Re: Installation of Zoom app -- dependencies issue [Solved]

Hey karlchen, You are a genius. Not having refreshed the Synaptic screen was the whole problem! I did not know that I had to do this. Once I clicked the Reload button in Synaptic, I could use the graphical GDebi Package Installer to install the .deb file, and now: - Zoom is fully installed and works...

Re: Installation of Zoom app -- dependencies issue

Thank you, karlchen and ricardo. I have tried your suggestions. My problem seems to be that my system cannot access certain repositories. Please see error messages below (from Synaptic), obtined after executing the command pkexec synaptic: E: Unable to correct missing packages W: Failed to fetch htt...

Installation of Zoom app -- dependencies issue [Solved]

Hello -- Is it possible for me to safety install Zoom, the video conferencing application? I did not find this app in Synaptic Package Manager nor in Software Manager, but the Zoom website enabled me to download the package file "zoom_amd64.deb". I launched this .deb file with GDebi Package Installe...

Thanks again, ColdBootII. I didn't know about OpenCamera, but I will install it if I need HD files.

Re: My VLC does not play High-Definition MP4 video

Thank you for your suggestion, ColdBootII. But VLC 3.0.8 still did not play the HD file.
I'm giving up on this one. If I need to play an HD video file, I will use XPlayer instead of VLC.

Re: My VLC does not play High-Definition MP4 video

Thank you. Could you please provide instructions for gm10's suggestion: "Run it from a Terminal window and check the output". I don't have a high level of Linux literacy. I don't see what a "log viewer" is in VLC.

Re: My VLC does not play High-Definition MP4 video

Hello Hoser Rob, I saw your response just a few days ago. I am sorry that I did not see your response back in July. I think that something must have gone wrong with the Notification system. Anyway, I still have the problem, so here is the information that you requested (I installed MediaInfo), and m...

Re: How to display Grub menu during boot sequence [SOLVED]

Thank you, WharfRat and pbear. Your solution worked fine! Two minor issues did occur: 1. The command xed admin:///etc/default/grub worked just fine, but it caused Terminal to display the following disconcerting messages (which had no negative effects): ** (xed:1796): WARNING **: 18:42:35.590: The sp...

Just now I tried your suggestion -- holding down the Right Shift key during the boot sequence -- but it doesn't work.

How to display Grub menu during boot sequence [SOLVED]

Hello, I used to be able to display the Grub menu during the boot sequence by using the Esc key, but something seems to have changed, and my approach now fails. Maybe my timing is not right, or maybe holding the key or pressing it multiple times would work -- there are many possibilities, but I cann...

My VLC does not play High-Definition MP4 video

Hello, Does someone know how to get VLC media player to play MP4 video with High-Definition (HD - 1280x720)? My VLC successfully plays MP4 with Standard Definition (SD - 720x480), and my XPlayer successfully plays MP4 video with HD, but when I try to play HD video using VLC, I hear the sound but the...

Procedure for using TImeshift after a desktop crash [Solved]

Hi I have Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon. If I want to use Timeshift to restore my desktop after a desktop crash (where rebooting does not restore the desktop), are the following steps right? 1. Turn on the computer and interrupt the boot process by bringing up the Grub menu; press <c> to display the Grub...

Re: Disk Check for SSD [Solved]

I did some more checking and discovered that it is possible to perform a file system check and repair using either the GParted app or the Gnome Disks app from the booted Linux Mint installation thumb drive. In this case, the partitions to be checked, which reside on my computer's SSD, are all unmoun...

Disk Check for SSD [Solved]

Hi Two years ago I instructed my Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon system to run a disk check on my hard disk drive every 30 days by using the command (from the app e2fsprogs): sudo tune2fs -i 30d /dev/sda5 I periodically examined the results of the filesystem check in the file /var/log/boot.log . Now, however...

Re: Scheduling daily TRIM for SSD - Linux Mint 19.1 [Solved]

Excellent! Thank you so much! I was hesitant to follow the instructions on easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com, as I needed your affirmation that it was OK to do so. So I followed these instructions. This created the file /etc/systemd/system/fstrim.timer.d/override.conf containing the important lines....

Re: Scheduling daily TRIM for SSD - Linux Mint 19.1

OK, thanks. Do you think that the system might have a log file somewhere, where the "status report" of the TRIM operation is printed out? My Terminal screen does not show it, but perhaps the report is contained somewhere in a log? Clearly, the returned lines of your status command show that your sys...

Re: Scheduling daily TRIM for SSD - Linux Mint 19.1

Thank you, ajgringo619. My system does not give me permission to edit the file fstrim.timer ; please let me know how...

Scheduling daily TRIM for SSD - Linux Mint 19.1 [Solved]

Hi I have Linux Mint 19.1 (Cinnamon) with SSD, and my understanding is that TRIM should be configured to run automatically and daily. Can you help me make this configuration? I am still not clear about what steps to take, even after I have read two relevant Linux Forum posts: https://forums.linuxmin...
