Re: Who can maintain Linux for my wife

This issue interested me as well, we are both in our late 60's and converted to Linux Mint 3 years ago. At the time I had the same thoughts as you however 3 years on and I'm not the slightest worried. On the wife's laptop I stick to the programmes that are in the prime support repository ie those in...

Re: Cell Phone Compatibility?

Android here, set the cell phone up as a FTP server, I use the FTP function in the Solid Explorer file manager. Then using the FTP address given by Solid Explorer in the Mint file manager (eg Thunar or Nemo) the cell phone directory directory structure is shown. An alternative is to use Filezilla in...

Re: Chromecast not found

Hi, Mint 18.3 and 19.1 here with XFCE and of course a Chromecast which I use every day and absolutely rock solid however in the distant past I did have an issue to do with the IP address that the Chromecast was allocated by the router. While I can't confirm it, it appeared that the Chromecast wanted...

Re: VLC media player locks up on mint 19.1

I've had a similar issue before, try allowing the creation of a new vlc config file by running:

mv $HOME/.config/vlc/vlcrc $HOME/.config/vlc/vlcrc_bak

Haven't had a problem since.

Re: Mint 19 Opinions and Reviews

I've put Linux Mint 19.1 XFCE on a Dell 6420 and a Lenovo T420s. Both installations just worked straight out of the box with only one comment, Samba. In fairness this is probably a Samba issue rather than a Mint issue. In the home environment at least there appears to be a subtle shift to using Samb...

Re: Newbie Question on Bluetooth

65ft is a long way for bluetooth. A better all round solution is to use a chromecast on your TV and VLC v3 (available via LM Menu /Software/flatpak). A version 1 of chromecast is all you need. V3 of VLC is needed tho, no lag at all. Great for sending sound as well as videos to your TV. Works a treat.

Re: Streaming recording

I use "Streamripper" from the command line, use streamripper -help for all the options. Works like magic. I didn't see an option for starting recording, however you can tell it to quit after so many Meg/Gigs or seconds. As an example I usually use at the command line: streamripper (URL) -d (destinat...

Re: free online password generators: yay or nay

I'm definitely not a fan of online password generators. In my past life using Windows I've used the Excel spreadsheet as suggested above. Now, in the Linux world I generate a random password from the command line using a method suggested in this article https://tinyurl.com/glrcjlr .

Re: pulseaudio-dlna to chromecast initialize time

An update, I've come across the pulseaudio-dlna delay issue in another forum, there was no solution there either.. Since then I installed VLC V3 via the Software Manager (Flatpak), audio casting to Chromecast works with no delay :D . Again VLC demonstrates how capable it is. Happiness is ......

Re: pulseaudio-dlna to chromecast initialize time

Thanks for ideas. I've rebooted more times than I can count. Videostream Chrome extension for video files works perfectly, unfortunately it doesn't do audio only. What's changed to induce the delay, well I've racked my brains over that one, nothing fell out tho ;-) Like you suggest I'm beginning to ...

Re: pulseaudio-dlna to chromecast initialize time

Hi MrEen, thanks for that research. 1. I deleted the files in .config/pulse - no change 2. I started pulseaudio-dlna with the ip address of the chromecast - no change 3. I started pulseaudio using port 10291 - the error message re port 8080 disappeared so I will stick with port 10291 :) . No change ...

pulseaudio-dlna to chromecast initialize time

Hello all, I've been using pulseaudio-dlna to send sound media to a chromecast for over a year now. It has worked like magic. Using any media player (Audacious is my preferred) it would connect/play within 3 - 5 seconds max. However suddenly the connect/play has gone to a minute or more. Without suc...

Re: Old laptop advice

I've got a C700 (500G HDD and 2G ram) with Mint XFCE installed on it. Gets a little bogged down if lots of web pages are open (>15) using Opera or Firefox. I initially used Lubuntu then tried Mint XFCE and stuck with that. Takes a while to boot up but once its there it runs everyday tasks fine. Just...

Re: MP3 to CDA Conversion

Have you checked that when burning the disk you are "Closing the Disk" which means no more information can be written to it. Many CD/DVD players won't play the disk unless it is closed. Equally only the CD/DVD recorder that the music was recorded on will play it.

I couldn't get Freemind to run in Mint XFCE 18 and then discovered Freeplane. Its very very similar to Freemind, loads mm files ok and is available from the default repository (Mint Software Manager).

Re: What made you switch to Linux Mint?

My experience echoes many posts here. I was a long time Windows user, tried various Linux distros over the years but driver issues always sent me back to Windows. Win10 came along and it was time to have another look, tried Mint 17 and immediately thought wow this works, tried several other distros ...
