Re: Can't install linux anymore?

I had a system a little while back where I could not get Mint (or any Linux) to install either, and I suspected that the GTX 1050 and the integrated graphics were conflicting. I discovered that plugging in a monitor to both the graphics card and the on board card during installation did the trick. I...

Re: On-Line banking

I have an old laptop that runs an encrypted Linux Mint, which I use exclusively for banking. I update it every time I power it on, do whatever banking I need to, and then shut it down. I go to no other sites on this laptop ever, and if I need to look something up while I am banking, I use my primary...

Re: Why are we so proud of our [Linux] OSs?

I think grateful is the word I would use for the privilege of using Linux Mint. I could not have put how I feel about Linux any better. I am no coder, nor have I a particularly deep understanding of how computers work. And yet, computers govern nearly every aspect of my existence. And thus, I need ...

Re: How to Install DaVinci Resolve with Terminal

In case you (or someone else) decides to try again, here is a very detailed step-by-step for installing DaVinci Resolve on Mint, as posted on the Blackmagic Design forums: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?p=366963&sid=d9945d5f82f271807e3968269541a5a8#p366963 (it is the second to last...

Re: DaVinci Resolve 14 'Free' - No audio or h264 support

As a professional colorist and someone who uses DaVinci Resolve Studio for a living, I can say say that it is both extremely powerful and rather limited in scope. I wanted to post a few clarifications for those interested, though sadly, no real solutions. tl;dr - DaVinci Resolve is a great tool for ...

A Belated Hello

Hello, Linux Mint forum members. I read this forum often, but post rarely. I am about to start my first more technical thread, and felt it would be rude of me to do so without first introducing myself. I am a television colorist based in Los Angeles, and I have been using Linux Mint for a little ove...

Re: This forum is FRIENDLY....

Thanks for the encouragement. As I get better acquainted with the tools available in the Linux multiverse, I will gladly share what knowledge I can. Sadly, the vast majority of my experience is with software only available on MacOS and Windows. I am, however, actively working to remedy this.

Re: What about dropping Ubuntu-based Mint Edition ?

Just to clarify, LMDE isn't a rolling edition, its built on a fixed Debian base. Thank you for the clarification. I freely admit that my understanding of such things is limited, and I hang around these forums in the hopes of absorbing others' knowledge. I was basing my decision on the LMDE 2 downlo...

Re: What about dropping Ubuntu-based Mint Edition ?

If I may chime in, I can provide the perspective of a combination Linux noob and less technical user. I came to Mint because I had heard it was easy to install and use, updates and package were very straightforward, and that I did not have to be a terminal master to be able to use it. I found all of...

Re: What made you switch to Linux Mint?

I switched to Linux because of Win 8/10. My mom bought a cheap HP laptop with Win 8 on it which she hated, and I couldn't phone troubleshoot it for her (couldn't navigate it despite being a Windows user since Win 3.11). Then, a couple years later, it ninja-upgraded itself to Win 10, and essentially ...

Re: Do you use Windows?

Sadly, I had to go with "Often..." but I am slowly working my way up the list (I hope to reach the top someday). I have 4 systems at home, one LM only for banking, 2 Dual boot LM/Win7 for everyday tasks, and one Win10 for gaming (getting the dual boot treatment soon). I stay on the Linux side as muc...

Re: Libreoffice normal vs flatpak

If your question is about the general difference between normal and flatpak installations, there is a great summary in the Linux Mint blog from their October 2017 Monthly News: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3418 In a nutshell, the version of LibreOffice in the software repositories (the normal versi...

Re: I got fired from my job last week because of my autism :(

My brother has autism, and for many years he had a job as a regression tester for a software company, despite no formal computer training. He hated the cubicle life, but once his headphones were on, he was an absolute wizard at breaking software in ways no one had ever thought to try. His mantra was...

Re: This forum is FRIENDLY....

I love this forum as well. I read it all the time, though I almost never post, as I have virtually nothing to contribute technically (I am pretty tech savvy for an artist, but not so much for a tech). That said, it has helped me immensely, and is a big reason I tried and stick with Mint. I look forw...

Thank you, Linux Mint

Hi, all. I am new to both Linux Mint and Linux in general, and I wanted to take a moment to say thank you. The prospect of switching from Windows to Linux was daunting, but Linux Mint 18.1 made it very simple and straightforward. Quite frankly I had more trouble getting Windows to let go of my machi...
