Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hello, I would like to give a big thank you to powerhouse and everyone who helped to create this guide. I love my setup with the Windows VM. It just works :> But still, I got a networking problem when I have installed Docker following the official guide . The VM can't reach the internet anymore aft...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hi guys, it's been a while since I contributed to this thread (last comment was on page 13 8) ). Ever since I got my Windows 10 VM working, I've been a happy camper. And recently I've figured out how to create a Linux VM with GPU passthrough. Linux is a bit more picky when it comes to emulated hardw...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hi JagR35, I'm a bit confused about your screenshots: - In the first ones, you try to bring up 'br0`, in the latter ones the name of the bridge is 'xenbr0' - Your interfaces file shows you're behind a router (your gateway address in your interfaces file: 192.168.0.1), but the IP address of the syste...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I cheered too soon  , but I think I've found the problem: the fan of the PSU wasn't running, causing the PSU to overheat and force a reset. So, I'll have to return it and wait...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I made a bad typo: it did NOT ran hotter than 65 degrees :P During stress tests (with stress -c 8, for example) CPU temperature almost hit 80 C, so overheating wasn't the problem. I ran extensive memory tests (with memtest86+), also no issues found. And ever since I ran updates, I'm no longer able t...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I have a strange situation: the past few days my system crashes/reboots when I run a heavy-duty game on the Windows VM. Linux logs show nothing, no hint as to why it decided to reboot. I installed linux-crashdump to see if a next crash might reveal something. I also started to log CPU and motherboar...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Another issue i encountered was slow and stuttering sound aka "demonic sound" when i tried using my NVIDIA GPU audo via HDMI. Found the fix in this thread, might be good to add it in the troubleshoot section. It is done on the windows side and has to do with interrupts. http://forums.guru3d.com/sho...

I came to the same conclusion. My solution was a complete reinstall (barely started and with the new nvme-ssd it's done in an instant) and permanently disabling network-manager. I dislike the tool pretty much

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Thanks David, that is very useful. I had added the -monitor option to my own script, but haven't done much with it. I guess I will play with that and reference your post in the how-to. Thanks. I've also scripted my setup it to make my life a bit easier, including these reset/powerdown/wake-up calls...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hi, I just want to say I've installed the extra sound card ( Asus Xonar DG-X PCIe) and used step 12 of the how-to to pass it on to Windows, nothing fancy, but it works fantastically. No more cracking sound... I also want to share the following... As I don't want to keep the qemu-monitors open all th...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Powerhouse asked me to post my settings as well as tell a bit about the things I ran into when creating my VM, so here I go... My apologies upfront, it turned out te be a long read 8) Hardware: Core i7 6700 MSI Z170a SLI Plus 16 GB memory DDR4 2133MHz 256 GB Intel 600P PCIe M.2 SSD Graphics: IGD Int...

Re: Post your Passmark results of your Windows VM

There’s only one tiny thing still bugging me: Win10 refuses to install graphics drivers updates (they show up in Windows update for some reason), it fails and crashes. Passmark also shows issues with DirectX 12, hence the incomplete score. I’ll try to sort that one out later… UPDATE: I've sorted it...

Re: Post your Passmark results of your Windows VM

Yes! Finally after a very bumpy ride I finally managed to avoid a ‘reboot-loop’ when trying to install the Radeon drivers! But first: many thanks for this very extensive guide, Powerhouse. Without it I wouldn’t even have started :) Whatever I tried with q35 as a machine, as soon as I attempted to in...
