in the foxclone user guide on cloning. Subject to...

Very slow Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5357
I was tasked by my HQ (AKA "wife") to have a look at a couple of nephews' laptops which were too slow. I proceeded with my general protocol which is to (1) replace HDD with SSD, (2) expand RAM and (3) dump Windows and install LM Cinnamon. Both are old machines with dual core processors. On...

Re: Possible to transfer OS to another HDD?
Thank you both for your replies. Yes. foxclone (linked above), or clonezilla are pretty decent GUI options. I'm a fan of dd myself (commandline, easy enough, but a little more dangerous since it doesn't ask "are you sure"). It used to be, in ye olden times, that a HDD had a partition that ...

Re: Desktop disappeared
I have restarted several times and this work-around seems to have fixed the problem but I am still very curious as to why the problem happened in the first place.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Recommend an email client - not Thunderbird
Email clients didn't used to be that way. In my memory, and I am old, they were always "that way". How else could they be? I think you may be misremembering. If you are trying to set up something for someone who is impaired and you want it to be extremely simple you can configure a client...

Possible to transfer OS to another HDD?
Is it possible to replace the computer's HDD or SSD and transfer to it the OS so that the computer works exactly the same as before? Simplified scenario: I have a new empty SSD and want to install it in place of the old, smaller one but keeping the OS. Is this possible and practical? I mean with lar...

Copy/paste that file into the ~/.config/autostart folder and reboot, what happens? Nope. Does not autostart.
