Re: Partition allocation for a new computer

Thank you so much, catweazel ! Your reply was very helpful. I did not know about the issue of Overprovisioning / Unallocated disk space. I will do as you suggested regarding this issue. To follow up on an important point that you made: You mentioned a SWAP size of 2GB to 8GB. How do I know whether m...

Partition allocation for a new computer [SOLVED]

Hello I plan to purchase a new computer with: - SSD disk 512 GB - RAM 8 GB Regarding the partition size allocations: 1. Is 50 GB enough for a partition allocation for the Linux Mint 18.3 (Cinnamon) operation system, its apps, and its Home? 2. Is a SWAP partition of 8 GB the correct allocation size f...

System freeze after manual Suspend

Hello I just wanted to check with one of you about an issue that I think I have a handle on, but maybe not. When I awaken my system from Sleep mode (aka Suspend or Standby) that I have activated manually via Quit option > Suspend, a “striped curtains” screen appears (which looks a bit like an old TV...

CPU microcode option in Driver Manager [SOLVED]

Hello I see that this topic has been discussed in the Forum, but my situation might be an individual one, so I think that it might be best to bring it up as a new topic: Could you let me know which of the two options described below is advisable? My Driver Manager now displays the following choice o...

What caused my crash? [Solved]

Hello, My Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon system became inaccessible so I needed to re-install Linux Mint 18.1, which I am using now. I am posting now in order to describe the problem and to try to figure out what might have caused it so that I can avoid it in the future. Originally, about a year ago, I in...

Kernel management (Beginner level) [SOLVED]

Hello -- In recent days, Update Manager has suggested a few Level 4 kernel updates with a Security tag (exclamation point), and I have installed them. (I also used the Timeshift application to make a "Restore point" just in case). I have found no instability with the suggested kernel updates. So, in...

Re: Persistent Kernel Update appears after Mint Upgrade [SOLVED]

This time I found the Timeshift app in Synaptic. I installed it and made a snapshot of my system. Then, in Update Manager, I installed the Kernel update (4.4.0-104). After rebooting, everything appears as usual and my apps work OK. I even found that my Software Manager now works. I am closing this p...

Re: Persistent Kernel Update appears after Mint Upgrade

Thank you, Cosmo and gld59, for your responses. Every little bit of knowlege helps. Right now I am unable to acquire TimeShift because my Synaptic Package Manager does not show TimeShift, and my Software Manager has never worked -- it opens for a microsecond, if at all, and then closes immediately. ...

Re: Persistent Kernel Update appears after Mint Upgrade

Thanks, Cosmo. I don't currently have TimeShift, evidently (according to a website found by a search) because it requires Grub2 Bootloader, and I have the previous Grub. I also found that my Update Manager's View menu lists about 50 kernels, only one of which is active. I don't know whether the othe...

Re: Persistent Kernel Update appears after Mint Upgrade

Thank you, Cosmo. I have a dual-boot computer (Windows XP can be brought up, though I never use it anymore). During early boot, neither the Shift key nor the Esc key work, but, after the BIOS screen, a black screen appears with a list of options including "Advanced Linux..."; when I choose this opti...

Persistent Kernel Update appears after Mint Upgrade [SOLVED]

Hello, I have just now upgraded from Linux Mint 18.1 to 18.3. The process completed successfully. But the Update Manager is now persistently showing me a Level 4 update with an exclamation point under the Type field. Could someone let me know whether this update is critical versus not-worth-the-risk...

Re: Upgrading from Mint 18.1 to 18.3 [SOLVED]

OK.

I have a feeling that the untoward phenomenon occurred in relation to the fact that I did not update to Mint 18.2, but of course, we can't be sure.

Thank you again, and this post is closed and SOLVED.

Re: Upgrading from Mint 18.1 to 18.3

Thank you, Cosmo. I can now upgrade directly to Mint 18.3, and that's what I will do.

As a last thought: Can you think of any reason why the lone update for the Update Manager itself was not automatically displayed in my Update Manager until after we intervened?

Re: Upgrading from Mint 18.1 to 18.3

Hello Cosmo, I wanted to give you a followup. After I followed your instructions, I took the following steps: 1. In Update Manager, I clicked the Refresh button; Update Manager then displayed a single update (it was Level #1), something like "tell the system how to upgrade" (my phraseology). 2. I in...

Re: Upgrading from Mint 18.1 to 18.3

Thank you, Cosmo. As you suggested, in Terminal I typed 'apt update'. Terminal then returned about 53 lines beginning with: "Hit:1 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial InRelease" After the 53rd line, Terminal displayed the following text: Fetched 5,060 kB in 4s (1,103 kB/s) Reading package lists....
