On LMDE, couldn't find a way to specify / mount point

I tried to install LMDE 64-bit. Since I use SSDs and have 8 GB of memory, I never configure swap and just make everything in one partiion starting at /. I could not see how to do this with LMDE. The default is for three partitions including swap, but the manual method does not appear to allow for se...

Re: 19.2 Cinnamon update problems

The hardware is an HP laptop with 3rd Generation Core (Ivy Bridge) I7 processor bought in 2013. The Samsung SSD is accessed via external USB 3.0. I run Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon, Sparky Linux LXDE, and Gecko Linux (many flavors) on the same laptop, accessed via external USB 3.0, obviously on differen...

19.2 Cinnamon update problems

I downloaded 19.2 Cinnamon 64-bit yesterday. Today I installed it on a wiped Samsung SSD. Let's see if I can even remember all of the problems. Update took forever (from Oklahoma/Utah). When it finally finished, it complained about not being to write commit log (or something like that) I tried to up...

Subtle GRUB bug

All of the below was done via external USB enclosures on my circa-2013 HP laptop after removing the internal SATA drive to prevent creating a double-boot. I installed both Linux Mint 18.3 and ZorinOS (on separate SSDs). I usually use Ethernet to install an OS, but this time I used the option to not ...

Re: USB wireless adapters

Hmm. The github link you previously provided used v5.3.4, but your latest reply provided v.4.3.8, or so it appears. Do I misunderstand? The code I executed was: git clone -b v5.3.4 https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8812au.git cd rtl* sudo ./dkms-install.sh That github page is not a model of clarity....

Re: USB wireless adapters

I built a test Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.1 system. The instructions at the link you provided worked without too much drama. Now I need to decide if I feel lucky enough to buy the ASUS AC68 and test the driver in normal use.

Re: USB wireless adapters

I may have found the one, the Alfa AWUS036ACH. Someone posted Ubuntu installation instructions on Newegg, with them appearing to be valid. 1. Plug it in; light should come on. 2. Run 'lsusb' and look for 'Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8812AU 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WLAN Adapter'. 3. Run 'apt-get install r...

Re: USB wireless adapters

Thanks for the Wikidevi link. Now I can at least research the chipset in advance. The one I'm looking at now is ASUS AC68. The Wikidevi page for it states "USB ID not yet observed in any mainline kernel," which is a little surprising given that ASUS is one of the most popular vendors for routers and...

Re: USB wireless adapters

Sorry, I sold the T9UH on ebay. I contacted TP-Link and asked why the makefile died with errors. The response was that TP-Link could not support all Linux distributions. I was astounded by this, given that, as you know, Linux Mint is a spin of the most popular distribution. If it doesn't work on Ubu...

Re: SOLVED: Memory leakage

Nope, gsettings did not work. I built a Cinnamon 19.1 64-bit system and installed all updates. I installed mate-themes because that's where TraditionalOk comes from. Then I executed gsettings. In Themes, TraditionalOk appeared to be set, but the window borders were definitely not TraditionalOk.

USB wireless adapters

Are there any USB wireless adapters that work with Linux? I tried the TP-Link Archer T9UH, but the makefile died with errors, including a missing .h file (I don't think it was ever tested). My laptop has below average wireless and I'd like to improve that. My preference would be for one with a stand...

Re: Memory leakage

Thanks for the response. I would love to migrate to 19.1, but metacity-theme-1.xml format is no longer supported in Cinnamon, which means my favorite TraditionalOk cannot be used. The reason I'm using multiple distributions is an ongoing search for the best one with TraditionalOk. The same hardware ...

SOLVED: Memory leakage

I use a few different Linux distributions; for now that's Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3, Sparky Linux LXDE, and Gecko Linux Cinnamon, all 64-bit. I use Firefox, Icecat, and Waterfox for various purposes, terminating and restarting them when I want a clean slate. I use Leafpad as my dumb editor. All of th...

Re: Bring back support for metacity-theme-1.xml format in Cinnamon

Thanks again for the reply. That's too bad. I guess I'll migrate to MATE after Linux Mint 18.3 is out of support.

SOLVED: Bring back support for metacity-theme-1.xml format in Cinnamon

Windows borders in metacity-theme-1.xml format are no longer supported as of Cinnamon version 3.8.x or above. Please add support for them in the next version of Cinnamon.

SOLVED: Mint won't install via USB on HP laptop

Up until now I've only installed Mint via internal SATA, which has always been okay. But on an HP ProBook laptop (5-6 years old, Ivy Bridge processor), I cannot install Mint 18.3 via a USB (2.0 or 3.0) external enclosure. I've recently tested a number of distributions on this laptop, with some faili...

SOLVED: mate-themes no longer contains TraditionalOk for Windows borders

In 18.3 Cinnamon and before, TraditionalOk was included as one of the Windows borders when mate-themes was installed. In 19 Cinnamon, TraditionalOk is no longer included. Why was it deleted? Is there any way to install it separately?

Re: Documents disappeared from My Computer in Files

I'll bet if I had looked at that file before I manually added a bookmark, the Documents entry would have been missing. Now, however, that Documents line is present. If it happens again, I will know where to look. I think I caused the problem due to my terrible typing. Sometimes I accidentally activa...
