Re: Possible new user question about changing screen resolution

The simplest way to making xrandr settings permanent is by putting the commands into ~/.xprofile file (it doesn't exit until you create one and give it permission to execute). However, it comes with a trade off as it is a per user setting and you'll notice the resizing. Also, if I recall it correctl...

Re: Is Linux Mint the right choice for me?

You are, absolutely, correct. It wasnt intended to be. Not in any way. I know theres no "perfect OS". I also know that if I switch from Windows to Mint, Im just exchanging one set of problems for another. It was intended for people to tell me why it isnt "perfect for everyone", ...

Re: Awfully slow USB Drive transfer

An interesting article if you wish to tinker with Linux disk caching & performance cause it may affect file transfer speed to usb(but I think not much):

Re: Awfully slow USB Drive transfer

What you see is caching speed which is very fast particularly if you are copying from a SSD. In reality, even with a USB 3 device, you can't expect file transfers faster than 14MB/s and it totally depends on the quality of the USB stick.

Re: Ridiculous CPU load

Ditch Cinnamon and your problems will go away. I have to agree as most graphics and cpu load problems are attributed to the cinnamon desktop. Just out of curiosity what does this return ps -eo %cpu, command, cputime, nice,%mem --sort=-%cpu|head ps -eo %cpu, command, cputime, nice,%mem --sort=-%cpu|head %...

Re: Ridiculous CPU load

Eh, well, I just have had two such cases myself and I think the screen saver process is definitely one of the culprits. First time, this morning, I enabled it with the option to lock screen when it starts and when I unlocked it, it revved both cores to 100%. Now again, merely from looking at some of...

Re: Ridiculous CPU load

If I were you, I would consider upgrading to Mint 18.1 which sports the latest Cinnamon 3.2.7 DE cause it might improve the situation. Next, you didn't mention it, if you were already fiddling with Intel's thermald utilty to keep temperatures in check. If you didn't, no screwdrivers are necessary :m...

Re: Ridiculous CPU load

You have a high number of processes for any 2 programs running simultaneously. https://thumb.ibb.co/jnO6Lk/Screenshot_from_2017_04_23_09_28_21.png As you can see from the screenshot, while running Chrome on first desktop and a video in VLC on the second (not shown) my hardware is confronted with lit...

Re: Hibernation Puzzle

I'm afraid this will be one of those lame replies... Just set screensaver to activate after one minute and in Power Management to enter suspend mode after 5, and it is working as expected. Though, "Turn off the screen when inactive for" is set to "Never". As for Hibernate mode, I...

Re: Hibernation Puzzle

Hi, eyemdee

First off, it would help if you mention which desktop environment are you using(Cinnamon, Mate, Xfce)? One possible reason why you never see a screen saver running is if you've set the interval to the same amount of time for both - a long shot for sure, but weirder things happen. :D

Re: Need to get this off my chest..

Just checked, and according to this source, Linux desktop adoption must be seriously distressing for the fellows over at Apple's marketing(m$'s as well). I bet, when they see this, they must be prone to think that it's high time to "release the trolls" ( to paraphrase Mr. Burns of Th...

So, if it says "Wired" instead of "eth0" you're "lost" after 20 years of "experienced" use? You don't say it's the biggest weight on your chest, you poor thing... Ehehe, so many trolls strolling Linux forums in FEAR  these days, remark...

Re: nemo insanely slow when many files in directory

Besides, for strictly image browsing, image browsers might do better than Nemo. Just tried Pix (installed by default) and it looks very nice though as I have nowhere near that amount of pictures OP has, cannot tell how it performs in such a case. Edit : nope... just compared it to XnView (a deb pack...

Re: nemo insanely slow when many files in directory

IMO, if it's impossible to break down the file structure and organize them better within folders of this magnitude, it's best to keep them for reference only. Not browsed or searched by Nemo but left to some desktop-searching utility since they use indexed searches. Beagle, Recoll, Tracker, are all ...

Re: nemo slow when many files in directory

I find this difficult to believe... Now, I could check what you're talking about only in /var/lib/dpkg/info which contains roughly 12.000+ files on my machine and it took Nemo approximately 1.5sec to display that folder on a slow Kingston SSD and with a much slower CPU than yours. There's nothing &q...

The find now says:

Code: Select all

Odd, because my dconf folder is empty.

I also saw this error only once, providing root password fixed it.

Re: [Solved] Show desktop gone and what is the purpose of panel edit mode?

Update: I've copied the user-desktop.svg (saw this in applet's metadata) from the Mint-X-Red to Ultra-Flat-Numix theme folder to see what will happen, and it is all right now. The theme contains only a broken link for this icon so, it was definitely a theme-related issue.

Re: Missing/Corrupt Nemo Side Panel Icons

I think this may have occurred because you've installed an icon theme for GNOME which doesn't follow the naming convention adhered to in Mint and for that reason, it is replaced by default icon. Maybe you can locate the "Music" icon of that particular icon theme and then in Nemo change man...
