Back from the Firefox update disaster

Well today I have received the second update for FF. As many will know, FF borked a lot of addons and totally broke them. I can't say that I was happy about this at all. The credibility of Mozilla has practically been trashed here, and I can't say that I like the way that there is never any changelo...

Terminal - Child process exited normally with status 2 ???

A bit puzzled here. I have a very simple script with 5 minute time loop. All it does is uses wget to check some websites, grab any new files and do this in a loop every 5 minutes. Yesterday I tried to run ths script, unchanged for many months and it would no longer work. The error message is per the...

Re: Google to charge Europe

Just a side note here, the UK will neither be part of the EU, or the EEA or EFTA after Brexit. In theory, this ruling won't apply ;-) As for all the talk about EU <> MS and now Google then I have this to say.. Since when has anything that the EU has done in the name of consumer / competition protect...

Re: What is the device name of my SSD?

I personally ID storage devices by going to the start menu, and use the DISKS utility.
I can then see that my uSB sticks, main hard disk etc etc are called /dev/sda1 or /dev/sdb1 etc.
Not sure if that helps.

Chromium really slow to load

Noticed this a while ago, but being a FF user it didn't overly worry me.
But just come to use it, latest updates, LM18.3 etc and I see once again that it takes about 3 minutes to load !
Seems ok after the first use, but why the heck does the initial usage take so long ?

Re: Linux Mint on GPD Pocket devices ?

Update.

Using the link above, plus others I can report that -

1 - Normal 32/64 bit images of Mint, and other distros won't work.
2 - "Respun" images that are doing the rounds to accommodate the device work fine.

I managed to find a LM 18.3 image which worked perfectly.

VERY happy.

I'm running LM18.3 on a GPD Pocket, which incorporates a touch screen.
It works perfect.

Conky selector GUI.

Yesterday I fired up Arco Linux from USB just for a test.
It had a nice Conky menu selector in it which made me wish there was one in Mint.
I didn't have a chance to investigate further so if anyone has further info then I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.
More info in that link than all the others put together ;-)
But also, has anyone loaded a "stock" LM ISO on to it without any respins and tweeks needed ?

Re: eeePC

I have one of those eee PC things here. I tried LM, but to be honest I found the eee PC a bit underpowered for the job. The 32 bit version of AntiX Linux worked the best (in my opinion). I had to try several options to get it to install properly, but no real problem, even for a novice. However, each ...

Website notifications and security ?

I see a fair number of website pop up a message about wanting to send the end user notifications. Is this a security tisk ? I kinda get the impression that it's a back door way of getting around incoming firewall restrictions. By allowing a website in, there could be all sorts of mischief caused if ...

Re: Wine App Not Seeing USB Device

I think your comport needs to be mapped out to make it visiible. I have a few specialist Windows apps that are not available for Linux and I use them with WINE. I needed to map it out like this In the terminal I use the command - ln -s /dev/ttyUSB0 ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1 (this command maps out a co...

Re: Wifi slow with Realtek

i think there was a Kernel update sometime in 2017 that sorted this out.

I had the same issues here, and before the kenel update I followed the advice here -

https://medium.com/@elmaxx/rtl8821ae-wi ... 1286524afa

and it work a treat for my LM 18.x system.

Cheap TV tuner sticks and VLC ?

Greetings all. I have a cheap tuner stick, listed as Bus 001 Device 008: ID 0bda:2838 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL2838 DVB-T I have confirmed that it works by using it on broadcast FM Band 2, and also used GQRX to listen to some locally generated 28Mhz transmissions on ssb. Took me all of 5 minut...

Re: Micro SD cards

I had a similar problem.

I had a nice new micro sd card, and used the supplied adapter for it in my laptop, it didn't want to know.

Put the micro sdcard in an old adapter and it worked fine.

It may be related, maybe not, but it might be useful info one day.

Re: Canonical Pursuing A Hardware/Software Survey For Ubuntu Installations

Just curious...

Can anyone recall or provide proof of a campany or organisation that collected data for improving the "customer experience", and the end user saw tangible results ?

I've never seen it.
