Re: <SOLVED> getting rid of ads in browser, Hosts file or ad blocker?
If you really really want to utilize the host file to block ads I would install Host Minder which is available in the Software Manager. However uBlock Origin installed as a Firefox extension is the winner for me.

Re: Ear buds paired but won't connect Linux Mint 21.3
I recently had to work thru this with a pair of Sennheisser BT20 wireless earphones. They worked fine on my phone however not at all well on laptop (wouldn't connect). Eventually bought a Sennheisser USB dongle (APX) to solve the problem. Note you don't pair the dongle like you would a bluetooth dev...

Re: Gnote Broken
If you go down the re install path you could use the Syncrhonize Notes function to back up your gnote data to another location or just copy the /.local/share/gnote directory to a backup location. Anyway using sudo apt remove gnote should remove gnote but leave the config and data files intact.

Re: G'day from Downunder
G-day matey, yep also from the East side of said ditch, just down the road from Rolly. I retired 6+ years ago and ventured into Linux at that point. Now its hard to remember what MS Windows stands for (although it did serve me ok sort of in my work environment). Did my best to break Linux (Mint) as ...

Re: Dell Latitude E6440 webcam
I've got a Dell 6420 and 6420, to be honest the webcam performance is very average. Get yourself a decent usb webcam and your daughter will appreciate seeing your smile with a lot more clarity

I'm using Mint 20.2 XFCE and HP Laser Jet Pro MFP283, confirming sane-airscan (installed from from software manager) works great for scanning.

Re: Suggestions for DLNA server?
I found MiniDLNA a little tedious as well, particularly with updating the media. If Gerbera doesn't work for you then try Universal Media Server (UMS). UMS is a GUI based java script, it worked best for me when I turned off as many options as possible. In the end I found using the Media Server funct...

Re: Another laptop suspend issue
I believe that I have had the same experience (mouse waking up computer/laptop from suspend) and found the solution for me in a Kubuntu forum https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php/69614-Disable-wake-on-mouse-movement. To summarize the Kubuntu forum solution: To see what activates wakeup use: ...

Re: What Can I do to Stop VLC From Crapping Out?
Moving the existing VLC configuration to a bak file will make VLC create a totally new config file (worked for me):
mv $HOME/.config/vlc/vlcrc $HOME/.config/vlc/vlcrc_bak
mv $HOME/.config/vlc/vlcrc $HOME/.config/vlc/vlcrc_bak

Re: Who can maintain Linux for my wife
This issue interested me as well, we are both in our late 60's and converted to Linux Mint 3 years ago. At the time I had the same thoughts as you however 3 years on and I'm not the slightest worried. On the wife's laptop I stick to the programmes that are in the prime support repository ie those in...

Re: Cell Phone Compatibility?
Android here, set the cell phone up as a FTP server, I use the FTP function in the Solid Explorer file manager. Then using the FTP address given by Solid Explorer in the Mint file manager (eg Thunar or Nemo) the cell phone directory directory structure is shown. An alternative is to use Filezilla in...

Hi, Mint 18.3 and 19.1 here with XFCE and of course a Chromecast which I use every day and absolutely rock solid however in the distant past I did have an issue to do with the IP address that the Chromecast was allocated by the router. While I can't confirm it, it appeared that the Chromecast wanted...

Re: VLC media player locks up on mint 19.1
I've had a similar issue before, try allowing the creation of a new vlc config file by running:
mv $HOME/.config/vlc/vlcrc $HOME/.config/vlc/vlcrc_bak
Haven't had a problem since.
mv $HOME/.config/vlc/vlcrc $HOME/.config/vlc/vlcrc_bak
Haven't had a problem since.

Re: Mint 19 Opinions and Reviews
I've put Linux Mint 19.1 XFCE on a Dell 6420 and a Lenovo T420s. Both installations just worked straight out of the box with only one comment, Samba. In fairness this is probably a Samba issue rather than a Mint issue. In the home environment at least there appears to be a subtle shift to using Samb...

Re: Newbie Question on Bluetooth
65ft is a long way for bluetooth. A better all round solution is to use a chromecast on your TV and VLC v3 (available via LM Menu /Software/flatpak). A version 1 of chromecast is all you need. V3 of VLC is needed tho, no lag at all. Great for sending sound as well as videos to your TV. Works a treat.

Re: Streaming recording
I use "Streamripper" from the command line, use streamripper -help for all the options. Works like magic. I didn't see an option for starting recording, however you can tell it to quit after so many Meg/Gigs or seconds. As an example I usually use at the command line: streamripper (URL) -d...

Re: free online password generators: yay or nay
I'm definitely not a fan of online password generators. In my past life using Windows I've used the Excel spreadsheet as suggested above. Now, in the Linux world I generate a random password from the command line using a method suggested in this article https://tinyurl.com/glrcjlr .
