Re: Mounting external drive as "local" in VM

... are you automounting the shared drive with an assigned drive letter and if not does doing so make any difference - https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/UserManual.html#sf_mount_manual No, I have not tried that. The documentation you point to makes it clear (to me) that every mounted drive will be ...

Re: Mounting external drive as "local" in VM

Are you backing user data on the Linux machine? Your windows tool at first glance sounds like Aptik https://github.com/teejee2008/aptik No, I was trying to use a specialty tool (Fab's Autobackup) that only runs on Windows in a Win 7 Guest running on a Mint host. Unfortunately, the tool does not wor...

Re: Mounting external drive as "local" in VM

Here's an even dumber question... If that's the app you're going to use...will it run under WINE? Just a thought Thanks for the suggestion. I've talked with the author and he's not sure if it will or won't work under Wine. But, I need to spend my time doing productive (billable) work as opposed to ...

Re: Mounting external drive as "local" in VM

While I do appreciate the advice, it is not pertinent to what I'm doing. I am using a specialized tool written to backup all user data for either transfer to another machine or a new hard drive. It's called Fab's Autobackup https://www.fpnet.fr/ . There is no Linux equivalent, and this tool does not...

Re: Mounting external drive as "local" in VM

I've done some searching on how to connect this drive as a local drive, but everything I've found so far carries warnings about possibly losing all your data! I can't afford that risk. If you can't afford the risk, don't do it. It's that simple. https://www.serverwatch.com/server-tutorials/using-a-...

Mounting external drive as "local" in VM

Aloha. I'm running a Windows 7 Home 64-bit guest on a Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon box. I'm using VirtualBox Version 6.0.12 r133076 (Qt5.9.5 as the vm software. Everything works. But I need to mount a drive that is attached to the Linux host via an eSATA docking station to the VM. I have been using the ...

[SOLVED] Can't delete volume group - filesystem in use

Aloha. My apologies if this is in the wrong section but it seemed to be the best fit for this question.... I have a USB drive that has Mint 19 installed. It was working fine and then I did something stupid (not exactly sure what) and now it is totally hosed. Rather than trying for hours and hours to...

Re: Sharing hard drive with Windows guest

You've done all the right things, I suspect a permissions issue - who is the owner of your NTFS drive/partitions? Another thought is partition size, is it greater than 2TB. Don't know if there are any VB/win7 limitations here. Why, if your primary OS is mint, have you got an NTFS format drive? Edit...

Sharing hard drive with Windows guest

Aloha. I'm running Mint 19.1 Cinnamon and have installed VirtualBox 6.0.4. I have a Windows 7 guest machine up and running in VirtualBox. I have an additional hard drive in my system (i.e. NOT the drive I boot Mint from) that I want to share with my Win7 guest. This drive is formatted as NTFS. I've ...

Re: Win 7 VM can't access USB drive

Are you using a USB3 device? If so, Windows 7 does not have native drivers for this. Here's a quote from one of the posters in your links: In windows 7 guest operating systems you need to install intel usb 3.0 drivers for win 7 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/21129/USB-3-0-Driver-Intel-US...

[Solved] Win 7 VM can't access USB drive

Aloha! I just installed VirtualBox 6.0.4 on a new Mint 19.1 system. I used the instructions located here: https://www.itzgeek.com/how-tos/linux/linux-mint-how-tos/install-virtualbox-4-3-on-linux-mint-17.html . The install went well and I am able to boot the Win7 VM. The Win7 system is fully updated....

Re: Trying to boot from USB, but boots from hard drive

the UUID of both the LM partition on the USB stick and the hard drive are the same. http://www.sudo-juice.com/how-to-change-the-uuid-of-a-linux-partition/ Don't forget to edit the fstab on the flash drive and update the UUID. Of course, the easiest way to do what you've spent all this time doing is...

Re: Trying to boot from USB, but boots from hard drive

harryz@LinuxBench ~ $ sudo mount –bind /dev /mnt/dev Use --bind , two dashes, or -B , single dash. The instructions are wrong. My apologies. I should have seen that. Did the procedure again using --bind and things seemed to work. But, after completing everything, the system still boots from the har...

Re: Trying to boot from USB, but boots from hard drive

I used Clonezilla ... what seems to boot up after I select Mint in the Grub menu is the Mint on the hard drive! That's to be fully expected. You've cloned the HDD to the USB drive so your USB behaves as if it's loading from the HDD because that's where GrUB points to. https://askubuntu.com/question...

[SOLVED] Trying to boot from USB, but boots from hard drive

Aloha everyone. I have a dual-boot machine: Mint 18.1 and Windows 7.1 (installed first). It took a while to get the programs I want and the network drive connections I need on the Mint system, but with some help from the good folks here, I got it done. Then I decided that I wanted that Mint system a...

Aloha. Is it possible to clone my exiting Mint 18.1 / Cinnamon system to a USB drive and boot that USB drive in another system? Re: Unable to write to network drive - permission denied

I checked the specs on my Synology DS416, and it said it supported SMB3. Unfortunately, it was configured to support SMB2 as the highest version. Changed this to V3 and the "vers=3.0" is now working. Speed has definitely improved. Loading an image to a 1 TB drive took 4.7 hours before. Now it takes ...
