Re: Is this the right order to get LMDE Stable?

I agree with michaelzap, far better option is to get plain debian or crunchbang and add Mint repo.
The next question will be what is in Mint repos that you want, apart from icons, wallpapers? I have LMDE on one of the laptops but haven't come across any useful tools that i can't apt-get on debian.

Re: APT vs. Aptitude in the real life

On sid and testing branches i prefer using aptitute, safe-upgrade and dist-upgrade option's clear difference is useful. On stable install apt-get is good enough. On distro's that use debian as base I go with whatever default is. As mentioned earlier, make sure to stick to one chosen package manager.

Re: Considering of switching to LMDE

Default install of LMDE is based on testing - it can never be stable as the name suggest. Does OP state that he is a tester, developer, needs "bleeding edge" package versions? No , he states that he needs a stable system. Why do you insist for him to use the testing and development branch? I have Ge...

Re: Considering of switching to LMDE

The original poster stresses that he is not "linux savvy" and just wants a stable & functional system that will do all he needs without too much tweaking and configuring. Plus the use of clementine PPA. With this in mind, MintDE is not the ideal system for the requirements he provided. Mint10 fits t...

first thing to learn is LDME is based on debian testing and it can not be stable by definition.

Re: Fresh install of LMDE, what not to update?

The whole point of Mint DE is that it's rolling distro based on testing branch. It gets lots of updates daily, chopped and changed often with a good risk of breakages. The idea is to keep this system fully updated at least weekly. The longer the time between updates the more of a chance that it woul...

Re: Updated kernel refuses to boot

It seems the new kernel boots but you need to install/compile graphics module for new kernel.
Have you tried alt-ctr-F1 at blank screen to switch to another tty?
You might want to try http://smxi.org/ script to help you with kernel and drivers install.

Re: Install without format

why stop at just /home as separate partition. Partitions on my system that don't get formatted: /home /home/user/music /home/user/video /home/user/downloads /opt /usr/local /backup /windows <--- custom FAT32 partition, makes life easier in dual boot with Win setup A bit more work to configure fstab ...

thanks I tried it, didn't work for me. I did some research, it seem like not refreshing is normal Thunar operation, it isn't the end of the world, will have to use F5 more often. 8)

Re: If you compile - remember build-essential

i had to get build-essential, kernel source and headers for 180.44 nVidia drivers install, worked like charm with 2x8600GTs in AFR mode. Even gamers love Mint :D

xfce 4.6 doesn't refresh desktop?

Hi all, First off, very impressed with Mint 6 XFCE edition, probably friendliest distro i've ever tried and all this on CD install - sweet! OK, my nVidia SLi setup crashed restricted drivers install, but that's nvidia config fault, fix that after a while :) Upgraded Xfce to 4.6 which went well, apar...
