guvcview ignoring defaults ..

Fitted a USB webcam to my laptop. Installed guvcview to configure. Followed advice about 5) From a terminal give this command: sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/guvcview.desktop 6) In the file, find the following line: Exec=guvcview 7) Replace it with the following line: Exec=guvcview -p /whatever ...

encrypted home folder from old disk can't be mounted on new ?

Decided to get ahead of the bus and replace a failing HDD on my laptop. Put a fresh copy of Mint on the new disk which is fully encrypted, with the home folder also being encrypted. Trying to pull data off the old disk, but I can't seem to mount it. I can unlock and mount the disk itself. But then I...

Re: 2 packages blacklisted (not by me) in System Updates

I will of course unblacklist them. Be careful. The kernel configuration may have done it. Take a look in /lib/modprobe.d/ , and you should see a whole lot of things blacklisted. Thanks for the heads up. No mention of them in any file in there (including blacklist_linux_5.4.0-42-generic.conf)

Re: 2 packages blacklisted (not by me) in System Updates

Interesting. I personally would make a snapshot and then unblacklist those two packages. It's important that linux-firmware is kept up-to-date. Out of interest, why do you have linux-meta-hwe installed? It's not installed by default on my LM 20 MATE system. Well right now they are up to date. So no...

Re: Fully encrypted disk - graphical password prompt ?

Well, I've looked at the GRUB source code now, so I know it's stuck as a really fugly text input. The reason /boot is installed unencrypted on a separate partition is because GRUB can't pass the decryption password to the Linux kernel you are booting. So in theory you'd need to enter the decrypt pas...

Re: Shutdown problem

Can you see the terminal output as it's shutting down ?

Try pressing ESC and see what is being reported and what is causing it to "stick".

What happens if you try "sudo shutdown 0" into a terminal ?

2 packages blacklisted (not by me) in System Updates

After a recent system update via Update Manager, I noticed that there are 3 packages in the "Blacklist" section. linux-firmware linux-meta-hwe pan Now I know all about Pan. I explicitly pinned it's version a while back after a disastrous release. However at no point have I ever blacklisted the two "...

Re: Fully encrypted disk - graphical password prompt ?

Thought I would update this query with some more detail and what I think is the correct answer. Which is NO. digging into the GRUB source code, I find that the password prompt comes from grub-2.04/disk/luks.c Line 329: grub_puts_ (N_("Attempting to decrypt master key...")); and tracing that call thr...

Fully encrypted disk - graphical password prompt ?

Running Mint 20 (from upgrade) I've followed the guide here: https://cryptsetup-team.pages.debian.net/cryptsetup/encrypted-boot.html and got it all working. Bootup - one password prompt to unlock the disk, and the boot proceeds OK. However, I really have a problem with the fugly fugly text based pas...

Re: insmod cryptodisk missing from /boot/grub/grub.cfg

I can't state for certain what the issue was, but adding the line: GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="part_gpt part_msdos cryptodisk luks lvm" seemed to create the insmod entry in grub.cfg (plus some others). from there I was able to update-grub and then install-grub /dev/sda which worked fine (as per encryption...

Re: LM20 panel launcher oddity.

Hi, sudo find $HOME ! -user $USER reports files in your home folder that are not under your ownership. On a healthy system it should have no output. Incorrect ownership will cause numerous issues, including the symptoms you are experiencing. This command will recursively set everything in your home...

Re: LM20 panel launcher oddity.

So, final update (until reboot). After a bit of messing, I deleted ~/.cinnamon/configs/panel-launchers@cinnamon.org/2.json I then restarted Cinnamon. This time no error in the logs and I got the original panel launcher area back with Terminal shortcut and Firefox (which I'd lost from the upgrade too...

Re: LM20 panel launcher oddity.

Just a bit more info ...

had to reboot today. As I am getting used to, no icon.

HOWEVER, the file: ~/.cinnamon/panel-launchers/cinnamon-custom-launcher-1.desktop

is still there (dated 16th July, when I first added the icon).

So my guess is something in Cinnamon isn't loading that file ?

initrd.img (+.old) vmlinux (+.old) links broken, but system boots

As per title, really. The symlink files (dated 12th July 2020) are looking for /boot/initrd.img-4.15.0-109-generic (plus previous). However they are long gone since I upgraded my system to Mint20 last week (13th July 2020). So I am guessing that Mint20 (or it's version of GRUB) does away with those ...

Have I missed a step to make it persistent, or if I reboot and find it disappeared, is this a bug ? Re: Bug, fault or "as expected" ? "Examine low boot space"

Thought I'd update this thread ... maybe someone will find it useful. I found this excellent guide https://cryptsetup-team.pages.debian.net/cryptsetup/encrypted-boot.html Which hints at why I originally had /boot as a separate partition, and why it's no longer needed, as well as ways to move /boot a...
