Increase Number of Logs Kept /var/log/dpkg.log*
I recently installed LM20, and I am discovering that the only way to get a list of packages I installed is by parsing /var/log/dpkg.log*, unfortunately the log rotation stops with /var/log/dpkg.log.12.gz so anything installed prio to 12 months ago is lost. Is there a way to extend the number of logs...

Sound over Display Port/LM 20 on Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p Tiny
Does anyone know if Audio over Display Port works with the Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p Tiny Desktop? I am considering buying a used Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p Tiny Desktop to connect to my HDMI TV using a Display Port to HDMI converter. Just need to play media from my network and surf the web/watch Youtube...

Re: Linux Mint 19.2 & 19.3 freezes randomly and almost daily
Have you run memtest86? I was getting rabdin lockups on LM18.3 for a few months, then all of a sudden the machine wouldn't boot. (It wasn't often enough so I was too lazy to run memtest86) It turns out I had a bad CMOS battery, AND a bad ram card. Changing the CMOS Battery got me booting agin, memte...

[SOLVED] Kernel Selection After Updates
Thanks.... To aid anyone who might come across this thread, here's how this was resolved: When I booted LM20 directly from it's NVMe using the BIOS, LM20 used the latest Kernel. If I booted the hard drive with LM18.3's Grub, then LM20 used an old kernel. After booting LM18.3 I ran grub update as sug...

Re: Kernel Selection After Updates
Thanks for the replies.... I didn't know about the dual boot issue. Yes. Great detective work! I installed LM20 on an NVME, and it will eventually be my primary (and maybe only system). I am trying to migrate away from LM18.3, but it is taking me some time because I am having difficulty getting some...

Kernel Selection After Updates
I have a machine running LM 20.0, and I noticed that after the latest update I had the following kernels: 5.4.0-58 Installed 5.4.0-53 Installed 5.4.0-52 Installed 5.4.0-47 Active There appear to be 3 newer kernals installed. Are updates supposed to be automatic, or is there a resaon that I kernel se...

Re: Recommended Options for NFS Mount
'best options' is completely vague and has meaning only to you. In addition, because you have defined /etc/fstab as your solution, you have posed an XY problem . Actually, it's a rather severe XY problem because, for example, you state that one of your objectives is to 'Minimize the chance of data ...

Recommended Options for NFS Mount
I have very little experience with NFS shares, so I am looking for guidance as to the best options to use on my mount statement in /etc/fstab . I have 2 shares defined on a freenas box, a RO share and a RW share. I have been mounting the shares with "default" options just to get things wor...

How Do I Remotely Fix Grub
I set up Linux Mint 18.3 on my elderly father-in-law's lap top a couple of years ago. At the time I didn't know if Linux would work for him so I left the ability to boot into windows on grub. As far as I can remember, I left the grub menu hidden, but that was a long time ago so I don't remember. Som...

xdg-open not working
I am trying to use zoom from google chrome (hate GC, but it is the only browser that 100% works with zoom). The dialog box open xdg-open pops up, but even though I OK the action, nothing happens. I copied the link that is embedded in the page and ran xdg-open in a terminal to see what happened, and ...

How to Mount an Encrypted LVM drive?
I am trying to migrate from LM18.3 to 20, and it would make my life much easier if I could mount my old HD from the LM20 Install. When I originally installed LM18, I chose to Encrypt the drive with LVM and separate / from /home.
How can I decrypt the drive and mount an LVM drive?

Re: Install Question
Thanks @AndyMH... I did specify "Something Else", I selected /dev/sdb for grub installation, and I stated assigning /boot / /home /swap to the partitions on /dev/sdb[X] that I created, but I was afraid to pull the trigger because I wasn't sure that it might not change something on my main ...

[Solved] Install Question
It has been a long time since I ran an install, but when I installed LM 18, it didn't seem to be a problem to tell which disk it was installing on. I have a system with 4 hard drives, and I want to add a second boot drive (not partition) so that I can install Linux Mint 20 and dual boot until I am s...

Re: How do I Efficiently Migrate my Linux Mint Installation
Thanks @erginemr for the reply. Unfortunately I don't see that tool in my vrsion of Linux Mint 18.3. I did some more research, and dpkg --list appears to provide some useful info as does listing the directory of /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ - there is a number of .list files which I assume are my PPAs. ...

How do I Efficiently Migrate my Linux Mint Installation
I am planning to upgrade my linux machine Linux Mint 18.3 to Linux Mint 20.0. Several months back, I tried to upgrade to 19.3, but the upgrade failed, and that means I need to do a fresh install. Since my current system evolved over the last 2 1/2 years of use, I don't have a list of what I have ins...

Running Very Slow after Upgrade to Linux Mint 19.
I have been running Linux Mint 18.3 for almost 2 years without any significant problems, but I was hoping to be able to upgrade my installation quickly and easily so I didn't have to redo all my installations and customization. I downloaded the command line linux mint upgrade script and ran it (took...

Re: Safely Moving Timeshift
Thanks very much for the replies, I need just a bit more help to finish this; I have mounted the extra drive at /BACKUP, and the original Timeshift data is at /mnt/hd/timeshift. I executed the command: cp -av /mnt/hd/timeshift /BACKUP to copy the data. Have I used the correct options? I went into th...

Safely Moving Timeshift
Background: To keep /home as small as possible and for ease of maintenance, I put most of my user data on a separate volume /mnt/hd/user, and then symlink Documents, Downloads, Pictures, etc to a directory on /mnt/hd/user. I am currently using Timeshift and it puts it's data on /mnt/hd/timeshift. /m...
