Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Nevermind. I figured it out. Haswell has a issue where hdmi sound is broken when iommu is enabled in grub. To fix it i put "intel_iommu=on,igfx_off". I did not realise at the time that this will in turn break pci passthrough. I got passthrough to work up to the point where the driver is installing a...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hi all. I've not been using qemu kvm for a while for reason. I'm getting back into it now and unfortunately for me with a change in hardware for the worse. I'm using Intel graphics for the host and a Radeon RX 470 for the windows 10 guest. And naturaly the way my luck goes i have the issue where Win...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hi powerhouse, thanks for making this tutorial. If you don't mind, I'd like some guidance. I just built a new system specifically for VGA passthrough. Specs are as follows: Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K7 AMD Ryzen 1600x Nvidia GTX760FTW (for Linux) Nvidia GTX970FTW (for passthrough) 32GB memory 120GB ...

Re: move disk to new laptop

ran into another issue. This laptop doesn't have room for a second disk. Is it possible to connect this disk to a usb port and boot from there? Or am I then going to need to reinstall? This is also an option. https://www.takealot.com/aluminum-universal-sata-2nd-hdd-caddy-12-7-mm-hard-drive-enclosu/...

Re: move disk to new laptop

Hi, Quick and possibly silly question.. I just got a new laptop. Can I take out the SSD with Mint 18.1 and transfer it to the new machine? Or is this going to lead to all sorts of trouble? Suggestions, tips and links would be appreciated! You shouldn't have any issues. If you are using the default ...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hello, Powerhouse, Have you tried using looking glass yet? You have to have a quadro professional card, but it changes qemu so that you do not need an external monitor for the gaming card. You see your VM in a window with full gaming. https://looking-glass.hostfission.com/ I will never buy a quadro...

Custom kernel and Nvidia driver

So i have this odd problem. I use a custom kernel with an ACS override patch to let me use 2 gpu's in my pc. One for host and one for guest. When i install the newly compiled kernel i can install the Nvidia driver for the host only once without issue. If i reinstall Mint and the custom kernel or if ...

"I'm Feeling Lucky" feature. It was so easy to edit photos with this simple feature. Just open your photo and click the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button and it would set your brightness and contrast pretty much spot on. I tried to setup Google Pisaca in LMDE2 and Mint 18.3 via WINE but it crashes all the...

Re: sharing folders - QEMU-KVM & Windows guest

Hello I've used virtualbox and sharing folders with a Windows guest is straightforward. Though with QEMU-KVM it doesn't seem to be. I keep reading about samba-share, but it's not clear how to do this. Is there a step-by-step guide that someone could point me to? thanks Hi. You can read the man page...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I have no idea regarding 4.9+ kernel and ACS patch. You can check the kernel sources and look at the change log. It should be listed. See https://www.kernel.org/ and https://kernelnewbies.org/Linux_4.9 . Where did you read that kernel 4.9+ includes the ACS patch? I didn't see it, but haven't resear...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I've read on several forums that the acs override patch has been added since kernel version 4.9. I installed kernel 4.13 the other day and it doesn't work. Is this true or is it hit and miss depending on hardware? Just to be sure, you did modify your grub file to enable ACS and ran update-grub? If ...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I'm getting a few issues. Firstly if I uncomment '-vga none' I get the error 'qemu-system-x86_64: Too many IDE buses defined (3 > 2)'. When it's commented as above I get a popup screen for the network boot, but it fails with 'Boot failed: Could not read from CDROM (code 0003)'. In my experience if ...

or settle with the j1900 brix and use it for my workstation (office work and light picture editing) For this i would not recommend a j1900 cpu. If your budget is really that tight then go for it but i would recommend going for an i3 instead. I recommended the j1900 or j2900 because your original re...

From past experience if the sytem tells you your password is wrong then that is what the problem is. You are typing it wrong.

Are you perhaps working on a second user account that was created after the initial install? Usualy only the first account is a sudoer.

I use gkrellm for monitoring. It's in the repo and works well enough.

The interface is really ugly though but i see on google images you can change the theme.
