Re: DE or Distro with REAL scrollbars

The OP didn't ask an opinion question, they asked a technical question and I answered it.

Re: DE or Distro with REAL scrollbars

Change the gtk theme. On my phone right now so cant tell you where but think it's under the "themes" icon in settings. Adwaita is the gnome theme with disappearing scroll bars. Not sure the theme dialog says "gtk theme" might be something like "application " theme. Fyi, this is not an attribute of a...

Re: KDE: How do I increase the size of the grabbable area that allows me to resize the windows? [SOLVED]

KDE allows alt key + right mouse button resize without have to hunt for the window border/resize handle. In case you didn't feel like resizing the border :D

Re: Gnome: How do I increase the size of the grabbable area that allows me to resize the windows?

Are you attempting to resize a window in Gnome but having trouble clicking on the grab handle because it is thin? Instead of that, I do this: all DEs and WMs, except Gnome, will allow you to hold the alt key and right mouse button and resize. You can do this at any point in the window and don't need...

Re: Where to turn for support with other distros?

Hoser Rob hit the nail on the head: you have to know how to ask questions. Not saying the OP doesn't but I see question after question from folks who just don't know how to ask something so the folks reading can effectively answer.

Re: Where to turn for support with other distros?

So, in the past year or so since I completely ditched Windows I've played with a ton of different distrobutions. Regardless of popularity, I seem to have trouble getting any help on their respective forums. Is there a subforum here where I may post questions regarding other distrobutions? You folks...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

1998 - was in the military and saw a retail box of Mandrake Linux on the shelf in the base exchange so bought it. I already knew of other OS alternatives to windows at that time so was curious. Never looked back.

Re: Who no longer uses Windows?

Switched to Linux as my main desktop about 20 years ago but kept windows around for gaming. Last year I realized I never booted the windows drive (dual boot, separate drives) so decided to use that drive for gaming only using Steam and wine. Not going back to windows ever. Hated it since 1993 when I...

Currently running on oem workstation but considering building next time. Personally I think building a PC is a PITA but then again I am not a young guy. Used to enjoy it years ago.

Re: Cinnamon versus KDE

Not to mention more stable. KDE has always fascinated me because it is so configurable, but since the "plasma" series came out, I have tried it numerous times in numerous distros and none of them are stable: I always get desktop crashes or other glitches I don't get in other DEs. Too bad really sinc...

Re: How do passwords work?

Not sure this is necessary but I wanted to clarify some terminology because it bugs me. Passwords are hashed, as other posters have mentioned. Passwords are never encrypted, or rather should never be encrypted. The term "encrypted" gets misused but I understand why (universal term for obfuscation). ...

Re: USB flash drive permissions

I've never used exfat before but I did some googling and found an article on its use in Manjaro Linux: https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=ExFAT_file_system The article states "So anyone can read it, execute from it, but only root can delete files & write to the partition." This may explain you...

Re: USB flash drive permissions

What file system are you using on the flash drive? If you are sharing it with windows, you should be using fat32 and then permissions are irrelevant. I suppose you could use ntfs as well but I have never done that.

Re: Turning Desktop Installs in to Headless/GUI less Server-like Systems

+1 - silly to install Linux with X and a desktop, only to rip out thousands of files later. As jimallyn stated, easier to start with a gui-less install like Debian and just set it up for what you need.
