Re: Email Client

The saga rolls on. :D I found some interesting reading HERE: https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu-linux-tips/get-latest-mozilla-thunderbird-for-linux/ The Ubuntu instructions returned version 60 which doesn’t work now for a lot of us and I guess that is the latest on the ppa so no surprises there. H...

Re: Email Client

Ok, starting with rene. You make a valid point about Mint not shipping the latest version of Thunderbird, so, the question is, how do I install the latest version when Synaptic says I’ve got the latest version? My guess is it must be a Terminal instruction but what? As you can see I’m not up to spee...

Re: Email Client

I’ve been following this thread because I have the same problem. Can’t make up my mind whether it is Thunderbird (no longer run by Monzilla) or G-mail that has screwed things up, but I need to be able to download E-Mails onto my computer as I don’t always have an internet connection whilst travellin...

Re: reformatting from NTFS to Ext4

Thanks for your time and patience Bob, it is appreciated. :D I had no idea a Clone and a Image were two different things. Throw in Timeshift being the equivalent of a Windows Restore Point, and therefore not much use in the case of a complete HDD failure, I am well out of my depth. :( However...

Samsung SyncMaster 226BW Monitor

My one works OK but the Menu – Brightness – Contrast – Auto controls on the bottom don’t. The Monitor itself works properly on Windows, so I’m guessing it is a Driver issue. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else uses one that works properly, and if so, what driver they use? "Mint 18.0 Cinnamon if th...

Re: reformatting from NTFS to Ext4

Thanks bob466. Sorry about the time it’s taken to get back on this but it is falling further down my ladder of importance. :D Anyway, the 1 gig Flashdrive was very old so I found another, reformatted that and that was too small also. I then found a 2 Gb one and that fitted the repair information. Cr...

Re: reformatting from NTFS to Ext4

Well what a mission this has been. I started off trying to format a new HDD to Ext4 with Gparted to accommodate Timeshift. The result of that was much grief because on my computer the HDD automatically become mounted when I plugged it in, thus Gparted was incapacitated until I dismounted the HDD. :r...

Re: reformatting from NTFS to Ext4

Hi Bob466 I can’t help thinking the Format (Ext4) of the USB External Drive is causing a problem. The Format was changed from NTFS to Ext4 to accommodate “Timeshift” which I read somewhere required EXT? Format as it wasn’t compatible with NTFS. Now we have Macirum which has to be set up on a Winwoes...

Re: reformatting from NTFS to Ext4

I give up. :( Unfortunately pbear following you instructions doesn’t bring up "Open as Administrator." as an option. All I get is: Create New Folder (Greyed Out) Create New Document Greyed Out) Open in Terminal Open as Root Arrange Items Organize by Name (Greyed Out) Show Hidden Files Paste (Greyed ...

Re: reformatting from NTFS to Ext4

Well, what a challenge this has become. :? I thought I’d try the Macrium method first so fired up the Winwoes machine and away I went only to discover I couldn’t remember what I’d done with my unused CD’s and DVD’s so thought no problem, nobody uses them any more and a lot of new computers don’t eve...

Re: reformatting from NTFS to Ext4

Right, so that covers equal or larger Drives but how about smaller ones? There are tutorials on the web, but yes, clonezilla can restore to a smaller drive. You need to first shrink the source partition then use clonezilla's advanced options where there is a feature that can be invoked. However it'...

Re: reformatting from NTFS to Ext4

Right, so that covers equal or larger Drives but how about smaller ones? I’ve got a 100Gb of System & Data files sitting on a 500Gb drive where a 250Gb Drive would be perfectly adequate to handle said Data. I’m picking one might have to partition the 500Gb Drive to 250Gb and then clone just the Part...

Re: reformatting from NTFS to Ext4

Ok, whilst on the topic of Back-Up programs, my understanding is that some of them can only restore to drives of exactly the same size.

Here’s a scenario.

I have a 500Gb Drive with only 100Gb used.

Can I restore that to a 250Gb Drive or 1Tb Drive?

Re: reformatting from NTFS to Ext4

Do you have a friend who can burn a Macrium disk for you? Probably easier to learn than Clonezilla. See this tutorial . OTOH, if you plan to do image backups going forward, then might be worth the time to learn Clonezilla. It's not difficult, just clunky. Thanks pbear, I looked at Clonezilla and ca...

Re: reformatting from NTFS to Ext4

Ok, I think I’d better clarify exactly what I’m trying to achieve. The situation is a complete HDD failure. (the heads and the disks have been at war.) I want to install a brand new HDD and install on it what I’ve backed up on my External Drive. To do this I have to boot from a Mint Flash Drive and ...
