Re: Cell Phone Compatibility?

Samsung S7 Edge. Mint 19.0 Cinnamon. Just plug it in. Answer Allow on the phone to allow access to the phone. A file manager window will open. Done.

Re: I formatted my EFI partition system and am now stuck on the BIOS screen

If you can boot into Mint on the computer, get to a terminal and run this command:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
You will have to enter your password and it will not show. GRUB will update, then you should reboot. Let us know what happens.

Re: [Solved]: Install Cinnamon 19.1 over Win-10 from bootable USB

This confirms the kernel is 5.0 and not supported by the present version of Mint. So where/how did you get this kernel? I'm sure we can troubleshoot your problem, if you want to, but you do not seem to be very interested. I agree. Mint Cinnamon 19.1 ISO does not have kernel 5.0 by default so someth...

Re: Install Cinnamon 19.1 over Win-10 from bootable USB

I have been looking up, reading, and watching everything on this install for the last four days and I said I do not want to partition this HD and install it with Windows... You are actually very close to what you want to do. You must partition the drive because you have to remove the Windows partit...

Re: Why did you decide to install Linux Mint?

While I love the look of the Mac O/S, I really hate its lack of control that you as a user have over things. This is my iMac 9.1 with Mint 19.0 Cinnamon, Cairo-Dock using the Alu theme, and Mac4Lin theme. https://i.imgur.com/BY9aD9n.png The background is one of my photos. If you want the look and f...

Re: this can't be a new idea, right?

My recommendation is to get an external hard drive and just drag and drop your home folder to the backup drive. Let it run overnight. This is exactly what I do before reinstalling and also before I take my 'daily driver' on a trip. I have never needed that backup so far but the day may come when I ...

Re: The "Eat My Specs" thread - Post your specs

Your basic, generic, iMac 9.1 with Mint 19.0 Cinnamon installed. My daily driver and has worked like a champ. I turn on my main Windows 7 PC just a few times a year. The iMac isn't really upgradeable because to change anything you have to remove the screen! At least on the Macbook Pro you can just r...

Re: this can't be a new idea, right?

The Mint installer will just put a copy of the operating system on the root partition and leave the /home partition intact. This method works great, but you should still make a backup of your data, just in case. Moem , you are correct. I always advocate backups just in case something goes wrong (to...

Re: this can't be a new idea, right?

my suggestion is that a third option could be made at that point install fresh, but preserve user data Actually, if during your initial install you choose the Something Else option and partition your hard drive so you have root (/), /home, and swap partitions, then during any upgrade, just format t...

Re: Cinnamon development

Right click your desktop, hover over the Desktop menu choice, and then uncheck Auto Arrange from the submenu. Yes, you have to move your icons manually. If what you mean is to have auto arrange on and have a menu choice for right-align, that's not available now but it would be a good idea.

Re: Running mint from 1 Terabyte USB stick

I think the better approach is to leave a chunk of unallocated space at the end of the drive for future expansion, or put in an extra partition just for backup images. The point I'm making is for the OP; chopping up a drive takes planning and thought. The only reason to go above around 40GB is if t...

Re: Running mint from 1 Terabyte USB stick

Good grief. A fraction over one third of that should be more than enough. I disagree. You have the space, use it. Since the drive is 1TB, that leaves over 800GB for the /home partition. Why skimp? You're only going to have 4 partitions. This is not dual-booted. This is not going to be used for anyt...

Re: Running mint from 1 Terabyte USB stick

With 1 TB to burn, I would partition the USB drive like this: 500mb - Fat32 - EFI 100GB - EXT4 - / (that is, root) 800GB - EXT4 - /home 8GB - SWAP (assuming you have 8GB of RAM) Actually, your home partition should be the remainder of the drive less the swap space. That would be around 890GB for you...

Re: Windows 10 dual boot issues

Take a look at your second photo. Everything is fine there. When you reinstall Windows, SDA1, 2, 3, and 4 will be used. Do NOT let Windows take the entire drive! You will be installing Windows to SDA3. It should be called the C: drive in Windows. Make sure to format the C: drive so you wipe out ever...

Re: Wifi on Mac Mini 2008 LMDE2

Go into your network settings and disable IPv6. I cannot say this will work but on Mint 18.3 with an Atheros WiFi card, I had a similar problem to yours; it kept "connecting" and then asking for the password. I disabled IPv6 and it's been working fine. Right now, I'm on an iMac 9.1 running Mint 19.0...

Re: Neighbors Computer

I have had someone tell me they went back to a Big Box store's computer service department and were charged something like $80 (can't remember exactly how much) to "fix" their PC because it was running slow but they couldn't tell what was actually done to fix the problem. They booted to a Mint Live...

Re: Wifi not detected on Mint19.1

There is no wifi switch available on the device nor on the keyboard. Even in BIOS there is no option for enabling/disabling wifi. I think this is more to Drivers Yes. But it's always a good idea to check. My Dell E6400 has just such a switch and there are times I hit it accidentally and lose the Wi...

Re: Wifi not detected on Mint19.1

On all HP laptops, you should check to see if you have a switch on the laptop that enables and disables the wireless hardware. If you don't see one, try the F12 function key. Sometimes those things are off by default and you have to enable the WiFi manually. You can also boot to the BIOS and see if ...

Re: Why does Linux Mint work when others don't?

I think it's just the time and effort Clem and his team put into each release. I use an iMac 9.1 with Mint 19.0 Cinnamon and it's my daily driver. When I boot to any Cinnamon LiveUSB on this iMac, I just run Driver Manager, enable the Broadcom wireless drivers, and I'm connected. Even Ubuntu didn't ...
