Re: Gaming Pc Build... Windows or Linux?

Indeed English Invader, one puts much money to squeeze that extra frame and pixel out of a game only to be treated as a second-grade citizen. So neither Linux nor Windows...

Re: Gaming Pc Build... Windows or Linux?

Maybe so, but they are also way more cheaper to replace and better supported in every sense. And however "midranged", I still enjoyed Uncharted 4 sooner than you had a chance.

Re: Gaming Pc Build... Windows or Linux?

2 words- Video Card Fixed components make the consoles inept "high performance" gaming devices. An old $100 used pc with a $300 video card will out do a console. for the console minded folks. Linux with WINE or dual boot, is like being able to play xbox and ps4 games on a single console. ...

ROFL... do please tell us by how much has your rig outperformed my 300$ PS4 in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare? If you care to play the titles published after 2008, that is.

Yeah, assembling an expensive PC rig for gaming purposes is such a complete sodded waste of one's money these days.

Re: Gaming Pc Build... Windows or Linux?

If I were OP, interested only in gaming, I wouldn't pick either but would buy a console - cheaper, first to get new titles, no issues with video drivers, no hustle with poor ports and better optimized...

Re: LAN - Frequent disconnects (Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411)

This happened to me several times recently only not in Mint. In every single case the culprit was with the failing router port. It may also be in the 4.8 kernel you are using. With the same network chip on board and 4.4 kernel I have no issues. Switch back to kernel 4.4 and if the problem persists, ...

Re: Questions on scanning to PDFs, and Acrobat Pro/DC on Win/Mac

I don't understand. Nothing really, for a moment it slipped my attention that the PDF-s you were referring to are in fact scanned material, sorry. Also, I've used Catfish to find file names since XFCE's file manager doesn't search for files in sub directories and it is not a tool that searches file...

Re: Questions on scanning to PDFs, and Acrobat Pro/DC on Win/Mac

Since you need to find keywords present in PDF files, I think Catfish is not suitable or I don't know if there is a plugin enabling it to do it inside that type of files. Anyways, it also does not support indexing so even if it can do it, searching is probably very slow for that amount of files. Try...

Re: New people need to stop using 18.X and use 17.3.

Old thread but I would like to add a remark (or two)... People with "zero tolerance" are not fit to use anything, let alone Linux. The sooner they learn that world or anything in it, is not perfect or revolving around them, the better for them and everybody else. As for the race problem in...

Re: Two search features that I can't find

I recommend DocFetcher for searching within files i.e. question 1. It's portable, quick and not indexing everything like Windows does but only what you really need. There is a way to do it from command line also but find the way how when you feel like it as it is not quite simple.

Re: For those who have used/tried Cinnamon or Mate: why do you use Xfce?

Linux is all about choice and Mint as a Linux distro is no exception. That's why they offer 3 different desktop flavors. I'd rather pose a different question: why don't you try them all since you're not pinned down to Metro like when must use Windows? So far I've tried, which means at least for a ye...

Re: How to quickly switch sound output devices?

Someone made a script to do this. I don't remember where I found this to give proper credit. This script cycles through your sound devices: #!/bin/bash declare -i sinks_count=`pacmd list-sinks | grep -c index:[[:space:]][[:digit:]]` declare -i active_sink_index=`pacmd list-sinks | sed -n -e 's/\*[[...

Re: How can I clone a 500GB laptop HDD to a 240GB SSD?

Yet another possibility is to use Systemback. It has an option to create a live system, even burn it for you to a usb. It will not include files in your /home unless you check "include the user data files" and since it can't fit on your SSD, you shouldn't.

Re: kernel 4.8.0-xx

It appears that if the "Always show security updates" is checked in the preferences and "Always show kernel updates" is unchecked, it will stop showing the 4.8.x line and only show security updates for the LTS, when available. Edit: I could be wrong, but as the blind men once exp...

Cold boot, the newest is https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdate I did chat with a LM developer about this issue and they are going to look into it along with another issue with people that have installed the 4.8 kernel getting updates about 4.4 kernels. No time estimates of when it will be fixed T...

dpkg -l | grep hwe The same empty string here too. Jeremy, does this mean that I can put 4.8.x to ignore(blacklist) and still get notified about LTS? I would hope so.
