Re: What is Shim-signed, do I need it, and can I get rid of it ?

Not sure why I'd want an MS gatekeeper on my purely Linux PC's. You may not want it, but on an EFI using machine (and which recent machines do not make use of EFI?) you need the MS gatekeeper in order to start up your purely Linux based operating system. So what you are saying is that even though m...

What is Shim-signed, do I need it, and can I get rid of it ?

I just noticed in today's bunch of updates something called Shim-signed Microsoft Signed (I use LM 19.3). 1) I'm a fussy old man, and there's no change log. if someone doesn't tell me what has changed then I get a bit grumpy. Rationale - well if I was at work and someone asked me to sign off a docum...

Will it run without doing any tricks on a GPD Pocket 1 by any chance ?

Re: Anyone recommend a decent split screen terminal for telnet ?

Hi,

No it's not a problem of having multiple terminal, but have *a* terminal keeping transmitted text
separate from the incoming text.

Otherwise if incoming text arrives whilst I'm typing, it all turns to a confused mess.

Anyone recommend a decent split screen terminal for telnet ?

Greetings all. I've been using the console on my LM 19.3 to telnet to a chat server via the internet. But I am used to having split windows in the past, where the text that I type remains in one window, and the received text remains in another. I have searched for days for a suitable replacement, in...

Re: Having a script execute exactly in 10 min intervals, but not a cron job ?

Something like this? do_stuff() { # your commands here } while true; do do_stuff &>/dev/null & pid=$! sleep 600 if ! kill -0 $pid &>/dev/null; then kill -9 $pid &>/dev/null fi done And put the commands you want to run in the function do_stuff. Thanks. I'll give it a go, but I've just been given big...

Re: Having a script execute exactly in 10 min intervals, but not a cron job ?

I'm just reviewing the "watch" command now, that might do it.
I did try a sleep command version, but sometimes a command over runs in time, and then I get timing errors.
And then the errors accumulate, grrr.

Having a script execute exactly in 10 min intervals, but not a cron job ?

I guess this is probably in the BASH 101 manual somewhere, but I can't find it. I am attempting to make a simple BASH script that once executed will carry out a series of commands, and then restart exactly 10 minutes later. The crucial bit here is that it must re-start at exactly 10 minutes REGARDLE...

Re: So what is the ¬ character for ?

Now, on a similar note, I know what | is rather useful for in Linux but I fail to see what it might have been used for in Windows? Windows shell commands probably still use it. In the old DOS days the | pipe character simply meant pipe something to something else. I seem to recall using "type readm...

Re: So what is the ¬ character for ?

It was used, IIRC, as a part of HyperScript (and likely AppleScript, too) to take a line of code and break it into a second line. Yup, line continuation character in AppleScript: https://applescript.fandom.com/wiki/Line-Continuation_Symbol Looking back at my post, it has occurred to me that I have ...

Re: Whats everyone currently listening to?

I love the shambolic nature of the Roxy recordings, particularly the Buzzcocks set. Yeah, like most punk bands, they always sound like they are still practising ! All the Live at the Roxy stuff is just pure raw stuff, and once I'd heard the original Live at the Roxy London WC2 album I became a tota...

Anyone else here into similar? Cheers, DM. Yep, got all of those. The Li...

Re: Amateur Radio Fldigi on mint not running

I can't offer a solution (sorry).

But my LM 19.3 and repo FLDIGI does work ok for me (decodes RTTY etc without issues).

As for ham radio software , I wonder when the official repo will start offering a version of WSJT-X for this century ;-)

Thanks all.
I think I've worked out how to get rid of it.
Thankfully I don't think that any website I use actually uses it, so no loss anyway.

You might also be appreciative for the efforts they put into keeping Flash Player as secure as possible. Just sayin'.
Oh - I have applied the update.
But one day it would be nice to know how to avoid using it all together.
No attack vector = no problem ;)

Re: I don't get it - ANOTHER Adobe flash update ?

Well I'm struggling to know where the Adobe components are being used on my system. I assumed that reading FLASH or an Adobe format stuff was done by independent Linux source ? How would I find out ? Does FF or Chromium use it somewhere maybe. Lots of questions . It just seems to crazy that for year...

I don't get it - ANOTHER Adobe flash update ?

Barely a month goes by without another update for security bugs.

Why ?
