Re: Linux Mint inside Windows with VMWare or VirtualBox

Thanks for the info! Do you happen to recall if the full screen mode in Virtual Box threw an error, or did it just crash the virtual session?

Re: No sound

Have you made any changes to Mint's configuration since the last time your sound was working?

I'd be interested in this as well. Are there any plans to make something like this available?

Re: Duplicate name exists on the network

It's possible -- this message typically refers to all 'nodes' on a network, not just desktops/laptops. So, if you have other networked devices that have the same name, you may get hit with this message.

Re: Failed to Boot and/or Install?

Do you get an error message of any kind, or does it just reboot on you?

Re: looking for a new laptop

I can't speak for all the different laptop makes out there, but I did have a Dell Inspiron laptop for awhile that had Ubuntu 64-bit running on it for a long time. It had 4GB of RAM and ran flawlessly.

I'm also running the 64-bit version. Do you recall what version of the driver you installed? Was it the '177' version, or an earlier one?

Re: Non bootable CD

The media could be bad, or just incompatible with your wife's computer. I've run into this a few times, where I burn a CD or DVD that works on most systems, but there's just one or two systems that won't take the media. To remedy this, I've had to use a different brand of recordable CD or DVD.

Re: Any tips for keeping a stable mint system?

Did you like to tinker with the distribution once you have it installed, or does the performance seem to degrade on its own? If it is the former, my suggestion would be to create a virtual machine with a second Mint installation that you can do whatever you want with, and if something goes wrong, yo...

Re: Problems burning DVDs

Brasero has given me quite a few headaches in the past. I've never had a problem with it not recongnizing a DVD, but I could never get a DVD burn to complete successfully with Brasero. Have you tried K3B? It works flawlessly for me in Mint. You can install it via mintInstall, or via a terminal by ty...

Re: what language should i learn

It really depends on your end goal. If you're wanting to get into something like Linux kernel development, then C would be the way to go. If you're wanting to do something more along the lines of game programming, C++ would be your best bet.

Re: connection via lan/ data transfer between machines

The easiest way to go about it would probably be to right-click on the folder in Mint that you want to be able to access from XP, and click on Properties. From there, go to the Share tab and click on the 'Share this folder' option. From XP, you should then be able to access the folder by typing the ...

Re: Windows-Based Programs

Hi, I've had trouble off and on with Wine as well. An alternative you might want to consider is VirtualBox (which you can install via mintInstall). This would allow you to install a Windows XP within your Linux Mint installation so that you could access any of your Windows-only apps any time you nee...
